SUMMARY:
The page records route conditions and weather from Mihrang La via Tendong La, joining the Cua La–Chosam route, with observations of flowering gentians. It notes work at Chosam (Tsari), including collecting primula seed and other plant finds, and describes a steep ascent over Sur La to camp at the Tso Bunang Lakes with further gentian observations.

Mihrang La
c 15 miles below Teemaiting Mihrang La & Tendong La

First steep over shale, then level up to the Tendong La (16000') at m 4. Thence descent easy over grass in broad valley, joining the Cua La - Chosam route at m 7. A perfect day of bright sun all day. Found G. nubigena 2033 (Gen. przewalskii 2033, Gen. aglaia 2034, Gen. algida parviflora 2035) full out between the two passes, looking lovely.

14th August. Chosam, Tsari. 14200' 9 m. A lovely day till about 4.0 pm when there was some rain. Got seed of a little primula found here before, now under No 2044 (P. walshii 2044, sikkimensis 2037). Also found a fine gentian by camp, very like waltonii, but differing in the size of the leaves, especially the basal ones (Gent. sikkimensis 2037, prolata 2038, traversii 2039, Gentianella stellariifolia 2039). Other finds: Cyananthus lobatus 2036, lichiangensis 2042, Cremanthodium palmatum rhodocephalum 2040.

15th August. Tso Bunang Lakes Camp. 5 m. 13500'. Another fine day, with just a little rain last night. Route climbs very steeply indeed to the Sur La from Chosam village. Sur La 16000 crossed at 1 1/2. (Aconitum longipedicellatum sp. nov. 2049, Aconitum tsariense sp. nov. 2076). Thence pretty steep descent for 1 1/2 m till rhododendron then fir forest is met (P. crispa 2048). Final steep descent to the head of the second (from South) lake at m 5. A most beautiful camp, as pretty as one could wish for. There are four lakes, each about 500 yards long & 20-40' below each other. On the N side of the pass, found a good many gentians, including G. stictantha 2056 (przewalskii), which was fully out in a few places. The others were...

SUMMARY:
At Tso Burnag Lake Camp, the writer describes fir- and rhododendron-covered hillsides, notes deer sign, and mentions Gulla suffering severe pain after Lumsden treated his poisoned foot. The writer and Lumsden bathe in the cold lake at high altitude. On 16th August, they halt and search hillsides east of the lakes, find no new plants, and the writer briefly encounters a herd of burhel without success.

neither so big nor so interesting. Hillsides well covered with fir for 500 ft. then rhododendron. Many crenophilum about, and much deer, and there are said to be kuling also. Gulla had a rotten day today. His foot is poisoned, Lumsden cut it 2 days ago, putting in a local anaesthetic in a septic wound. The result is awful pain to poor old Gulla. L. has made a mess of everything he has done in that way, and can only give iodine with safety. This afternoon, as it was sunny, Lumsden and I had a bathe in the lake, which shelves down pretty quickly just 10 yards in front of our camp. It was cold of course, though not as bad as I would have thought. The temp of the water was 51°. Swimming at 13000' is hard work, and I only went out 10 yards or so. It was lovely, especially when out!

Tso Burnag Lake Camp.
16th August. Halt. Tried the hillside to the E of the lakes. But they held nothing new, and the only gentian in any numbers was G. stictantha (?? Przewalskii), which was not yet out. I walked almost into a herd of 20 burhel, but had my eyes on a cliff. They were off at once, though I just had time to change ammunition and have two snapshots at them without doing any damage.

SUMMARY:
At Tso Blerang Lake Camp the diarist surveyed gentians near Changchu La, marking Delphinium viscosum (2096), Lomatogonium deltoideum (2095), and a clump of G. stictantha, but rain prevented photography; a pin-tail snipe was shot at 15,000 feet. The following day involved an 8-mile move to Senguti via Sun La and Churam in heavy rain, noting P. capitata as common and no new gentians on Sun La.

leptopuccile, but does not agree with anything in the F.B.I.

I saw four 'kuling', but was unable to get a shot at any of them with any chance of success.

20th August. Halt. Tso Blerang Lake Camp. Our last day here. It rained all day, anyhow up towards the Changchu La, where I went in the morning.

I marked there a few Delphinium 2096 (Delphinium viscosum), in an opening in the rhododendron forest, about the same place - just below, beside the river, the little gentian like a Swertia 2095 (Lomatogonium deltoideum). There seemed no need to mark G. otophora.

Dancing gentian 2092, as once over the steep ridge - about 1 mile short of the pass, it is almost everywhere, especially on SE banks. I put up a few stones - to the right of where we first met 2092 - to mark a good clump of G. stictantha (przewalskii). Just as we got up the hill all gentians closed tight, and I had no chance of a photo with any flowers open at all - a great disappointment. Nor did any open all the time I was there. Shot a pin tail snipe at 15000'.

21st August. Senguti (13500?). 8 miles. (To Senguti. Base Camp on May 16). It rained very hard indeed all yesterday evening and night, and has rained all today, hard in the afternoon. Saw no new gentians on the Sun La. From Churam here P. capitata is common. The big Churam gentian like Waltoni.

SUMMARY:
At Bimbi La Camp, Tenduk brought in plants and a Tsongpen sent seed from Chuchar; subsequent halts record collecting seeds of Primula and Gentiana near a pass, with fine weather followed by rain. On the 9th, Lumsden, D and Tenduk accompanied the diarist toward Bimbi La and a talao, collected Androsace seed, and shot three partridges, while mail from Sanga Choling was delayed.

P. muscoides 2567 P. macrophylla 2560, 2561
It was fine again again, a perfect night, & only a small
thunder shower in the day. Lovely evening again. Took what
may be another gentian like the Chusam one, up the hill
Gent. trichotoma var. brevicaulis 2558, Gentian phyllocalyx seed 2559

Bimbi La Camp
9th Sept. Halt. Lumsden, D, Tenduk & I went up towards the Bimbi
La, collected some androsace seed, then on to the talao, where
we found some partridges & shot three. Lumsden got one in flight
with No. 2 dust shot. Also saw a lot of G. ornata (?) &
higher up some fine specimens of G. stictantha & some seed
of P. glabra. Then we went on past a dying glacier, over the
ridge to the right & down an awful scree to where Lumsden
had shot kuling before. A lovely day: fine all day. Out
from 7.0 till 3.0pm.

Bimbi La Camp
10th Sept. Halt. Stayed in camp. Rain most of the day, though
P. sikkimensis pantlingii 2568
never very heavy. Still no sign of our mail, which the Sanga
Choling people must be delaying, damn them.
