Copy of a watercolour painting of the view of the Edinburgh skyline from the garden / lawn of Inverleith House, sketched and painted by Isaac Bayley 'Bay' Balfour, Regius Keeper Isaac Bayley Balfour's son in aroun 1912. The copy was made for Peronelle Windeyer, Isaac Bayley Balfour's great-granddaughter after the original had been cleaned and conserved. The original is in possession of her brother. The annotation on the back of the original has also been copied - it was made by Agnes Balfour, Bay's mother and says 'The view from the foot of the garden at Inverleith House- sketched and painted by Bay Balfour around 1912'. Paul Aellen was a visitor to the RBGE Herbarium in the Winter of 1964, one of the earliest to the new building opened in June of that year. He worked very diligently in a quiet way on the top floor, researching Turkish Chenopodiaceae. To the amazement of the herbarium staff, just before he returned home to Basle he handed over this delightful and amusing account of his observations on the microcosm of life in theherbarium with photographs, magazine cuttings and beautifully witty pencil and ink sketches.

Handwritten letter on 3 sides describing “new” method of propagation- “striking on the live plant”. By cutting 4/5 through the plant stalk and binding with damp moss a new shoot grows strongly and quickly. Anderson made successful experiments with fuchsia, heliotrope, jasmine, rose, etc. showing that this method can be used both in the greenhouse and in the open in situ. He grants Patrick Neill permission to publish them in the Transactions of the Caledonian Horticultural Society.

GB 235 ARM/1 - Lecture on 'Stimulation of Plant Growth' given at 3pm on the 5th March 1912 to the Royal Horticultural Society, Vincent Square, Westminster, this is a typescript from shorthand notes taken by Mr. C.E. Barnett of Grecian Chambers, Devereux Court, W.C. London. These are notes of a lecture on how plants are stimulated to grow, with practical demonstrations.
GB 235 ARM/2 - Lecture on 'Enzymes in Relation to Plant Growth' given on the 3rd June 1921 at King's College, Cambridge. Consists of two lectures on the same subject with demonstrations, slides and blackboard formulae, covering enzymes, their definitions and how they are believed to interact to promote plant growth.
