SUMMARY:
The diarist describes severe weather around Pomo Tso, including hail, snow, and rain, and notes finding a small delphinium near the lake’s southeast corner. On 11th September, they outline routes from Tö Monastery toward Ling Dzong via Yo La or Ling La, with details of terrain, flocks, streams, and gradual ascents and descents.

violent hail storm came on, which turned into snow

Notes describe views of Singhi Dzong and the Kuru Chu gorge, photographing types and views at Lala, and local reactions to camp gear and flowers (including delphinium used as a 'louse killer'). The Jongpen has gone to Lhasa with Williamson, affecting transport, while the party camps in a sheltered field and tends seedlings amid wind and impending frost.

Their name for the delphinium is "louse killer". I suppose they imagine we carry it about for that purpose. They make it into a paste & put it in their clothes. The box of flowers also causes great amusement. But when we arrive in camp, the greatest attraction is seeing a camp bed & chair put together. Everyone will close round & just stand & gaze at it. The scenery yesterday was fine - the gorge of the Kuru Chu, the little villages we passed through; and the people themselves - all were interesting. The Jongpen here has gone to Lhasa with Williamson, so has his steward, so I don't know how we will fare for transport. His wife acts in his place. The Dzong is a fine building on a rock in the valley, with a gompa below it. Our camp is in a lovely green field, surrounded by trees & out of the strong wind. The seedlings seem to have lasted well so far, but the wind will be a trial to them here. It is so dry & different to what they are used to. I water them twice a day, with that perhaps all will be well. There will soon be frost, then presumably I can let them dry off. Last night we were both pretty ill-tempered for a while. When we reached here in the dark, we found that the man responsible had sent all our kit to the

today. Found a lovely very bright blue delphinium. There must have been many flowers here, but we are too late. The Dzongpen of Lhakang knows of our arrival, & sent up to meet us & find out what we wanted in the way of transport. Sent Kusho in the morning to tell him.

1st September. To H 10000 LHAKANG DZONG. 12200' 10 miles. Cross the river to R. bank immediately below camp. Path then easy but fairly steep through scrub jungle & fir forest to m 3 1/2, where the river is again crossed to L bank. The whole way, Waterfalls of great height (vertical drop 500') also occur. there are extremely precipitous cliffs on the North side of the valley, while the South side is covered with conifer jungle. From m 3 1/2 to m 5 the path climbs steadily, but is very good. Thence it descends for half a mile & climbs again over a shoulder at m 6. From here to m 7 it is nearly level. At m 7 the conifers are completely left behind, & the path is broad & easy over a dry hillside covered with gooseberry, berberis & other shrubs. It gradually descends to at m 10 Lhakang, passing a small village at m 9. Lhakang

Diary entries note plant collections and observations around Migitun and a camp above Nga La, with heavy mosquitoes and heat. Delphinium from P.S. which may or may not be different. Here at camp there is a large thistle which is very handsome, growing to about 8 ft high. Danong went up the hill to look for seeds of some primulas, & found only a few of two. He came across two bears up there. Mosquitoes are very bad indeed down here, but all, so far, Stegomyia, not Anopheles. (P. glabra 2497, P. dickieana pantlingii 2498, P. sandemaniana 2499). A few specimens of the primula with hairy leaves pressed under No. 2499.

26th August. Migitun. 9500' 5 miles. Reasonably fine all morning. (Rhod. megeratum 2505, Spiranthes sinensis 2509, Aconitum volubile 2510, bulbiferum). Very hot & enervating down here. (Migitun).

27th, 28th, 29th August. Halt. Usually fine in the morning. Midges, flies & mosquitoes very bad. Danong & Tsongpen have worked the valley W. of Migitun & got some new flowers & a few seeds, & have been up the E. valley only for seed of the little yellow primula. A sikkimensis primula of (P. loessa sp. nov. type 2514, P. prenantha 2516) a beautiful pink mauve colour 2514 is abundant in the valley W. of Migitun. I think this is the one I found (Frag. globosa 2525, Acon. bulbiferum 2517, Acon. souliei 2523) between Mupa & Tama La, though perhaps the flower is not so big. It has a fine scent, & grows very prettily. (Migitun - Nga).

30th August. Camp above Nga La. 5 miles Ht. 12800'. (Gentiana palaeocristata sp. nov. 2527). Fine for an hour or two in the morning: rain the rest of the day. I think we...

2100 Aconitum longipedicellatum sp. nov. - long lax inflorescence & slender arching pedicels - a distinct & most striking species. - blue violet - never seen again
is also down here, in the little patches of juniper. A few Notholirion
campanulatum on the path from Chusam here, but very few & far
between. P. whitei has thrown its seed. Everything here has grown
enormously. The grass where not eaten is a couple of feet high.

22nd August. Chuichchar. 11 miles. 13000' After an awful night of
rain, it was just fine all day till about 2.0pm, then steady
but light rain the rest of the day. The path was in a filthy
mess all the way down. Cyananthus lobatus is lovely all the
way, particularly near Yarap & here. The Chusam gentian is
very common here among shrubs & rhododendrons. C. stylophora
is in seed but not yet ripe. Lumsden is in a peevish
temper today, having lost his braces in the morning! I
think because everyone laughed when they were found in
his bedding here, he is still more peeved.

23rd August. Halt. Fine till about 1.0pm. I went up the valley
W of Chuichchar, & had quite a good day. P. valentiniana is in seed,
barely ripe, P. 1621 has thrown a lot of seed, others are still some
in flower. Whole areas of steep hillside are absolutely covered
with Cyananthus lobatus. I saw three white plants, & marked
each with a stone. Also got seed of a white alpine Delphinium,

When we were here last, they were only about 2-3 inches up. Dzongpen has gone off to the Drokpa La today with the Trim jigmpu & a coolie, leaving Tenduk, Ahmad Sheikh & I with 14 coolies to go on via Chagal. Nothing of any interest here, no birds worth recording.

24th July. Chagal Dzong. 6 m. Fine all day, with clouds & sun. Rain last night. A dull march in, with nothing much to see. Plenty of Ceratostigma on the hillside, & a lot at camp on the N side of the river. The little Primula tibetica collected here on our way to Lung first time, is still in bloom, & has a scape about 2" long. Also a very bright yellow Pedicularis, all over the boggy meadow. Dzongpen very kind. I see him tomorrow. Tenduk visited him this afternoon.
