SUMMARY:
From Ganju Tang, the writer records a long march over the Rudo La from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm, with rain and mist on the east side and dry conditions on the west. They note more rhododendrons on the east and report collecting about 21 alpine flowers, including several Primula species and Diapensia.

18th May Ganju Tang. A long march over the Rudo La taking from 5:00 am till 2:00 pm. I was lucky I had a mule which nobly carried me to the top of the pass with hardly a bit left out. We took from 5:00 till 10:00 to reach the pass, and it was through rain and mist all the way. Curiously, the mist disappeared on the west side. There had been no rain this side all day. It is obviously a much drier side, as the flora showed that. The East side is the one for Rhododendrons without a doubt. There are many more on that side. Primula elongata (18897) was not seen on the East. Primula hookeri not on the west. Altogether we got 21 flowers today, all nice. How pleasant to see alpines again after all the low muck I've seen for 2 weeks or more. Primula calderana (18890), elongata (18895), hookeri (18896) and smithiana (18900) were taken. Primula sikkimensis only in bud. We also got Diapensia (18891), but saw no Bry

SUMMARY:
The diarist observes several alpine plants in flower and feels unwell, possibly from bad meat sent by the Nyerchen Trepa. They have established a substantial camp, are coordinating with the local Sokpon who will provide yaks, and plan to ride to Waitang before moving camp. The site is at the junction of two rivers, one from Waitang and another from the west and the Chach.

...were just opening on 18th. Rhododendron setosum and anthopogon are just in flower, while Rhododendron campanulatum is really beautiful in full flower. Rhododendron cinnabarinum (velvet) is also very prolific, and Rhododendron campylocarpum common. Cassiope found also, and Pinguicula. Obviously we are nearer the real thing now; the only stupid thing is that I am not feeling too good. Ever since last night I have felt rather poor, partly heart and partly I think a cold or flu or poison from a tin of bad meat sent up by the Nyerchen Trepa. Anyway, here we must stay for a while, as we have such a hell of a place built for us. I am enclosed in a fir zareba, which is nice enough here where there is a strongish wind. The servants have a palatial wooden silver hut, big enough for dozens. The local Sokpon, in charge of all the Drogpas, is here, and a nice man. He will be the man we rely on from now on, and I gather that we will have 12 or 13 yaks always with us, and can move about as we like from now on. I will first ride up to Waitang to see what the place is like, then we will move camp. But we cannot move the servants' place. They must now learn to live in a tent for a change. This is at the junction of two equal rivers - that from Waitang and the other, shorter, from the west and also from the Chach

SUMMARY:
At Lung, the party halted for several days of fine weather while shooting birds and searching unsuccessfully for tragopan. The diarist notes rough valley paths, collects some rhododendron seeds, and remarks that other rhododendron seeds are not yet ripe.

20th October. Halt. The first fine day we have had since the 4th Oct.
Wind from the North, cloudy but bright. Went down the valley a
bit - wandered round the flat part below camp. Shot four birds -
saw two woodcock about a mile down. Tsongpen & the gyimpon will go
off early in the morning to look for tragopan.

21st October. Halt. Another beautiful day, fine all day. Tsongpen &
the gyimpon spent from 6 am till 2.30 pm looking in the jungle for
tragopan, but they saw none, not even any signs of them. So
I'm afraid we are unlikely to get any here now, though I have
two more days to do up on the hillside.

Lung
22nd October. Halt. Fine all day, with a very strong wind: clouded
over in the evening & looks like rain. Tsongpen & I went down a
good long way in the main valley - 5 hours. The path is
really pretty dreadful, hardly ever level for 10 yards, & as much
on notched logs & ordinary logs as on the ground. It is far the
worst I have seen anywhere this year. Shot a Heteroxenicus
stellatus, Sylviparus & Fulvetta ludlowi in beautiful plumage, saw
two or three nutcrackers. The cinnabarinum rhododendron is
not yet ripe, but I took some seeds to try. The big maddenii
R. crassum seed
2332 & 2338 were not ripe, but further down I came across one
