A genus of small carnivorous plants in the family Lentibulariaceae. Butterworts are characterized by their sticky glandular leaves that capture and digest very small insects, such as fruit flies and gnats. Widely distributed, the plants can be found in wetlands and other moist habitats with nutrient-poor soil in subarctic and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere; they are also native to Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Like other carnivorous plants, butterworts are photosynthetic and manufacture their own food by using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water; the insect prey serve to supplement their intake of nutrients, particularly nitrogen, from the poor soils in which they live.
