The Jimmy Ratter Archive represents a valuable collection that is of particular interest for the insight it offers into the entwined botanical and social histories of the Brazilian cerrado. The collection is diverse and idiosyncratic, and spans Jimmy’s professional and personal archives. The contents of the collection include correspondence, field diaries, funding proposals, financial records, drafts and edits of papers for publication, lecture notes, teaching materials, scientific data, photographic material, botanical and biological specimens, PhD manuscripts, and original illustrations.
The materials represented in the collection relate to Jimmy’s work in Brazil, including the various conservation projects he was involved in, and the many expeditions and collecting trips he participated in. Other items in the collection cover Jimmy’s early career, his various roles at the RBGE (including his teaching and supervisory roles), and the administration of the RBGE more generally.

• GB 235 JJT/1: Index to Botanical References & Publications – Foolscap Book “Army Book 72”: alphabetical indexed ledger, ms. entries and ms. and typescript loose sheets (includes ms. notes to RK, William Wright Smith, on botanical references, and typescript note from W. W. Smith, 1931–1937,) 1927. Index includes lists of bibliographic references to monographs and scholarly journals, with 6 pp. listing County Reports of Scotland (1794 to 1814) and England (1794 to 1815).
• GB 235 JJT/2: “Index to Rhododendrons & Primulas”: alphabetical indexed ledger, ms. entries and ms. and typescript loose sheets (includes misc. plant notes, typescript List of Works on Primulas, and ms. list of rhododendrons), 1923.
• GB 235 JJT/3: “Index to Scottish Botanists” in “The Portland Letter File”: alphabetical indexed ledger, with ms. loose sheets, Note inserted in file: “It is quite possible that this was compiled by Mr J T Johnstone, RBG Librarian. DMH [Douglas Henderson], 1973.”

Accrual: Article: 'India Rubber' by James Collins, formerly Government Economic Botanist and Librarian, Straits Settlement, etc. as published in 'The Cottager and Artisan', September 1897, pp.107-108, published by the Religious Tract Society, London. Also, a card with a poem on it: 'The Twins' by J. Rushton, on the back of which is a Note about the opening hours of the India Office Museum.

• A sketchbook of watercolour and pencil scenes, people and flowers from Scotland (including Ben Lomond, River Almond, Carlowrie and Craigiehall Wood), Jerusalem, Nazareth and Galilee, plus loose picture of white house, c.1922-1924
• Two herbarium specimens of historic interest, the first displaying "flowers that spent the night with me in my tent on Eggers Island", 30-31.08.1927, South Greenland, being Carex, Rhodida Rosea, Poa and Calamagrostis; the second displaying a rose from Mrs Mathieson's house, Nanortalik, October 1927; Rose from "Kirsteen", Julianehaab, Disko Island, 09/11/1927; and a carnation from Captain Pedersen's bouquet on leaving Copenhagen for Leith, December 1927.
• Wooden plant press (elm) with leather strap and blotting paper used by Hutchison and with the name C. de Leger inscribed within.
• In 2018 a catalogue, showcasing the Isobel Wylie Hutchison Collection, inspired by Hutchison and launched at Carlowrie Castle in October 2018, along with associated tote bag, was added to the collection.

•Numerous copies and photocopies of a pamphlet outlining the aims, membership, benefits and profile of The Institute of Horticulture.

Also stored with these items are photographs of a ship, ‘Cunard’, a group of people, and glass houses – all of them unlabelled. There is also an envelope of photographs labelled ‘Quarantine House Site during construction?’ (1988), given to Ross Kerby by Ken Grant.

•Toy Corgi Landrover annoteted 'Afghanistan 1968' along with 3x Afghan coins and 1x Scottish golf token [Bells Whisky] (RBGEA2020/006) - the Landrover was such a key member of the Afghanistan expedition team, that in 1962 Ian named a plant after it: Scrophularia landroveri (there is a scan of the herbarium specimen included in the box) and Ian has kept a toy model of the vehicle ever since 1968 presumably, until he donated it to the RBGE Archives in September 2019. https://stories.rbge.org.uk/archives/20869 (right click to open in new tab or window- recommended)
