SUMMARY:
The diarist spoke with Tibetans, mostly from Tsona, who make wooden bowls and snuff boxes and report that Tsari is good for flowers. The page records Kingdon Ward’s route through numerous passes and places and his recommendations for rich collecting areas near Chayul Dz, the Lore Chu, Tsari, and Takpa Shiri, noting a Primula on Targa La and seeds of Karta iris and Dracocephalum.

CONTENT:
been here. Today we went & talked to some Tibetans, of
whom there are a number. Mostly come from Tsona, &
spent the spring here turning wooden bowls which they
sell for 1 tankha. Some make snuff boxes too. Nearly
everyone seems to have been to Tsari sometime, & a
number of people say it is a good place for flowers.

Kingdon Ward's route was over the Tulung La & Pen La -
Karta - Chayul - Trön - Drichung La - Charme - Sanga Chöling -
Cha La - Chösam - Chikchar - Migyitun - Bimba La, Kyimdong
to Pome & back much the same way. He says - 'the
country E & N of Chayul Dz is very rich. I got an adequate
idea of the vegetation throughout, but not of the flora. ---
I suggest as good collecting places, the N face of the
main Himalaya reached from a village on the right
bank of the Lore Chu a few miles below Chayul Dz,
just after crossing the bridge; & the whole of Tsari,
especially the valleys on the south side of Takpa Shiri.
--- There is a beautiful new Sikkimensis Primula on
the Targa La of which I did not get seed. I did get seed
of the Karta iris, a fine blue Dracocephalum above

SUMMARY:
The diary notes arrival at Sanga Chöling after severe cold, the first fine day in some time, active seed collecting and drying of specimens, and a letter from Ludlow with specimen numbers. It records news of Tarka’s party (with Tendrup and Tsering), plans to proceed via Tsona toward Trashigang, kindness from Ashi Gyelmo, and missing photo enlargements likely held by the Kharpon Dzongpon. The party then marches to Charme with transport arranged, while men sent with rice by the HH of Bhutan fail to locate them.

CONTENT:
be glad to reach Sanga Chöling tomorrow. I purposely took no riding ponies today, as it was far too cold to ride, and would be dangerous, but Simba got on a spare pony till I spotted him, by which time he was almost too cold to walk. Everyone laughed at him, which certainly did him good.

29th October. Sanga Chöling. Fine at last. Our first day without rain or snow since leaving the Loka, we are all very glad to have it. It is reasonably warm down here too, though a strong wind blows all day. Got seed of Gentiana waltonii; Primula jaffreyana var. hyacinthina, & 2 Dracocephalums. Found a letter from Ludlow & R. vellereum 6645, Dracocephalum hemsleyanum 6646, Frac. 6647.
Tarka here: they left on 21st & seemed in good form, & have got a fine lot of seeds, more probably than I have since we last saw each other. But of course Tarka has both Tendrup & Tsering with him, & although rainy in Tsari, they had no snow. Tarka sent off Tendrup for seed & seedlings of Meconopsis sherriffii, to the Drichung La, so I will not have to go up there either. We will stop here two days & then go on without a halt to Tsona if possible, reaching there I hope on the 11th Nov. If Pemba is there, I hope I may then be able to send off Tarka's mail so as to catch him still in India. Ashi Gyelmo has been very kind, & provided a hot lunch of gyathuk on our arrival, & has sent potatoes & other things down already. She is a kind soul. The peach, Ludlow said, looked awful, covered in kutch. But she must have been taken unawares, as she has now a clean face & is as much a peach as ever. The enlargements I took of her have never turned up. The Kharpon Dzongpon must have them still.

30th & 31st October. Halt Sanga Chöling. Fine: clouded at night. Bright sun & strong wind during the day. Spent these days in camp, repacked roots of primulas, got out the dry specimens & got seeds all dried. The air is very dry indeed, & everything was soon dry.

1st Nov. To Charme. We got a letter sent on about transport, so had no difficulties with changes today, & got to Charme by noon. Dry & sunny with a very strong cold wind up the valley. Clouds over the main range, & a lot of snow on the hills south of Kaprang, but we don't see any up towards the La. I hope now to go through to Trashigang without a stop, eleven days to Tsona, & another 6 or 7 from there on to Trashigang. HH of Bhutan sent four men with rice to meet us, but did not know where we were, these poor people spent a long time wandering

SUMMARY:
Travel from above Natrampa to Karubra and then near Kashongla with generally cloudy, wet weather and some snow higher up. Seeds of several plants were collected, and the party met a Sikkim lama from near Trashi Trongmo who spoke some Nepali. Distances and times between camps are noted.

CONTENT:
7th October. Camp above Natrampa. 6 miles. 11500'. Cloudy all day, with a little fine drizzle. The clouds come rushing up the valley from Lung, and gradually fade away, but it is still generally wet. Found some seed of Gent. Waltoni ripe, the little yellow sedum, and the yellow Dracocephalum: also the Thalictrum collected at Zumsati. Coolies very happy but exceptionally slow. Left camp at 6.30, reached here at 12.0 noon.

8th October. Karubra. Another very short day, in at 11.00. We could see that beyond the Duchung La it was absolutely clear all morning. Here the sun shone most of the day, but it also rained nearly all afternoon. Monsoon clouds come up to the main range, and just fade away. Got seeds of the blue Dracocephalum and P. pulchelloides, an aquilegia and the big scrophularia, and a few of the small androsace. The big one is not yet ripe. Here we met a Sikkim lama, who had forgotten all his Lepcha but could talk a little Nepali. He comes from near Trashi Trongmo, where he has been for 14 years: a nice man.

9th October. Camp 2 m W of Kashongla. 14000'. A most disappointing day. It rained all night, and snow was down to 500' above Karubra.

SUMMARY:
Notes prolific flowering and collections including a new primula (P. jaffreyana 2257), an iris (2251), Incarvillea lutea (2252), and Thalictrum chelidonii. Reports shortage of drying paper, and mail issues: the runner found no mail at Tsona but had a chit from the Dzongpen; outgoing mail was forwarded by the Dzongpen and more is to be sent via Chayul.

...see how much more prolific the flowers were on this side. The most interesting things were a new primula P. jaffreyana 2257. Common to quite low down. A beautiful iris 2251, which I think is near the K.W.'s Karta iris, a queer lily-like affair 2252 (Incarvillea lutea), I don't know what it is.

Thalictrum chelidonii was in flower about halfway here, beautiful as ever. There were also a number of shrubs in flower too. Altogether yesterday I collected 20 different species. Now I have no paper left to put the dried flowers in. No mail turned up, but the runner is there. He found no mail in Tsona. We thought he was doing us down, but he had a chit from the Dzongpen which shows he was alright. Our last outgoing mail was still lying there, but both were sent on by the Dzongpen.

30th June. Halt. Sanga Choling. Another perfect day. Packed up mail to send off tomorrow via Chayul. Packed up as many dried flowers as possible, but have no paper; with this confounded tamasha going on, I cannot get hold of anyone. I now only have about 80 sheets of drying paper to play about with, which is...
