SUMMARY:
Notes prolific flowering and collections including a new primula (P. jaffreyana 2257), an iris (2251), Incarvillea lutea (2252), and Thalictrum chelidonii. Reports shortage of drying paper, and mail issues: the runner found no mail at Tsona but had a chit from the Dzongpen; outgoing mail was forwarded by the Dzongpen and more is to be sent via Chayul.

...see how much more prolific the flowers were on this side. The most interesting things were a new primula P. jaffreyana 2257. Common to quite low down. A beautiful iris 2251, which I think is near the K.W.'s Karta iris, a queer lily-like affair 2252 (Incarvillea lutea), I don't know what it is.

Thalictrum chelidonii was in flower about halfway here, beautiful as ever. There were also a number of shrubs in flower too. Altogether yesterday I collected 20 different species. Now I have no paper left to put the dried flowers in. No mail turned up, but the runner is there. He found no mail in Tsona. We thought he was doing us down, but he had a chit from the Dzongpen which shows he was alright. Our last outgoing mail was still lying there, but both were sent on by the Dzongpen.

30th June. Halt. Sanga Choling. Another perfect day. Packed up mail to send off tomorrow via Chayul. Packed up as many dried flowers as possible, but have no paper; with this confounded tamasha going on, I cannot get hold of anyone. I now only have about 80 sheets of drying paper to play about with, which is...

SUMMARY:
Halt at Cheenchar with afternoon seed collecting of Meconopsis simplicifolia and Fritillaria cirrhosa after rain cleared. Heavy rain during the march to camp below Podzo Sumdo, with local rumors recounted and few new flowers noted aside from a large-leaved Thalictrum chelidonii.

which is in full flower about 15000', but last year's capsules are full of seed which is perfectly good as some was germinating in the capsule.

24th August. Halt. Cheenchar. Stayed in camp till the evening, when Ludlow & I went for a wander for a couple of hours, found seed of Meconopsis simplicifolia 16113 & of Fritillaria cirrhosa 16111 ripe & collected a good deal. Fine rain most of the day, but at 2.0 it suddenly cleared up & was beautiful till about 4.30 or 5.0 pm.

25th August. Camp below Podzo Sumdo. 9 m. 10500'. Rained very hard all last night, & practically all today. When the local head man came yesterday I heard some stories about myself. One was that when on the 'kingkor' I had a woman with me. She was shut up in a box during the day & only produced at night. At Sanga Choling we apparently had some extraordinary gift of making small babies. This was run down to my having blown up a balloon for a kid to play with. Few new flowers seen today. One is a beautiful Thalictrum chelidonii 2496, different to the one taken before, which seemed to be T. chelidonii. This one has very much bigger leaves, but the flower is the same and very pretty. It is common between Podzo Sumdo & Yarap, & down here less common. Another was a

31st July - Halt. Another good day, with very heavy rain indeed at night. Each day here has been good & each night very very wet. We were left alone today, except for a few odd things sent to us from someone.

1st August - Gyechar Again fine & sunny until after we reached here at 2.0pm, when there was some rain. We left at 8.0 & H.H. & Luden came out to meet us. Then on, past Lame Gompa where Tasho Penlo Wangdi gave us tea & 'ao-ed' to us from the window of the Dzong. It was very hot & sunny, but very pretty up to the pass, where the Thalictrum (chelidonii?) was really magnificent. Some of the plants were 10 feet high, bearing huge heads of flowers. We should get ample seed there. Ngudup came on here to give us food & see that all was in readiness for us. Betty stood the journey well, but two slips on the clay path near the end hurt her arm a good deal.

2nd August - Trongsa Dzong. From 5.10 am till 11.45, with halt on top of the pass, & the usual flower halts. A perfect day, blue sky & bright sun, of course very hot indeed down here, but there is a breeze. Nothing much to be seen on the way, of any interest, but we got some seeds - of 2 raspberries, & a few of Streptopus & Clintonia. We should get more on our way back. Betty much better today, not feeling her arm so much. H.H. has provided food again here for us all, servants included.

3rd August - Tashiling A clear night & hardly a cloud in the sky this morning. A good march, never too hot, as we were off by 5.15, through the huge Dzong, & down to the bridge over the

SUMMARY:
Entries describe leaving frost-bound Gortsum after a storm, incentivizing the team to dig a large haul of lily bulbs (430 total) with little Meconopsis bella seed found, and reaching camp early. The next day at Dhur was a short march with collection of Notholirion macrophyllum bulbs and Thalictrum chelidonii seed, seed-drying and packing, games with companions, and Yundon sent to Shasjetang to collect more seed before rejoining at Kuji (Bumthang).

CONTENT:
5th October. Gortsum. Another lovely day. We were all anxious to be off this morning. It thundered last evening and rained and sleeted heavily, but cleared up about midnight and was sparkling and very cold indeed. My tent was thick with frost which we eventually thawed off by making 3 large fires and bringing the tent to them. It is a long march and we were anxious to get as many bulbs of the new lily as possible. So I offered Rs 1/- per 25 to Pasang, Yundru, Tupden and the man with a pony. On the word 'go' Yundru was down to it at once, the others were slower. When we had to stop, the result was Yundru 157, Pasang 123, Tupden and the pony man 75 each. So we have 430 bulbs, as well as a good deal of seed. I could find very little Mec. bella seed, although it was quite profuse in the same place, when in flower. We got in at 2.0 having walked very fast today. It is very very warm here to us, after those high camps, but I must say is rather pleasant for a change.

6th Oct. Dhur. A lovely day and a very short march. In at 8.30 am. We collected only two things on the way - bulbs of Notholirion macrophyllum and seed of Thalictrum chelidonii. I had a good day drying seed and packing things away, while everyone else washed clothes and bodies for our arrival tomorrow. By 2.30 I had finished work, so joined Ngudup, Namgyal, and HH's syce who had come out to meet me in a game of stone throwing, like we used to have with the high lama officials in Lhasa. From 2.30 till it was too dark to see at 5.45 we played without a pause, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yundon went on today to Shasjetang to get seed of four other trees and shrubs, and will join us in Kuji (Bumthang) tomorrow.

SUMMARY:
The writer arranges for a Bhutanese married lama to collect seeds of Thalictrum chelidonii, planning to send a man from Sahden in October to obtain them. A Maharaja’s sepoy mistakenly traveled via Dirang Dzong–Poshing La–Tse La instead of the Luguthang route, causing delay; on 7 August at Dyuri (Mago) the party had fine weather, collected a few birds, wrote to Bumthang, prepared to return to Tsona, and encountered Abors who dropped their loads.

CONTENT:
It is only ignorance and conservatism. I am trying to make arrangements here for a married lama (!) — a Bhutanese — to collect seeds of the beautiful Thalictrum chelidonii for me. He will be bribed with butter and tankhas, and I will send a man in October from Sahden for the seeds from him. At first I thought of his taking them to Sahden, but being married, he will of course not put in an appearance that way again. The Maharaja's sepoy who came yesterday was told in Sahden not to go by the high road but the 'low'. By that was meant presumably not by Tsona but by Luguthang. But not knowing the country, the poor man went not by Luguthang, but by Dirang Dzong — Poshing La — Tse La. And so he took eleven days from Sahden instead of three!

7th August. Halt at Dyuri (Mago). Probably the finest day we have had since leaving Lahore. With the exception of a half hour's shower at 4.0 pm, no rain all day to 6.0 pm, and bright sun nearly the whole time. Collected a few birds, wrote letters to Bumthang and prepared for the return to Tsona tomorrow. This evening some Abors arrived, seeing our camp, dropped their loads. We have ordered them to appear.

SUMMARY:
Botanical notes along the Kulu Phu Chu include multiple Primula and Gentiana species with specimen numbers, with observations around 11,500'. Detailed route directions run from Kongshong to Kucha Leku and up to the Kucha La, noting valley bearings, river crossings, forest and swampy meadows (including Kulu hungma with yak herds), and a side path to Member Tso and the Tamnyen Chu; entries are dated 23 July and at Kucha La on July 24.

CONTENT:
540 Kulu Phu Chu. 23 July. Anaphalis corymbosa 5911. Aster himalaicus 5912. Pedicularis paludosa 5913. Valeriana hardwickii 5916. Thalictrum chelidonii 5919. Epilobium sikkimense sub. ludlowianum 5921.

  1. Primula jaffreyana. Not in flower. In a wetter zone than previously seen.
  2. Primula chungensis. Flowers almost all over.
  3. Primula chamaethauma. Very low, at 11,500'.

Line of valley of Kulu Phu Chu from Kucha La direct to mouth between Pana Thamdo is 290° approx.

Kongshong to Kucha Leku. Keep up the Right bank through forest from mile 1, where the path rounds the foot of a cliff. The river may be over the path here in summer. Thence level to 1 1/2, then a fairly steep ascent to mile 3, over a ridge. After this descent gradual, then level or nearly so, through forest the whole way to a small clearing at 5 1/2. Ascent then very gradual through forest to a large swampy meadow where yak herds live in summer at 6 1/2. This is called Kulu hungma. Line of valley approx 90°.

From Kulu hungma keep up the Right bank of the Kulu Phu Chu through Abies forest, alternating with open swampy meadows for three miles. Then the valley narrows and the forest is entered, the valley turning a little more Eastwards at mile 4. At mile 5 cross the river and start the ascent to the Kucha La. The ascent is beside the Left bank to mile 5 1/2, gradual, then very steep indeed to the La (BP. 188.6 52 730 26/7 Ht. 13,222' approx) at mile 6 1/2. The path goes directly up the ridge running parallel to the river, does not follow up the river, but,

A path leads up North from the bottom of the final ascent to the Kucha La, over the rocky ridge to the Tamnyen Chu. 1/2 mile over the ridge is a big lake called the Member Tso, and from this the Tamnyen Chu flows due North to Tamnyen.

Kucha La - July 24. Gentiana taylorii sp. nov. type 5929. Gentiana praeclara 5930. Gentiana leucantha 5934 sp. nov. type.
