Folder of notes comprising Ian Hedge's attempts to discover more about a set of Egyptian specimens in the RBGE Herbarium, mostly incorporating the name of Delile [or Delille, Delisle], but sometimes also, Vahl, Desfontaines, Lippi, Vaillantes or Zorsbial [Forskal?] 'Scattered throughout the Edinburgh herbarium are a number of specimens, probably a few score, which appear from the evidence of the labels, to be an early Egyptian collection. In common with some other of the older collections they are often mounted on sheets which have other specimens and labels on them.' The file includes letters written to other institutions by Ian Hedge with their responses between 1983 and 1986.
The collection also includes a set of correspondence between ,B.L. Burtt and Dr Hagerup, Copenhagen, dating to 1955 and relating to similar/connected collections made by Schumacher, Vahl and Forskal.

Four photographs, each around 6cm square, showing the Palm House, the Palm Houses from the North East Corner Propagation yard, and two glasshouses interiors including the Cactus House, taken by Thomas Bartlett in around 1955. Bartlett worked for a company called Burgess & Co. of Bracknell after his National Service. The company installed large industrial boilers and he worked on their installation at RBGE.

Notes written after Yu's time at RBGE ; Chinese botanist Te-Tsun Yu's [T.T. Yu's] career was significant and in recognition that our records of his time at RBGE are limited, RBGE horticulturist Edward Kemp contributed to our records by producing an account of his time spent with Yu alongside a summary of his career. To this is added an assessment of the Yu herbarium written by Jimmy Keenan in the 1960s(?)

On the front is 'J.D. Main' and 'Primula' in Dymo tape.
John D. Main was a student at RBGE before becoming Head of Horticulture.

1 small blue notebook containing field notes for plants collected by Mary Mendum on expedition to Irian Jaya in 1992. Irian Jaya is now known as Western New Guinea or West Papua.
4 Small collecting books – Sabah 1998 and 2000, Philippines and the Living Collections at RBGE. These contain original collecting notes including localities and descriptions which are potentially useful for future reference if anything is unclear on specimen labels.
2 small diaries – one of fieldtrip to Sulawesi in 2000 and one to the Philippines in 1998 or 1999– useful as reference for locations and logistics but also as Mary’s personal archive.

Pressed Plant Greetings Card, presumably sent at New Year, 1937-1938.
The pressed plant is a Maianthemum bifolium and was found in the Herbarium collection of Donald Patton alongside his Maianthemum bifolium specimen with the barcode E01360448 by digitiser Rebecca Camfield. The card was sent from 6 Glenan Gardens, Helensburgh and has the message 'Wishing you all much happiness in 1938'. Rebecca's research shows that the card is likely to have been created by Mrs Elizabeth Ewing and was sent by her to Donald Patton at the end of 1937 / start of 1938; an online search of the address on the card revealed a Watson Botanical Exchange Club member's list from 1926-1927 which provided a name of Mrs Ewing. Searching this name and the address Rebecca learnt that this was Mrs Elizabeth R. Ewing, married in 1901 to Peter Ewing. They had met as both part of the Glasgow and Andersonian Natural History and Microscopical Society, where she met several other prominent botanists. He became the President of said society in 1902, yet dies young in 1913. She became President herself between 1919 and 1920. Their herbarium went to Glasgow Herbarium after her death in 1951 at the age of 90.
In 1951 Donald Patton was the President of the Society according to their journal 'The Glasgow Naturalist' which he also edited. They were in the same circles and were probably friends. So this is highly likely like to be a little card she sent to Donald Patton in 1938 which he placed with his own collection of the species. It could also be as that was the year she resigned as the delegate for the British Association for the society?

Folder containing notes, correspondence and a draft of E. Charles Nelson's article entitled '"A botanical encampment at the foot of Ben Voirlich, June 22nd 1821" by Robert Kaye Greville, and a Scottish beetle' destined to be published in the Archives of Natural History, April 2011, vo. 38, No. 1 : pp. 96-103. There are scans of the engraving in the file, along with correspondence to and from E. Charles Nelson, Jennifer Woods (RBGE Herbarium) and John Mitchell of the Nature Conservancy Council. The article mentions William Jackson Hooker, John Scouler and David Douglas. Many of the notes appear to be by Jennifer Woods, which indicates that the folder was passed to the RBGE Archives by her c. 2019.

E.C. Nelson's Abstract: “A botanical encampment at the foot of Ben Voirlich June 22d. 1821” by Robert Kaye Greville, and a Scottish beetle

A lithograph and an “etching” depicting the same botanical excursion into the Scottish Highlands in June 1821 led by Professor William Jackson Hooker are reunited. The encampment depicted was on the west shore of Loch Lomond at the base of Ben Vorlich in Dunbartonshire. The participants probably included John Scouler and David Douglas, but a French entomologist, Charles Nodier, missed the excursion. A few weeks afterwards in the Highlands Nodier found some insects he did not recognize and named one, a beetle, after Hooker.
