Scope and content

'Compilation' of reprints relating to Excursions to the Highlands of Scotland, loosely bound together in a blue cover on which is written 'Balfour Highland Botany', likely in Hutton Balfour's handwriting. The reprints cover the dates 1867-1874 and comprise:

  • 'Notice of Botanical Excursions in the Highlands of Scotland during the Autumn of 1867 by Professor Balfour' from the Transactions of the Botanical Society, Vol. IX, 1867-68, pp.1-8. The paper begins with 'Professor Balfour remarked - It is useful to record every year the results of excursions, more especially when new localities have been examined. Several places of interest were visited by myself and pupils last autumn, and the results I will now lay before the meeting...' Paper covers locations such as Dalwhinnie, Dalnaspidal, Sow of Athole and Boar of Badenoch; Ben Aulder, Loch Ericht, Loch Laggan, Corryarder, Aberarder; Killiekrankie, Glen Tilt, Aberfeldy, Pitlochry, Dundee.
  • 'Notice of Botanical Excursions made in 1872 and 1873 (No.I) By Professor Balfour' pp.511-516; Breadalbane, Killin, Ben Lawyers, river Lochy. from Transactions of the Botanical Society, vol. XI, 1873.
  • 'Notice of Botanical Excursions made in 1872 and 1873 (No.II) By Professor Balfour' pp.520-522; Forfarshire; Clova, Glen Dole, Glen Fee, Loch Brandy; mention of rocks collected being sent to Professor Heddle of St. Andrews for determination. "I do think that if you could get a geologist who could perceive as well as see, and take him along with you in your grasshopper-spring over the country - for such is the character of a botanist's wanderings when compared with a stone-burdened mineralogist - you would produce a most interesting and novel volume." from Transactions of the Botanical Society, vol. XI, 1873. [n.b. Geikie accompanies the botanists to Glen Clova in 1874]
  • 'Notice of Botanical Excursions in 1873. By Professor Balfour' from Transactions of the Botanical Society, vol. XII, 1876, pp.54-60; Craigleith (fossil tree), Penicuik House, Roslin, Kinghorn, North Queensferry [references to blasting operations], Drem, Currie, Colinton, St Boswell's, Melrose, Clackmannan, Gullan, Newburgh, Arbroath, Auchmithie, Arran, Dumfries.
