Reginald Farrer, box of artifacts from his family, including his chop and medals

1 box containing Farrer's 'chop' - a wooden stamp used to write his name in Chinese[?], and his medals as follows: 1902; silver Flora medal, RHS, for Alpine Plants at Temple Show; 1903, silver Flora medal, RHS, for Alpines at Temple Show; 1904, silver gilt Flora medal, RHS, for a Rock Garden at Temple Show; 1904, silver gilt Banksian medal, RHS, for Alpines at Holland House Show; 1905, silver gilt Flora medal, RHS, for Alpines at Chelsea Show; 1905, silver Banksian medal, RHS, for Alpines at Temple Show; 1913, silver medal, Shropshire Horticultural Society, for Rock Garden. Also 2 cassette tapes, 1991, in poor condition. [They seem to be a recording of a talk about Farrer given by Joan Farrer.]

REC/3/3: Unpublished paper on Seed Morphology in the Genus Primula - text and 14 plates of photographs and illustrations. [Written in the 1930s?]
REC/3/4: Unpublished 10 page typescript entitled “The work of William McNab, landscape gardener, 1780-1848, The Royal Botanic Garden at Inverleith”; covers a history of the Inverleith site, Cooper’s opinion of McNab’s skill in laying out the Garden, a diagram of sightlines in the south west corner, and 9 of Cooper’s photographs taken in the Garden.
REC/3/5: “Received with Thanks” the unpublished autobiography of R.E. Cooper. Added to the collection in August 2020 after being donated to RBGE.

Cooper wrote extensively - the archive collection only includes a small sample of what were presumably the author's own copies. See Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Library catalogue for the rest of his output.

Small card guide produced by Charles Gane of Charles Gane & Co., Timber, Lath and Slate Merchants, Wisbeach, outlining how to calculate the cost of lengths of timber, published by William Rider and Son, at the Office of the Timber Trades Journal, 14 Bartholomew Close, London. There is an accompanying notebook, blank, but with columns for No., Length, Girth, Contents and Cost.

Inscription to 'My dear Bill, from RF', 07/02/1917. Photographs by Farrer. Starts in Peking in 1914 and progresses to Mei S'an, Gwang Hui Ssu, Mien Chi Hsien, Hwa S'an, Lin Tung, Satanee, Siku, 'Thundercrown', Jo-ni, then in 1915, Lanchow, Sining, Wei-Yuan, 'Wolvesden Pass', Tien Tang Ssu, Chebson Ssu, 'Creda Rossa' and 'Clear Lake'. Many shots of villages and mountain scenery, including the locations where various plants were found. There are also photographs from Farrer's lone journey south from Lanchow, before he was reunited with Purdom to travel down the Ja-ling-Jang, through the Yangtze Gorges to Ichang.

The Cooper Photograph Collection has been collated from a number of sources; some have been held in the RBGE Archives for some time, some have been donated and some purchased at auction.

Envelope of 13 photographs which have been historically filed in the archives with Cooper's correspondence, etc. including one of Cooper in 1913; Edgar Cooper and son Bill at Rangoon House, 1924-5; plants and scenery in Bhutan, including two plants collected by Cooper and growing at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in the 1930s.

These photographs were donated to the RBGE Archives in 2010 from a private collection. There are only three original photographs amongst them; the rest were digitised and returned to the owner and are represented in the collection by a cd and a set of modern prints.
