SUMMARY:
Notes scarce flowering near Yatung, a visit to the B.T.A.'s house, and photographing the chowkidar's wife; Worth has gone to Gyantse. On 16th May at Yatung they ride to Lingmathang, find few flowers (primulas and rhododendrons), collect three blood pheasants, and remark on well-built local houses.

here practically no flowers are out, except a few rhododendrons

Clematis alpina (LD 4)
We went over to see the B.T.A.'s house & garden - both very nice
looking places. Worth, the B.T.A. has gone up to Gyantse. I got
the chowkidar's wife to come & be photographed this afternoon. She
hasn't much in the way of fine clothing, but is typically Tibetan.
Chowkidar's name Tami.

16th May. YATUNG. Today we rode 6 miles up the valley to
Lingmathang, where we had intended to mark flowers for
autumn seed collection. But there were no flowers to mark.

Chumbi valley coloured, with a yellow eye. This was a good sunny
near Ling- day with a pleasant breeze. It seems the weather this
mathang side of the hills is better than the other. At Lingmathang
we climbed up the hill on the left bank to about 13,500'
looking for birds & flowers. Both were very scarce, but we came
Birds across three blood pheasants which we collected. The two
males varied considerably in colour on the forehead & tail
feathers, possibly due to age, or possibly because we are
halfway between two places where their colours are known
to vary. The houses here are very well built - chalet
style - with roofs of short lengths of pine wood. They are

SUMMARY:
A 5-mile march to Trimo is recorded with weather, elevation, and route notes along the river bank and a bridge to the village. Ahmad Sheikh develops a hard cough and fever; the writer administers aspirin and quinine despite Lumsden. Botanical collecting includes rhododendrons and primulas (specimens 1296–1299) near a side valley and marshy fields.

also huge flocks of snow pigeon, out of which we have shot over 30, which does not seem to make any difference.

Trimo 9th April. Trimo. 5 miles. B.P. 192.6° Temp. 45° Time 4:30 pm Approx ht. 10722' Path up the R. bank for 2 1/2 miles quite good, then over a bridge and a pretty steep ascent, easing off the last mile to the village - consisting of a few scattered houses, and some cultivation. It rained hard all night but cleared up and only drizzled during the day till 3:00 pm, when rain came on hard again. Ahmad Sheikh has developed the same cough and fever as L. and I have had. Ignoring Lumsden, I have given him 2 aspirin and quinine 3 times a day. The cough is awfully hard and painful. Took one new rhododendron on the

Rhod. wallichii 1296, fulgens 1297 way up, pinkish with rather a rounded leaf, and found a very nice one up here just in flower (1297). It also has a rounded leaf with heavy tomentum on the under surface.

P. atrodentata 1298, P. denticulata 1299 Here primula 1298 is growing in masses up the little side valley. ? Erythrocarpa is also in masses in open marshy fields. But so far I have found nothing more.

SUMMARY:
Notes include an Albizzia odoratissima tree near camp and confirmation that a primula matched Primula denticulata seen at Tauktoo Garden. On 23 March the party crosses the Myam Sang Chu by a bamboo bridge and climbs via Karteng and Sharteng to Gyipu with coolie changes; Pinto goes to Tawang with presents to the Dzongpen, and the day turns cloudy with rain from noon and low snow levels.

Albizzia odoratissima 1222 tree just before reaching here (1222). From now on transport must be changed at villages. Tomorrow we change twice on the way to Karteng. The primula seen yesterday was the same as at Tauktoo Garden - P. denticulata.

23rd March. GYIPU. 7 miles. B.P. 199.3. Temp 52° Ht. approx 7044'.
B.P. taken at 4.0 p.m. Rather a trying day. We got all loads off by about 7.0 a.m., by which time the head of the snake of coolies must have reached the Myam Sang Chu. The road leads down to the river easily, crosses by a bamboo bridge & ascends very steeply to Karteng, about 1500' up. There the coolies are changed. Thence down & across a side stream & up again steeply to Sharteng where they are again changed. Then up steeply at first, then more or less level round the shoulder to Gyipu. The changing was really done very well, only the last half dozen loads were left behind for which coolies had to be found. Pinto went off to Tawang with presents to the Dzongpen. It clouded over all day & rained from 12.0 on. Snow is now low down at 9 or 10,000 ft. The Pöla was open 10 days ago, but must now have
