SUMMARY:
Detailed route description from Rong up the side valley via Ringdi Kenza to Lagyari, noting meadows, a Dzong, a gompa, and cultivation. Continues from Lagyari to Lasor over the Putrang/Potrang La (16,470 ft), with steep descents and hills covered in rhododendron, rose, berberis, willow, and birch, and mentions limited supplies. Notes Gent. Waltoni as common along the Tsangpo between Tsetang, Rong, and Lagyari Dzong.

From Rong path leads up the side valley to the South. Path quite good up the R bank, then (in winter) up the valley bed. At m 4 1/2 the valley splits at Ringdi Kenza and the more easterly one is taken. At m 6 path crosses to L bank, climbs 300 ft, then drops again as a valley turns eastward. Path then up L bank or in valley bed, good the whole way. Grass meadows in the valley bed are met about m 12 and the valley opens out to Lagyari, a straggling, but considerable place, with a large Dzong and a gompa. Quite a lot of cultivation and trees. Independent Dzong.

Gent. Waltoni common on almost all rocky hillsides down Tsangpo. Noticed between Tsetang and Rong, and between Rong and Lagyari Dzong.

Lagyari - Lasor. 16 miles. Path follows up R bank of the main river, sometimes climbing pretty high on the R bank, where it follows mostly a water channel cut in side of side valley. A good deal of cultivation is passed and some small villages. After dropping to the main valley, up which it goes for 1/2 mile, it climbs steeply to the last village and thence 2 1/2 more miles to the Potrang La, 16,470, at m 11. Descent on E side much steeper and more direct. The hills on the E side are well covered with rhododendron, rose, berberis, willow, birch and other scrub. Before reaching Lasor the descent eases off. Some cultivation and a few stores such as eggs available.

SUMMARY:
The diary records a halt with fine weather, Tsonpen’s recovery, collecting G. Waltoni seeds, paying off coolies, and concern about snow on the Drichung La and Le La while planning to reach Chayul to meet Tenduk and Danang. The next day brought strong winds, continued seed searches including Ceratostigma, and frustration that many seeds (Primula, Meconopsis, Rhododendron) were eaten by bugs.

...been bad enough for that. We got a pretty good collection of ripe seeds of Gent. Waltoni, but otherwise nothing.

29th October. Halt. Fine all day, but clouded in the morning: much new snow near the Kashong La. Tsonpen is much better today, & should be fit by the morning. Collected two more packets of G. Waltoni. Paid off all coolies at the rate of 3 shao a day. I am now anxious to get to Chayul, & meet Tenduk & Danang & hear how they have got on. There is a lot of snow up the Drichung La range, & I hope there has not been too much on the Le La. The gyunpo says the Drichung La is never closed, but sometimes after snow, they cannot cross it for a few days.

30th October. Kap. 8m. A beautiful morning till 11.0, then clouded over snow on the hills all round. A very strong cold wind blowing up the valley. Got a few more G. Waltoni seed, searched for Ceratostigma seed. But we could only find four seeds. Every bush has been attacked by some bug & all seeds eaten, most annoying. I wonder if this year is specially bad that way, because nearly all seeds have been eaten, Primula, Meconopsis & worst of all, Rhododendron.

SUMMARY:
Travel from above Natrampa to Karubra and then near Kashongla with generally cloudy, wet weather and some snow higher up. Seeds of several plants were collected, and the party met a Sikkim lama from near Trashi Trongmo who spoke some Nepali. Distances and times between camps are noted.

7th October. Camp above Natrampa. 6 miles. 11500'. Cloudy all day, with a little fine drizzle. The clouds come rushing up the valley from Lung, and gradually fade away, but it is still generally wet. Found some seed of Gent. Waltoni ripe, the little yellow sedum, and the yellow Dracocephalum: also the Thalictrum collected at Zumsati. Coolies very happy but exceptionally slow. Left camp at 6.30, reached here at 12.0 noon.

8th October. Karubra. Another very short day, in at 11.00. We could see that beyond the Duchung La it was absolutely clear all morning. Here the sun shone most of the day, but it also rained nearly all afternoon. Monsoon clouds come up to the main range, and just fade away. Got seeds of the blue Dracocephalum and P. pulchelloides, an aquilegia and the big scrophularia, and a few of the small androsace. The big one is not yet ripe. Here we met a Sikkim lama, who had forgotten all his Lepcha but could talk a little Nepali. He comes from near Trashi Trongmo, where he has been for 14 years: a nice man.

9th October. Camp 2 m W of Kashongla. 14000'. A most disappointing day. It rained all night, and snow was down to 500' above Karubra.
