SUMMARY:
Entries describe travel from Mera over the Nyuhsang La to Rungzyung, with rhododendron and Primula collections, mist and patchy snow at higher elevations, and assistance from Puntso Dzongpen. The following day the route continues over the Choling La, with further specimens gathered and mention of Tanduk and Ahmad Shah encountering trouble securing coolies at Sakden.

month. The Rhododendron Society's Rhododendron book says "Capsule unknown", but K.W. has collected seed before now. However I have taken two specimens (each duplicate) of the capsules.

15th November. Mera. 13000'(?) 10m(?). Rained a good deal in the night, was cloudy all day. I left at 7.0 before coolies had turned up.
Collected a few rhododendrons on the way up to the Nyuhsang La (R. cauliferum 2861, 2862; R. campanulatum 2860; R. sp. 2859; R. tsariense 2858; R. micromeres 2857; R. sp. 2856 & 2855). Also another specimen of 1173 P. boothii from about 13500'. Genl.
Anemone was still in flower, but no ripe seeds were seen. There was a fair amount of old snow in patches on the Nyuhsang La, on the path on the Mera side. Puntso Dzongpen came with me, the kit being sent down direct to Rungzyung. We got in at 3.0 pm. Fine all the way, but thick mist from 13000' on the pass. Puntso cooked my dinner — Oxo & curry, perfectly well, & stayed in the Dzongpen's house there.

16th November. Rungzyung 14 m.? 4500? Left at 6.30, in at 2.30 pm, over the Choling La (Whitei 2864 on Choling La). Fine all day, but cloudy & some rain & snow on the hills, no news. Collected specimens of 1166 & 1167 again (P. whitei & P. paucispinosa), both for dry specimens & to send home alive. I find Tanduk & Ahmad Shah had a great deal of trouble with coolies. None turned up at Sakden & Tanduk only got off at dusk.

Trashigang entries and plant collections, 17–19 Nov

Parte de The Ludlow & Sherriff Collection

SUMMARY:
Notes on difficult porters at Sakden, a visit from a Maharaja-affiliated veterinary doctor, and arrival at Trashigang with mail. Plant collections are recorded from Rungzyung, Samri Chu, and the Trimo sector, and local intrigues are mentioned including a Dzongpen’s servant running off to Bumthang.

CONTENT:
He had to spend the night at Tahliti, while A. Sherriff got on here by himself, which was good work. The whole of Sakden was drunk, and just refused to carry loads, worse than Tawang or Muktur. A veterinary doc. arrived in camp, one of the Maharaja's educated men. He was quite amusing and entertaining. I rather sympathise with him - as he says what is the good of all his education - he gets no pay, is not allowed to take in the Statesman and has no vet. work to do. It is rather a problem, whether to educate any of these people. I would say definitely no, unless there is plenty of work for them to do. It feels very hot indeed down here. I had a bath - much needed - on arrival. Tomorrow we look forward to getting a mail at Trashigang. From Rungzyung, Samri Chu - Primula ceresoides 2865, Luculia gratissima 2867.

17th Nov. Trashigang 8 m.? Fine but cloudy, pretty hot till we reached here where there is always a wind. Found two mail here. From Trimo sector Rh. tsariense 2894, R. wallichii 2895, Rh. baileyi 2896. Rh. arboreum 2893.

18th Nov. Halt. From Trimo sector Rh. pendulum 2898.

19th Nov. Halt. It seems that all is not too well here, and I have just been given an account of various intrigues going on. One of the Dzongpen's servants ran off to Bumthang about

SUMMARY:
Notes report court intrigue involving the Maharani Padmadechen, causing anxiety for the Dzongpen; Yusun Kazi confides concerns and asks the author to speak to Tongsa. The page also records routes and plant collections made on 20–22 November between Yonpu La, Khoma nagi, and Chungkar.

two months ago. He got hold of the Maharani (Padmadechen)
somehow and told her all sorts of lies about the Dzongpen and others.
She seems to have sent secretly to Trashigang and told all the
Dzongpen's servants to come to Bumthang - without a word to
the Dzongpen himself. I am told the Maharaja does not
believe all the stories, but the Dzongpen is obviously frightened
that he may be persuaded to. Yusun Kazi told me all this
secretly and asked me to speak to Tongsa about it. Yusun too is
not happy about his post: although promoted to (Betung?)
he finds there is a lot of intrigue there, again caused by the
Maharani, and he feels his position insecure. However he says
he does not mind that, but is worried about the Dzongpen.

20th Nov. Yonpu La 7000? 10 miles. Fine, hot below, but cold
on the pass, which was in the clouds. Collected bulbs of Lil.
Anemone gigantea. from Chuka, Rong Chu: seeds of P. eburnea 2899, P. bellidifolia 2901.
P. lillidale 2902. Meconopsis bella 2905

21st Nov. Khoma nagi. 4000? 13 miles. Fine but not too hot.
Coelogyne porrecta 2892. Eria coronaria 2893. Wightia speciosissima 2894.
Got two orchids and a fine tree in bloom; also bulbs of Lil.
Wallichii on the way down from the pass. Saw no birds, but
a few butterflies.

22nd November. Chungkar 6500? 10m. Fine. Every day is much the

Satsalor and Diwangiri: seed collecting and mail to Ludlow

SUMMARY:
Clear weather continues as seed collecting efforts focus on Primula species near Satsalor, with locals bringing unripe seed and successful finds of P. sherriffae and P. ludlowi on cliffs. The diarist notes the handover of previously ‘lost’ mail to Ludlow and plans to remain at Diwangiri until the 27th before proceeding to Rangiya.

CONTENT:
Same now. The nights are clear, starry, the mornings hot and sunny with clouds gradually gathering till the evening. Nothing of interest seen. I had a man here to collect seeds of Primula filipes, which he did. But as always happens, he collected them all when green. He had a good bunch, but I threw them away. They always say they know all about taking dry ripe seed, yet I don't think any local has yet collected ripe seed for me. Tomorrow we see the last glimpse of the snows on leaving here. This is where the 'lost' mail was handed over to Ludlow. All I can hear so far is that a boy handed the mail in here alright - the local mandal's story is that it just lay here till Ludlow arrived when he said he had this bag, did L want it now or not.

23rd November. Satsalor. Fine, same as before. We searched the cliff pretty thoroughly for seed of P. Sherriffae and Ludlowi and got a good deal. P. filipes is just coming into flower and no seed was to be found. Only saw one bird just near Satsalor. A good deal of transport, all coming up from the mela.

at Diwangiri until 27th November for Rangiya.
