SUMMARY:
Halt at Phobsikha with rain, camp preparations, purchase of a sheep, and plant collecting including Rhododendron lanatum and a Prunus tree; a rhododendron differing from Rhod. thomsonii is noted (No. 3066). The author went east with Puitso through Abies forest and along a ridge, and the next day marched about 3.5 miles to Chapepusa.

I went East with Puitso through Abies forest first then
up a narrow ridge with mostly rhododendron. All we found
Prunus rufa 3064 was R. lanatum, & a Prunus tree.

17th May. Halt. Phobsikha. Rained most of yesterday evening &
a good deal of the night. Fine this morning, but clouded over
very unsettled. Stayed in camp & got things ready for
tomorrow. Bought a sheep for 33 tankhas, did some developing,
& repacked all boxes, so as only to have to take one up
the hill with me. The rate offered here is only 8 tankhas, no
one ever having exchanged before: neither has anyone ever
sold a sheep, for which they at first wanted Rs 9/-. I
found a rhododendron today which appears to differ from Rhod.
thomsonii, although growing with the latter. The calyx is small &
R. thomsonii var candelabrum 3066 (Distinct)
the pedicels glandular (No 3066).

SUMMARY:
Field notes record plant specimens and a wet, muddy march from Chendebi over the Pele La and down the Longte Chu, with difficulties taking flower photographs and observations on loads carried by local porters. A report was sent from Trongsa on 8 July 1933 noted as slightly underexposed, and the next camp was at Tsang Ka.

5th July. CHENDEBI. 7500. 13 miles. (An. Ht. 7500' set) Another foul day with mist & heavy rain all day. Saw none of the country, birds were all lying clump. Flowers quite interesting. I find it almost impossible to get any colour photos of flowers. There is hardly a fine moment when we reach camp, or else it is only fine before my tail comes in. A hard day over awful mud paths; first a very steep ascent to the Pele La (11055') then steady down slippery paths along the Longte Chu to camp. The coolies are not particularly quick, but it seems to make little difference whether they go up hill or along the level. Tobgye tells me that normally, when carrying their own loads, women even carry 2 maunds (160 lbs), & then always carry the whole stage.

SUMMARY:
From Dyuri the party followed the Dungma Chu, crossed to the left bank, ascended steeply to the Chera La, then descended to follow the Gorjo Chu and camped at Chira Chum, collecting several plants en route. They continued to Lap in the Gorchu Lap Valley, halted there while Sherriff went over the Bo La, and noted disappointment with the upper Tawang Chu area.

Certainly a bit late, but this valley looks good. The other was too full of shale to be good. Path leaves Dyuri, following the Dungma Chu for 1½ miles, crossing it to the L. bank by a bridge. It then ascends very steeply through the jungle to the Chera La 3½ (about 13,411'). Descent on the south side very stony but not so steep. Then follow up the R. bank of the Gorjo Chu to camp at Chira Chum. Here there are two unoccupied huts, in a clearing. Grazing, water, fuel all good. Found a primula on the way down from the pass (Chera La), & another here. The latter is like the red one on the Nyuksang La or Orka La, but not so dark. It has a fine scent, & is a most beautiful flower. It rained all day from 9.0 am on, so again we had no idea what kind of country we were coming to. When the mist lifted, it looked promising ahead.
