SUMMARY:
At Lung the diarist halted, collected several ripe rhododendron seeds (including R. lindleyi, R. edgeworthii, R. kendrickii, R. sherruffii, R. fulvum, and R. arizelum), and noted ticks, frost, bamboo and pines, and a river running north then east in a narrow, steep valley, with no signs of tragopan. They went further up the hill and spoke with the Trün gyimpu.

bush, with ripe capsules. As the capsules are so much longer I have collected it under a new number 2744 - seeds are perfectly ripe. A few other odd things also collected, including one rhododendron, which we did not see in flower in July, with very thick tomentum, & capsules covered with the same tomentum (2745).

Ticks pretty bad, as there is a good deal of bamboo on the path. The trees are mostly rhododendron, bamboo, deciduous of various kinds & a good many pines. The river flows nearly North for a bit then turns E again; the path is always steep & the valley is very narrow & steep sided. The left bank of the river is mostly covered with pines down below.

Lung
23rd October. Halt. Fine down here all day, with some snow on the hills for an hour or two. Went up the hill again, further than I had been before, but saw no sign or marks of tragopan.

Rhododendrons disappointing, but I got two which are ripe, & have taken a few more which may come to something. Ticks again pretty bad. There has been quite a hard frost down here the last two mornings, especially this morning.

Lung
24th October. Halt. Some rain last night & this morning. Mostly fine but clouded over. Talking to the Trün gyimpu today, he

SUMMARY:
Notes observations of monal and a Lopa offering to guide the party to tragopan above the Lung houses. Describes discovering a good path from Lung to the Chupung La, used year-round when the Kashong La is closed, passing many Lopas returning home, and moving through pine, birch, and rhododendron forests where a partridge was shot.

told me he had seen what a good many monal, about then
have the crest - spatulate feathers not curly. He shoots south
of the range S of Kap. A Lopa turned up today who says
he will show us where tragopan are. I think the gyimpu
does not expect much, but we will see tomorrow. He says
they are above Lung houses, but how far up I don't know.

25th October. Lung Halt. It takes a long time to find out about
almost anything here. Only today, my last day, did I find
that there is a good path leading to the Chupung La. It leaves
from 50' below the Lung houses, climbs very steeply. Lopas from
Lung halt this side of the pass first day, then over the second.
It must be low, as the gyimpu says people can go over it all the
year round, and it is regularly used when the Kashong La is
closed. That I know is true, as we passed 15 Lopas today going
back to their own country. The path takes one to most
interesting country. First through open pine forest with a lot
of bracken, where I shot a partridge, the first seen up this way.
Then through a fine forest of birch and rhododendron, very steeply
at first, then level along to the left into a valley. Beyond that
I did not go. But where the path enters this forest, we saw a

SUMMARY:
The diarist reflects on missing the Slumpung La route earlier and suggests it would have yielded better collections than the Kashong La, noting rhododendron comparisons and that the pass he called Chang La is properly Kiang La. On 26 October at Natrampa, he and Tsongpen revisited a tragopan site, found fresh scratchings (likely T. ocellata), but saw no birds, noting others had been there first.

tragopan. I was too late to get a shot at first, and then ran uphill after it, but never saw it again. However there were many fresh marks - today's - of tragopan at the edge of the forest, but we saw none. On the way down I shot a coal tit from a party of mixed tits feeding, and moving very quickly among pine trees. I only wish that I had known of the Slumpung La and the route there when we first came to Mijitun. Had I known, I'm sure I would have found very good stuff in June on the La and to the south of it. It would undoubtedly have produced more stuff and more interesting stuff than the Kashong La. Rhododendrons there might have been like the Lo La ones. It can't be helped now though. I am told that the pass beyond the Kashong La, which I have called the Chang La, should be the Kiang La, Kiang meaning cold or a cold place, - well named.

26th October. Natrampa. 7 am. Tsongpen and I went up again to the tragopan place early this morning, but we saw and heard nothing. There were fresh scratchings, but I think these may have been made by T. ocellata, which was pretty numerous there. More Lopas had been up before us, and were camped a little

SUMMARY:
Field notes from Nathampa and Trün describe rhododendron seed collecting, generally fine weather with some rain and evening snow up the Karutra valley, and a lost woodpecker after a shot. Ticks are noted as troublesome, and Tsongpen suffers from fever, possibly due to the cold valley wind.

further up, and they may have frightened off any tragopan there may have been. Nothing of interest seen on the way up. Rhododendrons at the nala 1 m below camp are by no means ripe, and I fear they won't come on, although I have taken twigs and marked the ends. Fine till the afternoon when a little rain. Clouded most of the day over on the hills.

Nathampa
27th October. Halt. - A perfect day: in the evening some snow up the Karutra valley. Tsongpen and I went up the Rhododendron valley, and did pretty well. We got seeds of 8 or 9 rhododendrons, mostly fully ripe. It is odd how much earlier they are here than at Lung, presumably because it is wetter at Lung. I shot a woodpecker, but it fell down into a hole among rocks, which led down further than we could see, and we had to give it up. No sign of blood pheasant or of tragopan. On the whole one of the better days. Ticks a nuisance. They are very common now at Lung and here, mostly in the bamboo jungle.

28th October. Trün. 8m? Fine all day, but rain on the hills, and clouded over most of the day. Tsongpen has fever today, caused I suppose by the cold wind there is always blowing up the valley all day. He thinks it is tick fever, but I don't think they have

SUMMARY:
The diary records a halt with fine weather, Tsonpen’s recovery, collecting G. Waltoni seeds, paying off coolies, and concern about snow on the Drichung La and Le La while planning to reach Chayul to meet Tenduk and Danang. The next day brought strong winds, continued seed searches including Ceratostigma, and frustration that many seeds (Primula, Meconopsis, Rhododendron) were eaten by bugs.

...been bad enough for that. We got a pretty good collection of ripe seeds of Gent. Waltoni, but otherwise nothing.

29th October. Halt. Fine all day, but clouded in the morning: much new snow near the Kashong La. Tsonpen is much better today, & should be fit by the morning. Collected two more packets of G. Waltoni. Paid off all coolies at the rate of 3 shao a day. I am now anxious to get to Chayul, & meet Tenduk & Danang & hear how they have got on. There is a lot of snow up the Drichung La range, & I hope there has not been too much on the Le La. The gyunpo says the Drichung La is never closed, but sometimes after snow, they cannot cross it for a few days.

30th October. Kap. 8m. A beautiful morning till 11.0, then clouded over snow on the hills all round. A very strong cold wind blowing up the valley. Got a few more G. Waltoni seed, searched for Ceratostigma seed. But we could only find four seeds. Every bush has been attacked by some bug & all seeds eaten, most annoying. I wonder if this year is specially bad that way, because nearly all seeds have been eaten, Primula, Meconopsis & worst of all, Rhododendron.
