Bela La to Paro, Aug 10
LSH/1/1/5/1/187 · Part · 1933-08-14
Part of The Ludlow & Sherriff Collection

SUMMARY:
Slight rain on the descent from Bela La to Paro; arrival about 1 pm, followed by a visit from Paro from 2 pm to 6 pm, whose over-familiar manner and open dislike of the Maharaja are noted, with mention of the death of his mother Ashi Palden and inquiries about floating logs down the Wangde Chu. Botanical notes record Cyananthus incanus (3564), Cyananthus lobatus (3565), Codonopsis convolvulacea (3568), and a Codonopsis resembling C. vinciflora with a wine-red ring at the corolla base and hairs to the ring.

Slight rain today. Arrived in about 1.0pm. Then Paro came to me at 2.0pm stayed till 6.0pm. He is quite easy to talk to and has lots to say, but I'm not sure that I like him very much. He is too friendly - in fact he embraced me many times, rubbed his forehead on my chest and clutched my hand for as long as he could. He most certainly does not like the Maharaja and said so pretty openly. The late Maharaja he liked but not this one. He sometimes says one thing, sometimes another; he never told him I was coming so on and so on. I did not like the way he talked at all. A good deal is probably due to the death of Ashi Palden his Mother, who had a very good influence over him. I fancy he was trying to get something out of me, and was asking about floating logs down the Wangde Chu.

On the way down from the pass we found a Codonopsis which looks like Codonopsis vinciflora, but has a ring of wine red at the base of the corolla and hairs from the base to the ring

SUMMARY:
Notes list specimens 5887–5906 with habitat and identification comments on several Primula species and Meconopsis integrifolia. It records that Taylor obtained P. rotundifolia further east and includes additional taxa such as Cyananthus, Pedicularis, Geranium, Cotoneaster, and Saxifraga.

No. Taylor got rotundifolia further East.

5887 Primula Littledalei. This seems to have taken the place of 3892 (P. rotundifolia). It has much the same habitat, but does also grow out in the open on grassy ledges of the hillside. These taken from the lower altitude were in the mixed Abies rhododendron forest, which is quite unlike P. rotundifolia. They were growing just at the upper limit of P. Jaffreyana close to this. — at what I would suppose to be a very low altitude for a Rotundifolia primula.

  1. Primula hyacinthina. I don't know this form of P. bellidifolia. It has the thick farina on the back of the leaves like P. hyacinthina, but is a very small primula, much smaller than what I have seen of the latter. The usual height would be about 4"-5".

  2. Primula amabilis. I don't know this. The capsules look rather like a nivalid primula, but otherwise the plant does not. We were too late for any flowers.

5890 Primula rhodochroa. At first I thought of a dwarf kind of P. atrodentata, which it resembles in some ways. But flowers are nearly all single.

5891 Meconopsis integrifolia. Only seen growing in a very small area 50' x 50'. Flowers mostly over. There are many old scapes still standing in clumps, but the plant has old leaves at the base, just above the roots. The fresh flowers are a fine colour. Habitat is very similar to Mec. superba or Mec. Sherriffii.

SUMMARY:
Travel from Gyantse to Dochen via Phari and Tuna with notes on weather, flowering plants, and limited seed collecting. Transport disputes with local headmen lead to a bribe; Pangdatshang intervenes, the party meets Dorje Tsering, exchanges currency, attempts wildfowl hunting, and receives letters of introduction from Tsarong.

CONTENT:
21st October. Gyantse. Very fine day after three days of heavy rain. We are not taking any specimens yet, but only a few seeds here & there. Today there were several fine clumps of Gentiana amoena in full bloom. Besides these there are many of a sp. of small blue Swertia, some Asters, Cyananthus lobatus, the usual odd blooms of Rhod. cinnabarinum which always appear in October. The Headmen of Yatung lived up to their reputation. They will not supply transport at the rates laid down. We have transport from Kalimpong to Gyantse, & yesterday the headmen tried to stop it going beyond Yatung. However Pangdatshang ordered them to let us go without hindrance.

22 October. Phari. Very cold in the morning, with thin clouds. Cleared up later and was lovely. Met by Dorje Tsering this time. Exchanged rupees at 3.35 sangs per rupee. The only seeds collected were P. bellidifolia. I could not find P. tenella under the snow.

23rd October. Tuna. A clear but very cold day indeed until we reached Shabra Shubra, about 12.15. As usual we could not get off to time, even though we had our own through transport. Last night the Phari headmen demanded a bribe. We could take our own transport if we liked, they said: if we did then they would of course not supply any other sahibs. Rs 20 bribe paid that night. Saw no gazelle or game of any kind.

24 October. Dochen. Fine still. Went after duck & geese in the afternoon. Have seen but we could get near nothing. Got a large letter from Tsarong enclosing several letters to people on our way. These should be very useful later on. All are in Tibetan, so we have not been able to see yet who they are addressed to.

SUMMARY:
The diarist parts from Betty in heavy rain and reaches Ha after a fast five-hour journey, then halts there with very wet conditions from 18–20 August, attempting fishing with limited success and noting few flowers at this altitude. Letters mention Betty’s route toward Bumthang, Changu, Karponang, and Kalimpong, and the diarist suspects H.H. has held back missing mail.

CONTENT:
Cyananthus lobatus is in full flower too, and several Saxifrages and even Primula pusilla. When we left each other at 10:30, Betty to go on to India, or to return to Bumthang, the rain came down in solid sheets. With me it continued till after I reached Ha, which took 5 hours going fast. It was very sad leaving Betty, and I know she felt it very much not being able to finish her trip right in the seed collecting. She will have a very busy 2 1/2 months now till she flies back at the end of October—just as busy as we will have here I think.

18-19-20 August. Halt. Ha. All days very wet, either here or up the valley, or everywhere. River very full indeed, fuller than any high water marks on 18th and much discoloured. I tried fishing but could touch nothing at all that day. Other days fishing fair, but I have seen no fish over 1 1/2 lb, except on 19th one of perhaps 2 1/2 lb came to my fly—the only big fish seen. Ludlow would have called that a small fish in May. It seems that the time for fishing here is certainly not in the wettest part of the monsoon. Probably the best months are April, May, June and September. Got a letter back from Betty to say she reached Bumthang all right, but obviously very wet. She will now be on her way from Changu to Karponang, and in Kalimpong tomorrow, all being well. It has been very nice here, but one wants someone else to enjoy the place with. There are few flowers left at this altitude now, and so little interest except fishing. No news still of the missing mail. I think H.H. must have kept it till I return. Had a letter from him, but no mention of the mail in it.

SUMMARY:
Two halt days at Kashong La with short excursions up and down the valleys yielded several plant collections, including Cyananthus, Pedicularis, Gentiana, Lonicera, Primula, Delphinium, Saxifraga, and others. The diarist marked plants for seed, shot two wrens at 15,000 feet, and noted sightings of blood pheasant and musk deer; Primula Cawdoriana was abundant on nearby cliffs.

Kashong La - Sherriff

18th July, Halt. A reasonably fine day, with a little sun now & then, and much rain here. Only went up the valley towards the pass, but came across one or two interesting things.

Cyananthus Sherriffii 2390
Ped. schizanthoides 2389
" Bella 2391
G. przewalskii 2386
taylorii 239

A Cyananthus (lobatus?) 2390, a small pure white Pedicularis 2389, & a gentian 2386, which I think is G. nubigena. There was very little in flower, but I have marked off some coming over for seed. Shot two wrens, at 15,000' among large boulders, farther down.

19th July, Halt. Kashong La - Sherriff. Fine for an hour or two in the morning & a little in the evening. Went down the valley to the west, then up the other side, over the top & round right handed.

Lonicera myrtillus 2393
Gentiana taylorii 2392
Gent. coerulea aglaia 2401
Pr. morsheadiana 2396
" muscoides 2399
Pedicularis macrosiphon 2407, Ped. elwesii var. major 2403,
Delphin. beesianum 2400
Cyananthus Sherriffii 2402
Sax. drapana 2398
P. Cawdoriana

A fairly good day. Found a primula like sikkimensis, but much smaller 2396. I doubt if it will be more than a variety, though it looks rather different. Further up a delphinium, the first we have seen - 2400 - one I have not collected before. Another rather smaller cyananthus 2402 & a few other pedicularis & odd things. Did not take a gun with me, saw blood pheasant, & three musk deer. Prim Cawdoriana is very common on the cliffs of the nala across the valley from camp, all in full bloom.
