System of arrangement

The Hutton Balfour correspondence is at present divided into at least two series - the bound correspondence (JHB/1/1) and the supplementary or loose correspondence (JHB/1/2).
The bound correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by sender (or sometimes by subject) and bound into 12 volumes. Each letter has already been numbered, with the run starting again each time a new letter of the alphabet is reached; giving us letter A1, A2, A3, etc, B1, B2, B3, and so on. It has therefore been decided to keep this numbering arrangement and the bound letters are being entered gradually onto the AtoM catalogue in a way that keeps this numbering.
The loose letters are also arranged alphabetically by sender, and it looks as if we will number them in a similar way to the bound letters, but with the prefix SUPP.
The two series will be kept separate, but a finding aid can and will be made available that will bring the two series together along with other pertinent correspondence.
At the moment, such a finding aid can be found in Lorna Morrow's PhD, in Appendix 7, p.505: (right click, open link in new tab) https://era.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/33248
