SUMMARY:
Notes describe Sakden as excellent for birds and plants; the party returned in autumn to collect seeds and study the avifauna, obtaining a new Fulvetta. Species observations include Fulvetta ludlowi common in bamboo and rhododendron forest on the extreme eastern frontier of Bhutan, and finding Tragopan satyra instead of T. b. molesworthi in dense rhododendron within silver fir forest.

Sakden
Ibis. 15. We found Sakden excellent for birds & plants & we returned to it in the autumn to collect seeds & study its avifauna more closely. We obtained here a new Fulvetta.

Ibis. 38. Fulvetta ludlowi - quite common in bamboo & rhododendron forest on the extreme eastern frontier of Bhutan between 7500 & 11000 ft. see Ibis 38
rather intensely open sub-alpine

Ibis 44 Pteruthius xanthochloris xanthochloris - Green Shrike Babbler
Ibis 278 Prunella immaculata rare. very tame in conifer forest. - Maroon Backed Accentor
Ibis 291 Homochlamys major Bush Warbler - see Ibis 291

We expected to find Tragopan b. molesworthi here, as we were so close to the supposed type locality, but all the birds we saw were T. satyra - Tragopan
dense rhodo jungle in silver fir forest is its favourite habitat - very plentiful in Bhutan

SUMMARY:
Notes record Fulvetta ludlowi first observed at Yonpula (8000 ft) on 29 Feb, later found at multiple localities, with its distribution mainly south of the main range in East Bhutan, the Nyam Jang Chu valley, upper Subansiri, and Pachakshiri. F. striaticollis striaticollis is noted from the Tsari valley below Chosam eastward to Gyala, extending into Western Szechwan and Yunnan, with habitat and behavior remarks including its confiding nature.

L. 21. 81. Found at Yonpula (8000) 29 Feb. for the first time on the trip.
Fulvetta ludlowi. Later they also found at Takhto, Pangchen, Lepo, Trimo, Lung, Lo La, Nyug La.
Common species south of main range, in East Bhutan, the Nyam Jang Chu valley, the upper Subansiri at Lung, in the Pachakshiri district. Ext from long 91° 30' to long 94° 15' does not occur north of the main range where it is replaced by another sp. of Fulvetta.

F. striaticollis striaticollis w. d. seen for the first time in the Tsari valley below Chosam. From Tsari they traced it eastward to Gyala whence it extends into Western Szechwan & Yunnan. Confined to forested areas on the main range where the rainfall though considerable, is far less heavy than it is in the south. In the summer, has a wide altitudinal range in habitat, scrubbing rather than trees, in parkland of rhodo & holly oak growth.

Moreover seems to be a characteristic trait of the genus Fulvetta, F. ludlowi is so confiding that I have watched it feeding quite unconcernedly within a couple of yards where I was standing.

SUMMARY:
At Lung, the party halted for several days of fine weather while shooting birds and searching unsuccessfully for tragopan. The diarist notes rough valley paths, collects some rhododendron seeds, and remarks that other rhododendron seeds are not yet ripe.

Lung
20th October. Halt. The first fine day we have had since the 4th Oct.
Wind from the North, cloudy but bright. Went down the valley a
bit - wandered round the flat part below camp. Shot four birds -
saw two woodcock about a mile down. Tsongpen & the gyimpon will go
off early in the morning to look for tragopan.

21st October. Halt. Another beautiful day, fine all day. Tsongpen &
the gyimpon spent from 6 am till 2.30 pm looking in the jungle for
tragopan, but they saw none, not even any signs of them. So
I'm afraid we are unlikely to get any here now, though I have
two more days to do up on the hillside.

Lung
22nd October. Halt. Fine all day, with a very strong wind: clouded
over in the evening & looks like rain. Tsongpen & I went down a
good long way in the main valley - 5 hours. The path is
really pretty dreadful, hardly ever level for 10 yards, & as much
on notched logs & ordinary logs as on the ground. It is far the
worst I have seen anywhere this year. Shot a Heteroxenicus
stellatus, Sylviparus & Fulvetta ludlowi in beautiful plumage, saw
two or three nutcrackers. The cinnabarinum rhododendron is
not yet ripe, but I took some seeds to try. The big maddenii
R. crassum seed
2332 & 2338 were not ripe, but further down I came across one
