SUMMARY:
At around 14,000 ft the party camps on Yuto La, noting changing weather, a nearby water-turned prayer wheel tended by an elderly woman, and botanical work including primulas and seed collections. A man delivers biscuits and mangoes, the latter sent by Tobgye to HH by express runners. The following day is a halt with rain.

from Calcutta, not a thing remained when he got back home.
It really is a rotten system this present giving one, but it
seems very well established. Outside the window is a huge
water-turned prayer wheel. Beside it sits a woman acquiring as
much merit as possible. She sits by the door of the wheel house; in
one hand she is turning a prayer wheel, while she turns her beads over
in the other. She must feel that she is very old indeed.

20th July. Yuto La. 9 miles. BP. Temp. Time Ht. More or
less fine till the evening. Camp actually on the pass, hope to see
to N-S during the next two days. One primula is still in
flower here, No 3465 (P. smithiana 3465 - see 12th June), which we took before in the Longto Chu,
3250 (P. sikkimensis 3250). I got a fair amount of seed from some taken pretty low
down, where the lowest of often 6 whorls were ripe (Geranium 3466). The next
few days are more and more going to be a trial (Clematis 3467). On the pass a
man was waiting patiently for me, with a basket of biscuits
& another of mangoes! The latter are sent by Tobgye to HH by
express runners (Presents). It is a very kind thought, but an awful waste
of money, especially on me, as I don't particularly care for them.

Yuto La Camp.
21st July. Halt. Thunder again last evening. Fine for an hour or
two this morning, then rain most of the day. We went up the

SUMMARY:
Notes from Tsarang La on July 18 record several Primula, including P. dryadifolia with a pompom of soft white hairs at the throat, very profuse P. valentiniana, rare P. chamaethauma, and a notable Primula in the nivalis section with withered yellow flowers. P. valentiniana was also seen a few miles west of Langing in early June, and additional taxa are listed.

Tsongpen's of our Type Tsarang La

  1. Primula dryadifolia Sect. From the roots I take this to be a primula in the Dryadifolia Section. But it has a marked pompom of soft white hairs at the throat. Very pretty when seen in close flowering mats on the open hillside.

5866 Primula valentiniana Tsarang La
The furthest West this was seen was a few miles W. of Langing, in the beginning of June, just in flower. It is in full flower here, very profuse indeed.

5867 Primula chamaethauma. Tsarang La
Appears very rare here, only 5 plants being seen. Further West very common. I have not compared it with 5589 or 3893, but the leaves appear very rough in this specimen.

  1. Primula nivalis Sect. (aff. calliantha Tsarang La sino purpurea ?) Probably the same as No. 5785, the withered flowers of which I took to be yellow. The withered flowers of 5872 also appear yellow. A magnificent primula, very reminiscent of P. obliqua in the way the adaxial lobes are reflexed. Only one specimen seen shows the candelabra effect, with 2 rings of three flowers each. Otherwise 1-, 2-, or 3-flowered, usually 2-. Not common.

SUMMARY:
Notes a plan for Tsongpen Tenduk to visit the Pelada camp to collect items including primula seed, mentions a north-trending valley with seasonal yak herders’ huts, and describes rainy halts at Marulhang on the Rinchen Chu with exploratory walks over passes. Observations include Primula alpicola (luna), Meconopsis bella, and other alpine species, though little new was found.

large flowered geranium 3356, of which we only saw two specimens.
Tsongpen Tenduk will go over to our camp on Pelada of 6th-10th June tomorrow & pick up a few things there, including, I hope, seed of the new primula.
The valley goes away north for a good long way apparently, & I intend to follow it up for a day or two. No houses here, but a few huts, occupied for a short time later, by the yak herdsmen. No others are allowed here except for a very few days while passing to other grazing ground.

3rd July. Halt. Marulhang, Rinchen Chu. Rained all day. Purbo & I went up a side valley to the East, over a pass & into another N-S valley beyond. Then north & over another pass, back by a side valley coming down 1/2 m above camp. We saw a good deal of the primula 3353 (P. alpicola luna), & a good deal of Meconopsis bella 3361 (entire leaf form), but little else of interest which was new. Anemone rupicola 3358, P. sapphirina, pusilla & Hopeana are everywhere at the right height. A pretty beastly day.

4th July. Halt. Marulhang, Rinchen Chu. Rained very hard all day & all last night. Purbo & I went upstream & worked in some side valleys, but not high, and found nothing but a primula of the Sikkimensis section No 3370 (P. alpicola luna). It appears to be somewhat like P. 3353, in leaf shape, but it has nothing of farina; the corolla is rather smaller and not such a green-

From LANGONG to MOLO via the TSE LA. Follow down the L bank of the Langong Chu to m 2, where a large valley comes in from 350° M. This is followed up through forest to m 4, where the valley opens out a little & a series of grassy wet meadows is met. At m 5, the main valley comes from the N. West, this is left, & a small, narrow & steep valley is followed up to the North. The ascent to m 6 is very steep through rhododendrons & the path difficult for any transport but yaks. At m 6 a small meadow is reached, this forms a suitable camping ground. Rhododendron fuel available. (BP. 186.4. T. 50° 3.30pm. 21.6.38). This camp is called YAMTO.

Tse La June 22

  1. Primula hyacinthina. Does not always have farina on back of the leaves. One specimen has none.

From camp the ascent is very steep over scree to the Tse La at a bearing of 35
