SUMMARY:
Notes report scarce seed at Trashiyang (many eaten by yaks), including a small amount from P. aff. verna, abundant Primula aff. odontica distinct from P. valentiana, and a limited yellow-flowered Primula possibly new, while some earlier numbers could not be refound. Local information states the Tsari Sama pilgrimage path continues from Sacha Pebo over the TULUNG LA.

At Trashiyang I found no seed of the fine collection of sikkimensis primulas of all colours. All had been eaten by yaks. Of 5541 (P. aff. verna), we got only 15 seed or so.

6595 = 5570 Primula aff. odontica. This is undoubtedly not P. valentiana, as seen here or anywhere else. But it does not seem to have the same teeth on the leaves as P. odontica type had. It is so profuse here, that I have a bigger collection of seed than I have ever made of any other flower.

  1. Primula Pet. sect. yellow flowers. We only could find a little of this, but the shape of the dead leaves makes me think it is new. This is the same primula, taken from the same spot as No 5573, & I should think is very likely the same as 3648, of which I have no pressed specimen taken lately. All there was of 3648 was taken with the roots to send home alive, but the leaves are similar, rather longer petioled in 3348, but the same cordate shape. We were unable to find any of 5579, & could see no trace of dead leaves, though it was common enough before.

Field notes from Chubumbu La record collections of Meconopsis simplicifolia, several rhododendrons, Lilium souliei, Cassiope selaginoides, and primulas, with mentions of 1937 seed collected. Bird observations from Lanyong, Sheltan La, and Cheanang note probable breeding pairs and a flycatcher at a nest.

  1. Mec. simplicifolia. There were many of these growing in dwarf juniper. On the whole these have not such a true blue colour. Nearly all, but not quite, have blue filaments. The flowers were very large. Hairs on the stalk appear to fall off, when the stalk is at full length. A few 1937 seed collected.

3942 Rhod. aff. repens (forrestii repens). Has usually 3 flowers often 4. A more lovely pink.

3951 Primula vernicosa var. violacea. This is very common. It is however mixed up with the white form. One never sees the two rooted together, though they may grow cheek by jowl.

  1. Primula valentiana. Very common indeed, just like P. odontica, it comes into full flower as P. tsariensis is over. A good collection of seed made from a slope which had been covered with snow till a week ago. All capsules are full of seed, so it must ripen very late.

BIRDS: No. 1. Blackbird. Lanyong.

  1. Phylloscopus tibetanus. Sheltan La. Lanyong. One of pair, probably breeding.
  2. Rubythroat. Cheanang, Lanyong.

  4. " " " } Obviously a pair. I think they were building a nest in dwarf juniper.

Notes record abundant Cyananthus lobatus below Chosam and, on Aug. 22, a gorgeous journey to Chickchar. The page mentions women leaving Chickchar for Yarob to avoid tempting monks, a monastery rebuilt at the expense of the Maharaja of Bhutan, and lists plant taxa with specimen numbers from Chickchar.

L 173-4 In a few weeks' time all the women of Chickchar
have to clear out of the village and go to Yarob lest they should
prove a temptation to the monks. The monastery was
burned down a few years ago, and I believe it was rebuilt at
the expense of the Maharaja of Bhutan.
