Three boxes of Schoenus Ferrugineus research by Brian S. Brookes
Box 1 contains 2 photos of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, future King of Bhutan inspecting Schoenus ferrugineus with George Sherriff.
Collection seems to focus around a plantation of Schoenus ferrugineus that was growing on the banks of Loch Tummel that was lost by a hydro scheme in the 1940s/1950s? and Brookes's attempts to replant a new population at Loch Tummel in the 1970s.
36 pages of copied seed sowing records made at Ascreavie by David Smith.

My dear Hicks,
< I have your letter of the 24th about Bhutan photographs of 1949. As it happens[,] I am going to Scotland on Thursday next to stay with the Sherriffs [George Sherriff and Betty Sherriff] and will speak to him on this matter. I don’t think he has any coloured prints of the photographs we took, only the transparencies but if these are what you require I am sure he will loan them to you with pleasure. Since 1949, coloured photography has made enormous strides and correct exposures nowadays are almost foolproof. I am afraid some of our transparencies of 15 years ago suffer by comparison. Still they were not too bad. Would you want just your own coloured transparencies or those that Sherriff and I took as well? Drop me a line about this at the Sherriffs [George Sherriff and Betty Sherriff] address: “Ascreavie, KIRRIEMUIR, ANGUS”. I shall be there until July 13, when I go to Edinburgh to work on the genus Corydalis for a few days. I return here on or about July 21, but leave again in early August for a spell of fishing (sea trout) on the River Taw. I am afraid, therefore, I shall be unable to accept your kind invitation to spend a week end with you this summer. Perhaps next year, if all goes well (I shall then be so) I may do so. I had the misfortune to break my thigh in three places the winter before last, but I made a good recovery, I can now walk 4 or 5 miles a day with ease. I have a good surgeon (J.N. Aston by name) to thank for this.
My very best wishes and I trust you and the family are very fit and well.
Yours sincerely
F. Ludlow

My dear Hicks,
Yours of the 4 July, Sherriff [George Sherriff], I know, has written to you about the photographs. I enclose a list of the Black and White negatives and Colour transparencies which you took in East Bhutan. I have no slides in the Museum. If you will let me know what negatives or transparencies you want, I will send them on of course, the colour transparencies good as they were in 1949, are not up to present-day standards. That cannot be expected. I had a fortnight in Scotland and enjoyed my stay three immensely. I spent 3 days, in Edinburgh working in the Herbarium, which is now housed in a new and magnificent building which the Queen [Elizabeth II] opened a short time ago. Apart from occasional attacks of arthritis Sherriff [George Sherriff] seemed very fit. Betty [Betty Sherriff] too was in fine form, very busy as usual with a multitude of tasks.
Yours,
F. Ludlow
