Biografie

Former Curator at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

He started his career at Threave and Inverewe and went on to become a horticultural lecturer.

c.1985-2015 (retired) he was Curator at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. After retirement became an honorary Research Associate there.

He has served as a trustee of Scotland’s Garden Scheme for 17 years, the last five as the chairman and has built a strong board of trustees to carry on the great charity fundraising that is delivered every year by the organisation and its army of volunteers and garden owners across the nation. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Trust for Scotland. He continually works behind the scenes encouraging many different areas of Scottish horticulture to work together and to achieve more for gardening and horticulture in Scotland.

He has given a lifetimes support to Scottish horticulture both professionally and through his involvement with the charitable sector including being a trustee for Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Hidden Gardens Glasgow and Gardening Scotland. He runs his own environmental education company and has advised many charitable organisations across Scotland.

[Excerpt from Introduction] This document was prepared by staff of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh following the request by Mr. & Mrs. W. Fyfe in January 1996, to assist with the research, planning and replanting of the Ascog Hall Fernery.

It is a record of the material selected to replant the fernery during the spring of 1997, in a style evocative of the original planting recorded int eh article from the Gardeners Chronicle of 1879. Following extensive research in the gardens library and consultation with science staff regarding changes in nomenclature, as many of the original plants as possible were obtained.
