SUMMARY:
Account of a camp in the Jirgang Chu valley with early arrival of coolies, fair weather, and a march along and across the Jirgang Chu before a steep ascent on the right bank through dense wet forest to a cattle halting place. Marginal notes mention c. 4000 ft elevation, ferns and epiphytic shrubs, and Bauhinia vahlii 7969.
CONTENT:
the left bank of the Jirgang Chu, then up the Mangde Chu
R bank the whole way to KYILA - Tangsebi.
1st May. Camp in Jirgang Chu valley 6 miles. Got Coolies 7 am to
1.30 pm. BP. 201.6° Temp. 65° Time 3.30 pm. Ht.
Rained on and off a good deal of yesterday evening, but never
very hard. Fine at night, and fine today till 2.30 at any rate.
Coolies turned up in good time, but there was then a
terrific argument about the loads. Finally everyone was
satisfied and we were off by 7.0. The path is quite
good most of the way. It leads down to the L bank of
the Jirgang Chu about 1½ m above Marzi, then follows
the river up, keeping close the whole way to m 4½.
The river is crossed several times: it is easy to ford
now, but would be difficult or impossible in the rains.
Ascent is easy: the river probably falls about 200-250 ft a
mile. From m 4½ to camp ascent is steep, up the R
bank, leaving the valley bed, and ascending through the
forest. Camp quite good, being a halting place for
cattle on their way further up. There is a small side
valley 500 yards beyond camp, where there is ample food
