SUMMARY:
The writer records local repercussions for aiding the Political Officer and objections to an interpreter at Tawang, then details marches from Haat to Jiri Chu, Demri Chu, Chungkar, and Satsalor. Also that those Tibetans who hired the P.O. ponies were punished for having done so when he had gone. The same happened to anyone who helped the P.O., so that locals are in rather a fix.
About the interpreter at Tawang, whom some of his own people had objected to. They did not like him, and thought his interpretation bad.

20th November. Haat. Fine. I wish I had gone on today, as I could easily have done so. A second bearer is more polite. Dzongpen wants to take photographs. He took 12 and developed them, but none were even recognisable. So I had to go with him and take another 12 today. But no more developing - these will go to Kalimpong.

21st November. To Jiri Chu. Fine. I was glad to get away from Purtogong. The Dzongpen was very kind indeed to us all there, but there was nothing to do but talk to him all day, which became very tiring. Coolies came direct, with no change. We have almost seen the last of the Main Range now: it was very clear today. From beyond Chunyhar one gets a last glimpse. Dundum flies not nearly so bad this year as in 1836. Collected again a few Lil. Wallichianum bulbs.

22nd November. To Demri Chu. Fine. If I had remembered how short a march this was, I would have arranged coolies to go on to Chunyhar. These two days are absurdly short, there is little of interest to be found on these lost dry hillsides. Got a few more bulbs of Lil. Wallichianum, now have about 40-50.

23rd November. To Chungkar. Fine, very clear sky. Another absurdly short march. Ludlow sent a note back here to say we leave Dewangiri on 27th. He also sent three bottles of beer and a small tin of chocolates, which was very thoughtful of him. Jill put up a lot of 'leku' today and also a dozen or more partridge. She uses her nose now very well indeed, has a lot of fun hunting on the hillside. There is a man here with his leg half cut off by a fall onto a rock. Ludlow was looking after him and tried to get him to consent to come to Kalimpong. But we showed no enthusiasm, although his leg will probably be useless in future unless he goes.

24th November. Satsalor. Fine. Taylor and Tenduk must have searched the P. Sherrifae cliffs pretty well, as I could hardly find a capsule. There is a man at Chungkar with a terrible gash in his knee, which is septic. Ludlow treated him for all the time he was there, and I dressed him twice. We both tried our best to get him to come to Kalimpong, but with no success. He merely said he could not go. He had the lamas in, they told him...

SUMMARY:
At Diwangiri, mail and bulb specimens (Nos. 573, 1041, 717, 553, 564) were sent to Ramsbottom, and 19 loads of kit were sent via the Pradhan to the station at Rangiya; the area teemed with birds, with 23 shot and Ramzana handling the skins. After halting at Diwangiri with cool, rainy weather, the party set out early for Rangiya following night rain.

12th Nov. Diwangiri - Some rain again last night. Very cool all day and 3 blankets last night. Sent off a mail today, and the bulbs to Ramsbottom. In one parcel sent bulbs of Nos 573, 1041, 717, 553, 564. Half our kit, 19 loads also sent down to Pradhan to forward to the station at Rangiya. Diwangiri is just teeming with birds. We shot 23 today and could have got many more had we wanted, but Ramzana can't be asked to skin more than 20 in a day. There must be any amount of animal life too, anything from goral and pig to tiger or panther and elephant. We came across none of these though.

14th Halted in Diwangiri: This was a pleasant place for our last halt, as we found new birds so plentiful. Diwangiri now is pleasantly cool all day and pretty chilly at night. We had local rain for an hour or two each day.

15th Nov. To Rangiya. A most successful day. We were woken up by fairly heavy rain at 2.30 and got up about 4.0 to pack up the last birds and our remaining kit. The servants were all anxious to be off as soon as possible, but we did not leave till 6.0 when the rain stopped. We walked down to

SUMMARY:
Expected malaria patients from Punakha did not appear, despite H.H.’s orders, leading to frustration and letters to H.H. and Tobsgye. On 20 Oct the party marched to Taluku, found the hut gone, noted a better camp at Nahila, and collected 47 bulbs of Lil. Wallichianum; on 21 Oct they reached Balimape, where the Zimpon was away in Ha.

CONTENT:
shrubs all the way down, but otherwise the place looks dry. We were to have had 40 malaria cases here waiting for us, from Punakha, whose blood Hicks was to make slides of to see what kind of malaria they all suffer from. H.H. ordered these men to be produced. But there was nothing here, all the Dzongpon said was "There is no fever in Punakha". If this is really so, which I very much doubt, then all our gift of 5000 Paludrine is being just thrown away now. I personally think there is a lot of fever, but that the Dzongpon is a fool who has not the energy to call in the sick people. I've written a stinker to H.H. & told Tobsgye all about it. We are both rather sick at this. It seems v. difficult to get anything done for these people. They say they want something done, but then won't do anything, when one tells them what to do.

20th Oct. Taluku. A lovely day, with clouds in the morning, but clearing to the real cold weather dryness. This is an absurdly short march which I only arranged as there was a nice hut here, which would save trouble for the locals in making arrangements. But we got here to find the hut gone. That doesn't really matter as we have tents, but a much better camp would have been at Nahila, 4 miles on. We got 47 very fine bulbs of Lil. Wallichianum on the hillside across the valley here. Some are bigger than I have ever seen, but none has had more than 2 flowers on it, whereas in Kalimpong gardens they can have up to 5 flowers.

21st Oct. Balimape. Again fine though mostly clouded. We got in by 2.0 but kit not till 4.0 - 5.0 pm. The Zimpon is away in Ha, so we are spared any trouble here in the way of conversation & entertainment. He is a pleasant man, but it makes things easier if he is not here.
