SUMMARY:
Notes from Tulung La pass describe harsh weather, sparse flowers on unstable shale, and a notable Meconopsis (bella, 708), with a sighting and attempted stalk of six bharal. At Longur there are acres of primulas, and on 23 July the party travels to Mago (Dyuri) in showery conditions, recording temperature, elevation, and abundant primulas along the route.

Tulung La 22nd July pass.
Anemone rupicola 704
Primula sikkimensis 705
Primula bellidifolia 707
Meconopsis bella 708
With rain, mist, and wind, it was chilly up there. On the North side we saw 6 burhel, which I stalked. But we had only a 12-bore with lethal bullets, and I missed at 70 yards four times. Flowers we thought would be profuse, but the hillside is almost continually on the move, shale gradually falling down to the river bed, and everything gets covered with it. The most interesting flower was a new Meconopsis (708) [Meconopsis bella (708)], a pretty little thing, which we thought at a distance to be Paraquilegia.

NB: Here at Longur there are again acres of primulas, white and yellow—a wonderful sight.

184 23rd July. To MAGO (DYURI) 9 3/4 miles. B.P. 191.7° Temp. 53° = Corr. ht. 11350'. Again rather a disappointing day. After a clear night, it rained till noon then cleared up till 2.0 pm.
Primula tibetica (Sikkim?)
We walked through masses of primulas for several miles today. One would think that there should be plenty of flowers in that case. So there

SUMMARY:
Notes list specimens 5887–5906 with habitat and identification comments on several Primula species and Meconopsis integrifolia. It records that Taylor obtained P. rotundifolia further east and includes additional taxa such as Cyananthus, Pedicularis, Geranium, Cotoneaster, and Saxifraga.

No. Taylor got rotundifolia further East.

5887 Primula Littledalei. This seems to have taken the place of 3892 (P. rotundifolia). It has much the same habitat, but does also grow out in the open on grassy ledges of the hillside. These taken from the lower altitude were in the mixed Abies rhododendron forest, which is quite unlike P. rotundifolia. They were growing just at the upper limit of P. Jaffreyana close to this. — at what I would suppose to be a very low altitude for a Rotundifolia primula.

  1. Primula hyacinthina. I don't know this form of P. bellidifolia. It has the thick farina on the back of the leaves like P. hyacinthina, but is a very small primula, much smaller than what I have seen of the latter. The usual height would be about 4"-5".

  2. Primula amabilis. I don't know this. The capsules look rather like a nivalid primula, but otherwise the plant does not. We were too late for any flowers.

5890 Primula rhodochroa. At first I thought of a dwarf kind of P. atrodentata, which it resembles in some ways. But flowers are nearly all single.

5891 Meconopsis integrifolia. Only seen growing in a very small area 50' x 50'. Flowers mostly over. There are many old scapes still standing in clumps, but the plant has old leaves at the base, just above the roots. The fresh flowers are a fine colour. Habitat is very similar to Mec. superba or Mec. Sherriffii.

SUMMARY:
Field notes from Sba Kulu Phu Cher listing Primula specimens with numbers and identification remarks, including flowering condition and comparisons among taxa. Mentions uncertainty between several Primula determinations and references a similar collection made in 1936 near the Kashong La. Additional entries include Saxifraga, Gentiana, and Saussurea taxa with specimen numbers.

  1. Primula dryadifolia. Collected because of the 2-flowered scapes which have the flowers clear of the leaves, which are very large. Is it a subspecies of P. dryadifolia?

  2. Primula sinopurpurea (nivalis sp.). Taken at first to be P. macrophylla. But several plants were seen with two whorls of flowers. Perhaps P. sinopurpurea?

  3. Primula bellidifolia. Flowers almost over. This differs from No. 5888, which has farina under the leaves; it is not P. hyacinthina.

  4. Primula kongboensis sp. No flowers seen. Perhaps Primula petrocharis?

  5. Primula muscoides v. roseotincta var. nov. The flowers were pale violet, the same as I collected in 1936 near the Kashong La under No. 2399. I have not seen the usual white form this year.

  6. Primula capitata subsp. crispata. Common, in full flower at its lower elevation.

SUMMARY:
Notes on Primula and Meconopsis around Nyuksan/Nyaksung La, with messengers from Tawang and plans to go to Mago on 10 July. On 8 July at Sakden, the writer went with Danuong and a Kazi’s servant to Nyaksung La on the Mera road to bag specified Primula and Meconopsis numbers and pot seedlings, noting a scarce primula beneath overhanging rocks.

Nyuksan La
Primula gambeliana (608), top, on the left under rhododendrons. A magnificent Meconopsis is also just below the basti, with Primula No 598 (P. waltonii). Its no. is 600 (Meconopsis grandis). There is also an interesting Primula (612) (P. strumosa), yellow, beneath the firs & rhododendrons short of the top. Danuong went up to a similar height on the Dirang Dzong road, & got very similar flowers. Messengers have come from Tawang, & all seems set for the next move to Mago, where we hope to go on the 10th July.

Nyaksung La
8th July SAKDEN. Went with Danuong again to NYAKSUNG LA, on the Mera road. Took one of the Kazi's servants, & put bags on the following: 598 Primula (P. waltonii) 6 Bags; 600 Meconopsis (Meconopsis grandis) 4 bags; 608 Primula (P. gambeliana) 5 bags; & 612 Primula (P. strumosa) 5 bags. This man is to return in the Bhutanese 8th month to collect the bags.

Megacodon stylophorus 633
Primula elongatoides 634
Primula bellidifolia 635

I have also potted the following seedlings: 598 (P. waltonii) - 4; 608 (P. gambeliana) - 4; 632 (P. strumosa) - 1; 635 (P. bellidifolia) - 1. The latter is an unknown Primula very like P. eburnea & growing in the same situation, under overhanging rocks. It was at the foot of the high cliff 500x short of the Nyaksung La on the Mera road, on the East side of the Pass & to the North of the road. The cliff is 200x away from the road. Only 5 specimens were seen, & all had last year's seed pods intact. These were collected. No more new flowers were seen. No 632 (P. strumosa) is a small

SUMMARY:
The page describes the route from Tsola Dzong along the Nyang Chu to the Pu Chu, then up the Pu Chu valley past DRUG CHORTEN Gompa and Mirando Gompa, with multiple bridge crossings and a suggested camp site. It notes a pilgrimage circuit toward Mira La, and records B.P. and temperature at Mirando Gompa on 12th August, with a further note at Mira La on 14 Aug. Plant specimens noted include Primula bellidifolia and Dic. leptorrhiz.

From Tsola Dzong path leads up R. bank of Nyang Chu to Pu chu at m 4. Several villages & extensive cultivation at mouth of a large side valley coming in from 270°. In summer the path in places is bad, over rocks, but in winter keeps low along the river bank.

From Pu chu a path leads up the Pu Chu valley, keeping to the R bank of the river, at first through cultivated fields then in scrub & fir forest. At m 4 a large monastery is passed, called DRUG CHORTEN Gompa. Thence through forest to m 7, where a large side valley is crossed by a bridge. At m 8½ the main Pu Chu is crossed by a bridge. A small clearing on L bank, suitable for camp here.

Leave camp & keep up the L bank at first. Path bad for loaded animals, never very steep, but rocky. The river is crossed four times by bridges & in summer is unfordable. At about m 7½ the Mirando Gompa is passed on the L bank. At m 8 the valley divides, the more southerly leading to [blank], while the western branch leads to the Mira La. This route is on a pilgrimage, walked round in a left hand circle by Pilgrims. B.P. of Mirando Gompa 188.2 Temp 50° 6.0pm. 12th August.

SUMMARY:
Field notes describe specimen 3394 of Primula umbratilis, comparing its scent, flower shape, hairiness, and colour to specimens 3384 and 3301, and noting its habitats on cliffs and open grassy slopes. The page also mentions an unnamed river referred to locally as "Mangde Chu Tributary."

  1. Primula umbratilis. This is, I think, the true P. umbratilis, and it would appear to be the same, or very near it, as No. 3384. They have in common, the identical scent, which is rather an unusual one. The flowers are both mainly the same shape: . This shape differs from No. 3301, which are: . Although this one 3394 was growing on cliffs, it was not on sheer rock faces, as was 3384. 3394 also was found below cliffs on open grassy hillslopes. The colour of 3301 had much more red in it. No 3394 reminds me of the colour of P. bellidifolia. The scape of 3301 is not nearly so hairy as 3394 or 3384. The latter two have on the whole, many more flowers per head than 3301.

x This river has no name. The locals merely call it "Mangde Chu Tributary".
