SUMMARY:
The party travels along the Yamdrok Tso via Pede toward Kamba Padze and on to Gorkar Dzong, enjoying mostly fine weather, abundant birdlife, and striking lake and mountain scenery. They change transport at Tamalung, collect seeds of several plants, and cross the Khamba La after a brief blizzard; Daud struggles with the rigors of the journey while Puitro secures animals for the pass.

CONTENT:
We put up in a house which was quite clean, and had a brazier in the room. All very comfortable, and really a most excellent day. Daud went off the deep end, and staggered everybody; he told us he couldn't manage on a show like this. I thought he was being badly treated by the others, but it seems he is just not used to this, and it is a bit too much for him.

17th March. Pede. 15 miles. To alt 14400' ap. Another perfect day: in fact I cannot remember a nicer one. The Yamdrok Tso was beautiful—a wonderful blue-green colour. The sky a perfect blue—as one only gets in Tibet. The path follows close to the lake the whole way, and I walked along the edge nearly all the way. We saw thousands of duck, geese, teal & some gulls—the greater black-headed gull, Larus ichthyaetus, & L. brunnicephalus, the brown-headed gull. Also a few black-necked cranes. I took a whole film of Kodachrome for Pan, mostly of birds, and hope they will turn out well. In the evening it clouded over, but that did not matter. A grand day altogether. Stopped in a poor house in Pede. This road, from Nangartse on, is new to us.

18th March. Kamba Padze. 18 miles. To alt 12000' ap. Clouded in the morning. Shortly after starting we had a blizzard, but it only lasted half an hour, then the sun came out again. The path lies along the lake side again till 12. The Yamdrok Tso was frozen right over for several miles, then clear again. As soon as the sun appeared, we could hear the ice cracking, and that went on till the clouds obscured the sun. There is more sign of vegetation on the hills here, & we saw a great deal of Gentiana waltonii, a good deal of Incarvillea lutea (?) & a very little of a primula which from the dead leaves looks like P. jaffreyana. Some seed of all were collected. At 12 the path leaves the lake & climbs a little to a village, Tamalung, where transport is changed. Here they wanted us to stay the night, but we were determined to get over the pass to warmer climes. After a two hour wait Puitro managed to get 20 animals to cross. The rest are to follow tomorrow. The climb to the Khamba La is easy & the Pass is reached at 13 1/2. From the top the Tsangpo can be seen, the descent is very steep & direct into the side valley in which Kampa Padze is situated. We again spent the night in a house, with no ill effects.

19th March. Gorkar Dzong. 11 miles. To Kongka Dzong. A perfect day, no clouds or wind. The Tsangpo is a

• SUMMARY:
  Notes a small patch of Primula tenuiloba on steep rocky cliffs, followed by observations of a Lerwa nest with five eggs and an Anthus nest with three eggs. At Mipa, records abundant primulas on hillsides, with Tenduk bringing specimens from Lhapu and a blue primula (2173) and another from Natrampa, and lists several Primula specimens (2137, 2173–2178).

P. tenuiloba 2172 in a small patch, where the cliffs are very steep & loose sharp rocks abound. It is a very pretty little thing. Huge flowers for its small leaves. Nothing more was seen till Mipa, in the flower line, but I walked on to a Lerwa's nest. It was under a very small Lonicera bush, shaded from rain, & only open from the downhill side, made of dried grass, & with a few feathers inside. Five eggs which took me 1 1/2 hours to blow, all with fledged chicks in them. A little further on I came across an Anthus nest with three eggs, perhaps A. hodgsoni? I did not take the eggs.

Mipa
Mipa is on a plain, with waterfalls coming down on all sides & a large heap of avalanche snow beside my camp below the hut. The hillsides above camp are liberally covered with primulas, in many places there is just moss with a primula shooting up every inch. P. Roylei (Calderiana), macrophylla, the blue purple one rather like Roylei & the bright claret are most common. Tenduk came in with the minute one found at Lhapu (2137) & the beautiful blue one which is just coming out everywhere 2173, & also the one Danu found at Natrampa. SUMMARY:
Notes prolific flowering and collections including a new primula (P. jaffreyana 2257), an iris (2251), Incarvillea lutea (2252), and Thalictrum chelidonii. Reports shortage of drying paper, and mail issues: the runner found no mail at Tsona but had a chit from the Dzongpen; outgoing mail was forwarded by the Dzongpen and more is to be sent via Chayul.

...see how much more prolific the flowers were on this side. The most interesting things were a new primula P. jaffreyana 2257. Common to quite low down. A beautiful iris 2251, which I think is near the K.W.'s Karta iris, a queer lily-like affair 2252 (Incarvillea lutea), I don't know what it is.

Thalictrum chelidonii was in flower about halfway here, beautiful as ever. There were also a number of shrubs in flower too. Altogether yesterday I collected 20 different species. Now I have no paper left to put the dried flowers in. No mail turned up, but the runner is there. He found no mail in Tsona. We thought he was doing us down, but he had a chit from the Dzongpen which shows he was alright. Our last outgoing mail was still lying there, but both were sent on by the Dzongpen.

30th June. Halt. Sanga Choling. Another perfect day. Packed up mail to send off tomorrow via Chayul. Packed up as many dried flowers as possible, but have no paper; with this confounded tamasha going on, I cannot get hold of anyone. I now only have about 80 sheets of drying paper to play about with, which is...

SUMMARY:
Field observations around Kyimpu noting numerous flowering plants and seed collections, including Roscoea alpina, Deutzia hookeriana, Stellera chamaejasme, and Meconopsis bella. A supposed crane’s eggs find proved to be partridge; later, the party halted with rain, bought a sheep, and walked toward the Le La. The locals are described as friendly.

...a crane's eggs, but when he brought them, they turned out only to be those of a partridge, a great disappointment. There were four in the nest, of which he broke one.

A good many flowers on the way up, lots of the Primula jeffreyana 2257, of walshii 2256 just below Kyimpu 2258. Also of the Incarvillea lutea 2252 of which I took some of last year's seeds, which appear to be good. P. atrodentata is in seed too, of which I took a lot of that. Mec. bella 2283 is in flower here, others up here. There is a nice little Deutzia hookeriana 2279 in the rocky gorge between the two bridges, which is both fragrant and pretty. And the Stellera 2277 is a nice little thing, looking prettiest when it is half out—red in the centre of the buds, contrasting with white of the open corolla all around. I think we should do well up here. The locals are all a friendly lot for anything as far as I can see.

4th July. Halt. More or less fine till 1130, then heavy rain most of the day. Bought a sheep for Rs 3/-. We all went up towards the Le La, turning off right before reaching it. P. hyacinthina 2294 is very common.

SUMMARY:
The diarist describes difficult stream crossings with washed-out bridges, a woman helping her brother, and a day in camp changing flowers and bathing. On 12 July they travel about 8 miles to Karutra via Drotang, encounter rain after 10 a.m., note relatively scarce rainfall in the valley, and await possible mail from Tsona via the dak runner.

streams considerably, and some of them were not too easy to cross.
All bridges had been partly washed away, and in each case there was
only one thin tree trunk left to walk on. I was amused to see
one woman cross with her load, take it off and come back to
take a man's load. The man was obviously her brother, and
was a bit 'pagal' so they say. Stayed in camp today,
changing flowers etc., and had a 'bath'. Ludlow and Lumsden
have the only tub, so I wait for a warm place, have a
basin in my tent and make a thorough mess of the whole
place sponging myself down. The dak runner was supposed
to be back in 12 days, and tomorrow will be the 12th. Of
course that depended on whether there was a mail in Tsona
or not. I do hope he managed to get one there.

12th July. Karutra. (about 13,000') 8 miles. Fine till 10, rain the

wet yet. I think rain has been scarce this year on the
whole so far. The path climbs steeply up the valley
side to Drotang, a small village with a good deal of
cultivation. A little beyond this and it goes level for
1/2 mile. Then most of the way a steep ascent through
