SUMMARY:
A letter from Syed Mohammed Kareemulla reassures the recipient about parcel safety and mailing via Rangiya. Diary entries describe travel from PHONGMI to RUNGZYUNG and PINTSOGONG, cold and windy weather at Tahtu, seed collection of an epiphytic Rhododendron, and problems with prematurely collected flowers leading to discarded delphiniums and limited Meconopsis seed.

as for me also. I am thanking myself to be fortunate that I have got the opportunity to work for such an Honourable man as you, which I never thought in my life.
P.S. You should not fear your parcel getting damp. I am arranging with Rangiya to send these parcels in the mail bag which is despatched regularly. With regards, yours obediently Syed Mohammed Kareemulla.

29th October. PHONGMI. 9 miles. 5460'. Weather still perfect, morning very cold indeed at Tahtu owing to wind. Sun still pretty hot down here, but wind makes it pleasantly cool all day. Took seeds of 905 — a rather extraordinary epiphytic Rhododendron (580) = Aeschynanthus maculata.

30th October. RUNGZYUNG. 8 miles. 4000'. Looked like rain in the morning, but cleared up. It is very much hotter down here. The man sent to Chukar (Cha La) to get the bagged flowers returned today. He brought most of them, but they had been taken off too soon instead of being left on till his arrival. The result was that the delphiniums were useless and were thrown away. Some of the other seed too was unripe, and he only brought one bag of Meconopsis 708. But still that is better than nothing.

31st Oct. PINTSOGONG. 13 miles. 5200'. We missed out the Dzong today and came straight through. Rather cloudy with rain not very far away. We were rather surprised to

Triju Dzong to Yangtso
Path is good the whole way and nowhere steep. Fit for pack with ease.
Path keeps along plain to South to m 4, where a small pass is crossed over a ridge. The southern end of the Triju lake is well seen from here. (Photo. from here.) Thence flat for 1 mile and path gradually leaves lake and climbs slantwise up hill to W to a pass at m 6 1/2. Down to a side stream at m 7 and up the valley beyond, gradually keeping left handed (South) over a very gradual ascent to another pass at m 8 1/2. Thence almost level to a "drokpa" (shepherds' tents) at 9 1/2. Path then gradually ascends to another pass (Yangtso la) at 11. Beyond this lies the Yangtso, about 3/4 m long and 1/2 wide, with shepherds' tents on S side and camp site at m 12.

Photocopy of letter sent by John Abercromby, Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland to Isaac Bayley Balfour, dated 21 June 1903; Asks if Balfour knows of any person or society wanting a collector of botanical specimens abroad. Recommends ‘a young fellow of the name of Forrest’ who looks ‘the right sort of man.’

1 folder with Photocopy of personal journal of E.H.M. Cox 31st January - 29th December 1919. Covering the Burma Expedition with Reginald John Farrer (17 February 1880 – 17 October 1920)
Remarkable account of 2 people, written between 1919 and 1920 and occasionally containing language and attitudes that would be considered offensive today; E.H.M. Cox, photographer, botanist, hunter, writer, and Reginald Farrer: botanist, painter and writer. Sail to Rangoon from Liverpool. Train and boat to Myitkyina and make base; from there they make expeditions into Kachin country with a large train of coolies, Gurkhas and Indian staff. Routine [as far as possible] seems to be gathering specimens, plants and seeds, taking photos, both glass plate and roll film, drying and pressing plants. Travelling from place to place and camping for as long as they need. Long treks in the north-east highlands climbing to 10,000 ft. and more. The diary is very closely observed and personal .The writer finds he has to do much more than the above accomplishments due to non-appearance of cooks, coolies etc. The weather plays an important part in the diary due to its erratic behaviour. Interesting that they receive pretty regular mail and both write a lot in return. British District Officers play a [generally] useful part in their plant searches. [description by SM]
