SUMMARY:
The team shifted to studying regional flora with Mr. Francis W. Pennell of the New York Botanical Garden, who spent two weeks collecting around the camp and on nearby high mountains. He identified many new species and regional records, provided distribution insights relating plants to fauna, and the team compiled a plant collection relevant to their work.

CONTENT:
The new phase of our work in the field
has been to study the flora of the
region in the same way that we have
been studying the fauna. We have been
able to do this in a very satisfactory
way as we have had with us during
the past two weeks Mr. Francis W. Pennell
of the New York Botanical Garden who
has been making a special study of the
flora of the Andes. He has been
collecting plants in the vicinity of
our camp and has also made two
trips to the high mountains near here.
He has found a large number of species
that are new to science and has also
found many that have not been recorded
from this part of the country. He has
also been able to give us much valuable
information in regard to the distribution
of the plants in this region and their
relation to the fauna. We have also
been able to make a collection of the
plants that are of interest to us in
connection with our work.

SUMMARY:

SUMMARY:
The page distinguishes P. sikkimensis from P. Hopeana by calyx features and notes that P. Hopeana here has a pinkish to red tube, possibly approaching P. Waltoni. It also mentions chasmophila and references P. umbratilis? with number 33014.

CONTENT:
Here P. sikkimensis No , is very much mixed up with
P. Hopeana. But they are distinct, as can be seen from the calyx.
P. Hopeana here shows a pinkish tube, sometimes quite red, which
I suppose goes nearer to P. Waltoni. But I have seen no P. Hopeana
here, where the corolla is red tinted.

SUMMARY:

thickly covered with bristles. It does not seem to answer to any of the descriptions in the book. We also saw the little white primula (minutissima) which we found the day we left Tama La on the way to Tahtsang. P. bellidifolia was plentiful till pretty low down this side, the small Primula androsace was beautiful. Otherwise not much. The Sanga Choling iris is here but not very numerous. We were expected here: the Chanut Dzongpen has been very kind, sent orders to do everything for us, also a present of 100 eggs & some flour. I have planned to go to Lung for 2 days, then to Karuha or the Kashong La. It should be reasonably dry this side of the La, but the locals say the rain the other side is awful, one can't see a yard for mist. That sounds pretty good for flowers I think. It is very pleasant here, & has been dry, but down the valley just beyond Nabampa I should think it is very wet indeed. Sent the Dzongpen a beautiful red scarf, & a letter of thanks. I wish the Sanga Choling people were as nice. A good many Lopas here, who have come over from the south, by the Lha La. They bring up rice to trade with salt.

SUMMARY:
A steep climb from above Gundusa through forest to the Byasu La is described, with open grassy slopes, fir, and rhododendron beyond the pass. Several alpine plants are noted, and Tenduk finds a red rhododendron in bloom; houses are present and yaks come up next month.

CONTENT:
It must be about 120° M. Path leaves directly above Gundusa, enters the forest. Thence it is a climb all the way, in places very steep indeed to the Byasu La, which is reached at m 3. The pass is approximately 100 ft above camp. We saw little on the way up, the only flower being a yellow rhododendron which is very like 3063 R. lanatum, except that the indumentum is pale grey coloured, No 3074. Immediately over the pass the country opens out and there are beautiful clear grassy slopes, with fir and rhododendron in between. On the open ground Primula flava is in masses No 3067. Prim. strumosa is common, but barely out in the little nala sides. There are signs of a Prim. involucrata too, but only in leaf so far. Two meconopsis are common. Mec. paniculata and Mec. sinuata? No 3068, which is just on the point of coming into flower. Tenduk found a red rhododendron in full bloom. It is very like Rhod. fulgens, but has no indumentum on the leaf, which is like a Thomsonii rhododendron, No 3075. This must be a lovely place in summer on a fine day. We have just had sufficient glimpse to see how nice it must be. There are some houses here, and the yaks come up next month and stay up.
