SUMMARY:
Account of a steep ascent from Nyug La camp to the Nyug La pass, crossing three nullahs, with dense bamboo in the final 500 ft and conifers on the 11,200 ft summit; the pass is compared to those crossed in Bhutan in 1933. Observations include Cyanoptila on the south side of Chanyul Chu above Trim and many erythaca at Nabrampa.

Nyug La

8th July. Decided at Nyug La camp
Took us 2 miles to reach streams for 3 miles distance. Ascent steep. There were 3 nullahs to cross where the going was bad. The last 500 ft. through dense bamboo jungle whence the pass gets its name. There were a few conifers on top of the pass. Summit is 11,200 ft. The Nyug La is one of several important lateral crests of a ridge, like the passes we were continually crossing in Bhutan in 1933 when we were traversing it from West to East.

Lots of erythaca at Nabrampa.

SUMMARY:
Notes cite Ludlow describing seeing no birds during a descent from Saka and remarking that wildlife is rarely seen when marching quickly. The page also notes that Trashiyangsi consists of six houses on a spur above the river.

Ludlow p. 135. On descent from Saka saw no
birds "It is always, or nearly always, the same
on the march. Unless you have the time to go
slowly & quietly through the jungle you see nothing"

Trashiyangsi consists of 6 houses on a spur
overlooking the river a couple hundred feet below.

SUMMARY:
Notes on abundant Primula geraniifolia and P. whitei in rhododendron and bamboo forest, distinguishing them from Boothii, and a route description from Cangke Gompa over Tigche La to Longkegang. Records include sighting and photographing a blood pheasant with chicks, a rainy halted day with mist, and only a few Rhod. glaucum seen while awaiting mail.

on the north side of the Lao La ½ m from the pass. But we
only saw Primula geraniifolia, which we saw in masses. It was
very common, always in thick rhododendron & bamboo forest,
liking small stream banks rather damp steep banks. There is
a lot of P. whitei, but none in ripe seed yet. Both P. whitei
& Boothii have now huge leaves, big fat scapes. But they
can easily be distinguished by the shape of leaves, & the fact
that Boothii never has the winter bud. // From Cangke Gompa
a path leads up the Ridge to the north, towards a big cliff,
which it passes, keeping to the Right, at m 3. At m 4 the
Tigche La is reached. From here the descent is steep at
first, gradually easing, to m 7 where Longkegang is reached. //
I came across blood pheasant with newly hatched chicks, &
spent a long time looking for chipped eggs, but saw none. Took
some photos of the male bird.
4th June. Halt. Rained in night, was misty all morning, with
some rain. Clouds low on hills. We did another big circle, to the
west today, but saw nothing of interest, except a few more
bushes of Rhod. glaucum. I have been expecting a mail for
several days now, but there is no sign of one coming.

SUMMARY:
Tsering and Yundra left with two coolies after HH arranged provisions and permits, with a plan to meet again at Ribang. On 11 Oct a halt day included visits from Tasho and HH, who brought presents and ice from the Thunlarharchung to keep a blood sample cool for transport to Kalimpong. On 12 Oct, during rainy weather, the party hosted Tasho, Kapo, Phup Gyeltsen, and Nyercheu Tropa and spent time firing .22 ammunition.

more at all, doubled up with rheumatoid arthritis, but who now has no pain. We have in between times packed up organized pretty well, are ready to move off at any time. Tsering and Yundra left on 9 morning with 2 coolies, and were all quite happy. HH made all arrangements for them - food then rations, a permit and all they could want for their little trip. We next see them on 17 at Ribang.

11th Oct. Halt. Tasho came at 9.0 am and left at 5.0. HH came at 1.0. So we have not had much of the day to ourselves. HH brought presents to us, and also brought a good deal of snow. This was for us to keep a blood sample of his cool on the way to Kalimpong. It leaves today, and will get to K'pong in 8 days! The ice came all the way from the Thunlarharchung, and the men who brought it were somewhat told off for taking 3 days on their way there and back. It is about 100 miles.

12th Oct Halt. Our last day here. Rain at night and in the morning. All day still clouded and rainy. Today we had Tasho, Kapo, Phup Gyeltsen, and Nyercheu Tropa to 'lunch' at 9.0 and they stayed till 3.0 pm. We filled in some of that time by firing off 150 rds of .22 ammo.
