SUMMARY:
Notes problems with transport, dispatching Pintso and Tsongpen from Podzo Sumdo to Chinchas to begin a second Kongbo seed-collecting round, and leaving Migyitun for home. Short excursions around Bimbi La record collecting seeds of androsace, gentians, primulas, and widespread Cyananthus, including a halt at Bimbi La camp and work with Ludlow.

inducing them to turn up in time, or even at all. They have brought us up as far as our old camp, but will not go on any further. I hope they agree to stay the night & take us up in the morning. Pintso & Tsongpen left us at Podzo Sumdo & went on to Chinchas, where Pintso will send Tsongpen off on his second round of the Kongbo, to collect seed. I gave him 260 shao to see him through. I hope Pintso may also trace the mail, & send it up at once. We are now on our way home, having left Migyitun for the last time - without many regrets.

6th Sept. Fine, sunny most of the day. Went up toward Bimbi La, to the top of the rhododendron zone, to collect seeds of a lovely little androsace which was in flower here before, & got a good packet. It is not all ripe yet though. Found also a fine gentian - or Lomatogonium growing among masses of Cyananthus which covers the hillside. Only out for the morning.

Bimbi La camp

7th Sept. Halt. Fine. Went to Bimbi La with Ludlow. Saw Gentiana shetantha, & a fine blue one on the la which looks like G. ornata. Collected some seed of 1778, the nivalis primula found by Danang. The other, P. rotundifolia (orbicularis?) sp. was not ripe. The Cyananthus everywhere on the hillside looks a little different, so I collected

SUMMARY:
Collector notes eating wild fruits and finding mec. seed; Kashmiris sent to collect encountered bears. Halt at Bimbi La with androsace collected, then a rainy march to Chikchar amid disputes with local transport from Migyitun and a troublesome Chikchar headman, before moving on to Camp Totsoen in mist. Dawong assisted due to someone’s sickness, and Puntso managed to bring the Migyitun people up.

sickness, so it was left to Dawong to help me. I hope he recovers
quickly. The other evening I went up opposite camp to look at
the cliffs, and found some mec. seed, and a lot of raspberries and currants,
and we have been eating them ever since. I sent up all Kashmiris
to collect next day, and they came across two bears, which rather
spoilt the collection.

Bimbi La
14th Sept. Halt. Beautifully fine in the morning, after a good
deal of rain at night. Got a last lot of androsace. ? A. geraniifolia

To
15th Sept. Chikchar 10 m. A foul day. Heavy rain nearly all day after 9 am.
Puntso got the Migyitun people up with some difficulty, and after a long
wait and much argument we got off at 8.0 am. The Chikchar
people are still here, but go off in a couple of days, so we cannot
wait here at all. They are the worst lot we have come across, or
rather their headman is. He thinks he is of some importance, but
of course he is of none and has never travelled anywhere, so gives
more trouble than all the others. A few G. detonsa are ripe
here at camp. I have now been here four times, and have been
very lucky, as this is the only wet visit I have had.

To
16th September. Camp Totsoen. 5 miles. It just kept fine up till about
11.0, then misted all day. We did not move till 9.0 am, as the

At Bimbi La Camp, Tenduk brought in plants and a Tsongpen sent seed from Chuchar; subsequent halts record collecting seeds of Primula and Gentiana near a pass, with fine weather followed by rain. On the 9th, Lumsden, D and Tenduk accompanied the diarist toward Bimbi La and a talao, collected Androsace seed, and shot three partridges, while mail from Sanga Choling was delayed.

Bimbi La Camp
9th Sept. Halt. Lumsden, D, Tenduk & I went up towards the Bimbi
La, collected some androsace seed, then on to the talao, where
we found some partridges & shot three. Lumsden got one in flight
with No. 2 dust shot. Also saw a lot of G. ornata (?) &
higher up some fine specimens of G. stictantha & some seed
of P. glabra. Then we went on past a dying glacier, over the
ridge to the right & down an awful scree to where Lumsden
had shot kuling before. A lovely day: fine all day. Out
from 7.0 till 3.0pm.

Bimbi La Camp
10th Sept. Halt. Stayed in camp. Rain most of the day, though
P. sikkimensis pantlingii 2568
never very heavy. Still no sign of our mail, which the Sanga
Choling people must be delaying, damn them.

SUMMARY:
Notes describe S. and T. climbing toward Bimbi La via a good track through rhododendron forest to an alpine meadow and rocky, snowy ground. Plant collections at Bimbi La are listed for June 4 and June 5, including several Rhododendron, Primula, Iris, Anemone, and Vaccinium specimens with numbers.

CONTENT:
L. p. 108. S. & T. climbed to the Bimbi La - almost. The track, which was a good one, led to the junction of two valleys and on the level. Then proceeded to ascend quickly by means of easy zig-zags through rhododendron forest for 1000 feet. We then got to an alpine meadow and another 1000 feet brought us to rocks, boulders, and a little snow.

SUMMARY:
Notes discussions with H.H. on a new treaty affecting Bhutan, mention of Tasho Jigme’s freedom to travel, and soldiers sent up the Bumthang road to collect flowers including Prim. bracteosa, a Magnolia, and a Daphne. On 8th April they watched Bhutanese dancers and later hosted H.H. for a long session reminiscing about Calcutta and P.O.'s Gould, Williamson, Bailey, and Bell; letters from Kalimpong reported Ludlow’s departure and Norman’s sale of Glenulli.

almost 300." I hope something may be done, because certainly already many lakhs of rupees worth of damage has been done in the last 30 years or so. H.H. was undoubtedly interested, & doubly so as the new Treaty, although it promises 5 lakhs of cash annually to Bhutan, also says this may be stopped at any time if the Treaty is not kept. This sounds like a convenient loophole. We also talked about Tasho Jigme, & H.H. said that he could travel where he liked in Bhutan. I still hope to have further talks, as H.H. seems to like it. H.H. sent three soldiers up the Bumthang road to see what flowers they could get, & they brought back Prim. bracteosa, a Magnolia & a Daphne that were interesting.

8th April. Our time here has not all been lazy. H.H. has entertained us fully & we have entertained him too. We were down on 6th to watch Bhutanese dancers, male & female, & the next day we had H.H. up for a good long session, 1.0pm till 5.30. He was then in great form reminiscing, mostly about his Calcutta visit & various doings of P.O.'s Gould, Williamson, Bailey or Bell. Mostly he talks of Bailey, of whom he certainly has the highest opinion. He would very much like to see Bailey again, & thinks he may come here sometime yet. I know Bailey is anxious to come, & if he does, he will get a welcome. We have not bothered much about flowers, but took a few more yesterday from round about, including Albizzia Sherriffii (18657), which is a fine tree. Tobgye sent a few letters on from Kalimpong, which arrived yesterday. No special news, except that Ludlow got off alright, & that Norman had sold Glenulli.
