Scope note(s)
a town in Sarpang District in Bhutan. It is located on the Indian border, about 30 km to the east of Sarpang, the Dzongkhag (District) headquarters, and has a population of 9,858 as per the 2017 census.
The former name, Hattisar, is NOT to be confused with the neighbouring Indian village with the same name, spelled Hatisar (known as Hatisar F.V)
It is one of the border markets and road entry points into Bhutan from India; Phuntsholing to its west and Samdrup Jongkhar to its east are two other border market road entry points into Bhutan.
Hattisar was a name likely adopted from a neighbouring Indian village with the same name and resonates to the understanding of the local Nepali-speaking residents at the time. Areas south of Gelephu was once ruled by Bhutan, Hattisar was likely a bigger village that included modern day Gelephu.
