Account book (252 x 200 x 22mm) with pasted in or interleaved additions annotated in pen in John MacWatt’s hand, of various dates in the 1920s and 1930s but not in date order. Contents include newspaper and journal cuttings (many from Amateur Gardening, also Popular Gardening, The Garden, Country Life etc); reviews of The Primulas of Europe; an offprint of John MacWatt’s paper to the 1913 Primula Conference and illustrations from the papers of other speakers; letter from William Wright Smith, 8 January 1937, acknowledging the gift to RBGE of 42 lantern slides and 86 negatives of Primulas; Wright Smith’s obituary and other cuttings related to George Forrest; an invitation to a dinner to celebrate Amateur Gardening’s 50th anniversary; prints and postcards from a trip to Shetland in 1935; letter from Lady Haddington and newspaper cuttings regarding the opening of Morelands to the public for charity on 30 August 1932; and loose illustrations from The Primulas of Europe and other publications.

Account book (217 x 184 x 28mm), marked ‘PRIVATE LEDGER’ on spine, with additions pasted in and annotated, generally in ink, in John MacWatt’s hand. Contents, dated 1913 on, include handwritten copies or drafts of articles for The Garden, newspaper and journal cuttings (many from The Garden, also Gardener’s Chronicle, Popular Gardening, Amateur Gardening, etc), prints of Primulas, sometimes with annotations attributing the photograph to Amy Cameron; cuttings from The Times of India Illustrated Weekly (1923,1926) including photographs of Major-General R.C. MacWatt, (John MacWatt’s younger brother); cuttings from various publications regarding Chelsea 1927 and the associated Royal visit; and an official copy of a War Office letter 22 April 1918, confirming the appointment of Mr J. MacWatt as Medical Officer and temporary Captain in the Berwickshire Volunteer Regiment.

Sanderson's Prize essay manuscript, ‘The Origin and Development of the Embryo in Phanerogamous Plants’, submitted in July 1849 as part of his Botany course for his Medical degree at the University of Edinburgh. Sanderson has illustrated the manuscript with pencil illustrations drawn from the microscope.
Impressed by the content, Hutton Balfour deemed it worthy of a prize, with part of the content read at a meeting of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh in February 1850.
