Letter from Dr. William Aitken, Glasgow, to John Hutton Balfour

William Aitken encloses a specimen of Scalariform tissue from the Torbane Hill coal seam. He has been examining various samples of coals and stratified rocks since he saw Balfour and is now even more certain that the stratified slices of Cannel coal are NOT vegetable matter but are in the structure of the coal. He wishes Balfour success in demolishing Bennett and would enjoy hearing it when it takes place.

Letter from Lord Elcho to John Hutton Balfour

Letter from Lord Elcho to John Hutton Balfour dated 5 November 1853; "Sir, Before leaving Scotland I rec'd your letter and enclosures on the subject of the Palm House in the Royal Botanical Garden - I saw Sir W. Molesworth yesterday and impressed upon him the importance of speedily attending to it and I hope that some steps will be taken to rescue the Palms from the fate that awaits them should nothing be done."
