222 black and white photographs in 13 envelopes, some of which date between 1952-1957), presumably all taken by David Wilkie of RBGE and passed to (Charles) Trevor Jephcott. The subjects are all horticultural, with two notable groups, rhododendron and campanula.

The photographs cover a wide variety of activity at RBGE and many were used in the book 'How the Garden Grew' by L. Paterson. There are student groups, work in the Rock Garden c.1938-39, the Palm House, shots around the garden including snow clearing, staff/students prior to the Second World War including Henry W. Moseley, William G. Webster, James G. Crabbe, W.S. Neil, John E.G. Beach, Ronald J. Smith and also Jack Roberts. Trip to Loch Lomond (Guild?), Laboratory Shots and Jack Roberts dressed up as the Rag Queen on May Day 1948.

William Alfred Hughes's Silver RHS Medal 1929

The medal is a silver Royal Horticultural Societ Joseph Banks medal and is inscribed 1929 Junior Section General Examination in Horticulture William A Hughes First. In 1987 Hughes made contact with Roy Watling at RBGE and donated his medal - both men had been office bearers for the Botanical Society of Scotland. The medal, and eventually the certificate and all associated correspondence came to the care of M.V. Mathew in the library who placed them in the Archives.

Reprint was taken from the Transactions and Proceedings of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh, volume XXVII, part 2, is titled 'Mosses of West Lothian (V.C. 84)' by J.C. Adam and signed 'with the Author's Compliments'. It was read at the Society meeting held on the 8th February 1917, shortly after Adam joined the Machine Gun Corp.

    --7th September 1945, Roland Edgar Cooper to Miss C.F. Glen - thank you for sending sprays of heather - RBGE hoping to propagate and name them - shorthand writing on the reverse, and the envelope has been kept.
    --6th September 1948, Roland Edgar Cooper to Miss Glen acknowledging receipt of her 'very fine contribution ' of heather on the 31st August 1948.
