SUMMARY:
After heavy rain, the writer reached Damthang and rediscovered a striking blue Codonopsis near Hatö village, planning to mark plants for seed and corm collection. The next day they returned to Ha via Ha La, photographed Meconopsis habitat, and noted abundant Polygonum vacciniifolia. A remark notes that Tasho remains unmoved by commendable deeds in Bhutan.

deserves the thanks of everyone in Bhutan for what he has done. It leaves Tasho unmoved. He hardly thinks of such things at all.

16th August Damthang. We left this morning after a night of very heavy rain, at 9.30 were in Damthang at 1.30. The only interesting thing which happened on the way was the finding again of the very lovely Codonopsis which I got in 1937 under 3568. This we failed to find near Paro where originally taken, & was very worried about it. But here - just below Hatö village - we found many plants, & should have no real difficulty in getting seed & corms fit in October. I will in any case have them marked with stakes. The flower is most beautiful, a bright vivid blue, & bigger than Codonopsis vinciflora. This is shown up well by a wine red ring 1/2" diam in the centre of the flower, & a rusty brown large globular stigma. Otherwise it is just like C vinciflora. If we get this introduced, it should be a great attraction at home. The corms or tubers are like potatoes, & can be as much as 2" long.

17th August. Return to Ha via Ha La. The day started well, after heavy rain at night, & B & I got up to the Ha La by 9.30 in drizzling rain. But when we reached the place where Mec. superba grows, between the two passes, the sun came out & we had one hour quite bright again. During this I took some habitat photos of the Mec., which of course is now in unripe fruit. It was very pretty up there, as flowers are still numerous. The most beautiful is certainly Polygonum vacciniifolia sprawling over rocks & forming huge clumps of bright rich pink.

SUMMARY:
Field notes from Damthang and the Ha valley describe rainy conditions limiting bird observations, steep descents from the Ha La, and exploration towards the Kyu La. Numerous plants were collected or noted, and a Serow was observed at close range; ticks and lice are mentioned as prevalent in the jungle.

with small rhododendrons, some of which were in flower.
We saw no butterflies & few birds owing to the rain. There are
new kinds of birds here though & a good number of flowers.

Fritillaria (42)
Lloydia tibetica (43)
Collected a Fritillaria 3/4 m below the Kyu La, near the big
Meconopsis, which should be out in two weeks. It is white, &
probably imperialis: also found an Asphodel. Descent from
Meconopsis bhutanica sp. nov. (44)
the Ha La is very steep for a good two miles & then an
Pieris villosa 46
Euphorbia sikkimensis 47
easy descent into this valley which looks very fine -
Berberis virescens 48
Rh. wightii 49. rather more open than the Charithang valley. It should be a
good place to collect in. Rest House much the same as at
Charithang.

3rd June. Damthang Yesterday was fine most of the day, today only for a
short time in the morning & again in the evening. The jungle is
everywhere very thick & almost impossible to see birds in. Although
there must be new kinds here, we have hardly seen any. Today
we went 3 m up the Ha valley - which is wrongly marked on the
map - that to the North being the real Ha river.

4th June. Mostly fine till midday, then rain. Went up towards the
Kyu La got two new species & a butterfly or two. Saw a Serow (Himalayan goat-antelope)
twice, the last time at 40-50'. It stood absolutely still watching
B.S. cont. us & appeared to be quite happy & unafraid. It was in excellent
Ludlow spotting birds condition, with a good grey coat & fair horns. Found a few
from Damthang well filled ticks on me this morning & Ludlow got a louse. The
bungalow. jungle seems to be full of them, but no leeches anyway -
June 4. Pedicularis siphonantha (53) Pedicularis elephas (52) Spiraea bella (51)
Gypsophila cerastioides (54) Iris clarkei (56)

SUMMARY:
Halted at Dabla amid persistent rain and mist, with brief outings yielding birds including Spelaeornis sherriffi and Pnoepygas. A small mail arrived; the postmaster reports holding the Mago and Shingbe bags while other bags are with Babu Pradhan’s wives, and notes that Tobgye and Pradhan have been writing for news. The jungle conditions were very wet during a short collecting excursion.

a few days halt. Yesterday morning I had a good
collection of birds, including two of what seem to be
Spelaeornis s. sherriffi. They should be here too, as
this is about the same height & the vegetation is
similar. But they are not birds one sees much,
living in dense bamboo jungle.

16th Sept. Halted. Dabla. Rained & misted hard all day & all
night. Only went out in the evening & got a couple of
Pnoepygas. Yet another mail arrived - a very small
one naturally, with only newspapers & a note from the
postmaster. He says that he has now our Mago bag
& our Shingbe bag. The other two are still in
the possession of the wife, or wives, of Babu
Pradhan. The PM says that both Tobgye & Pradhan
have been writing to him for news of us. It is
amusing to think of Pradhan writing for news when
letters to him from us both are being held up
by his beastly wives. The PM of course could give
no news of us, as he also had had no
letters.

Dabla 17th Sept. Halted. The rain held off for a couple of
Streptopelia simplex 965 hours this morning & we went away down to
see what we could get. The jungle of course was
soaking. But we got 2 more Spelaeornis sherriffi &
