SUMMARY:
Notes the junction of the Yombu Chu and Mena Chu, with a ruined customs house called Karmi under a cliff and good camping nearby. Describes clear views and snow peaks around the Cho La, map doubts, and Meconopsis observed, then records the stage to Shingbe with elevation and temperature.

At mile 8, where the Yombu Chu comes in from the west, it joins the Mena Chu. About 300' above the junction is a ruined tower and wall under an overhanging cliff on the left bank of the Yombu Chu. This was an old customs house, and is known as Karmi. Camp can be pitched ½ mile up the Yombu Chu on the left bank. Water, fuel and grazing all good.

A lovely day, or rather a tantalising one. It was clear on the Cho La and we had glimpses of a series of snow peaks all round from the South to the West, but never saw the top of the finest, which lies west of the Cho La. The Mena Chu valley is magnificent, thickly wooded on the East side and grassy to the west. Looking back to the Cho La was a grand sight, with the saw-edge ridge with the pass against the sky. I took many bearings from the Cho La, which often merely confused us more and more. The map must be miles out, and I think someone's longitude must be wrong somewhere. On the pass were the Meconopsis horridula, and a few other interesting flowers collected before, but little new of interest. At Karmi were Meconopsis grandis in seed.

22nd August. SHINGBE. 12 miles. Ht. 12756' (BP. 189.3°).
Temp 48°. Path leads up left bank of Yombu.

SUMMARY:
After the flowering season, the party spent three months collecting birds and seeds, moving slowly through the Trashiyangsi valley, revisiting Sakden, and exiting via Dewangiri on 15 Nov. Around 750 skins were obtained, with emphasis on Troglodytidae and other notable species, including range extensions from the East Bhutan frontier and large flocks of grosbeaks at Dewangiri. Notes include a reference to a description of the Yongbon Chu valley and remarks on the Dongkar–Cho La–Me La route used by Bhutanese coolies from the Tawang area.

The height of the flowering season was now passed and during the ensuing 3 months we devoted all our time to the collecting of birds and seeds. We moved very slowly, making prolonged halts at various places in the Trashiyangsi valley and again visited Sakden. We finally made our exit via Dewangiri on 15 Nov.

Nearly 750 skins were obtained during these last 3 months. We paid particular attention to the Troglodytidae and secured large and carefully sexed series of

SUMMARY:
Route notes describe travel up the valley past summer yakherd huts and a side valley with the glacier called SESUM, crossing the main river and a steep ascent to the Me La (Ht. 14956) before descending through conifers to Shingbe. Mentions an old landslide with a boulder bearing two houses, possible fording difficulties, and bearings to the Yombu Chu–Mena Chu junction and continuation of Yombu Chu.

Chu, first through forest, then through scrub, passing several summer-occupied huts of yakherds. At m 2 a valley enters from the north, where there is a large glacier called SESUM. Route continues easy to SH, at m 5 1/2, where another valley enters from almost due north. This river is of some size in summer as glacier fed. Some difficulty may be had in fording on a sunny day. There is a small foot bridge. Just before meeting the side valley, the main valley is partially blocked by an old landslide, beside the path is a huge boulder with two houses built on it, a stair of stones built up to them. At m 7 the main river is forded to the R. bank, again there may be difficulty here. Just after fording the path climbs very steeply indeed to the Me La, up the R bank of the Yombu Chu. (Ht. of Me La 14956 BP. 185.8 Temp 64°). Descent on the Bhutan side easy at first, then steeper through conifers to Shingbe, a clearing in the jungle at m 12. There are three wooden huts here & usually some yakherds in summer. Bearing back to Yombu Chu - Mena Chu junction from m 7 = 288°. Bearing of continuation of Yombu Chu from same place 77°.

SUMMARY:
A rainy, disappointing day with no views as yak men delayed and refused to go as far as Shingbe. The writer praises the valley between the Cho and the La for its floral richness, regrets not spending more time between there and Dongkar, and reports that by the 20th July none of their mail had reached Kumari Khata, including a post sent from Trashigang by the Dzongpen, possibly misrouted via Nerli. On 23rd August at Shingbe they halted to check and pack flowers and write letters for dispatch.

A most disappointing day. It rained steadily the whole day, we never had a view of the hills & glaciers at all. The yak men did not want to go as far as Shingbe & made a late start. The valley between the Cho & the La is one of the best we've seen anywhere. I believe had we spent all our time between here & Dongkar we would have got nearly every flower we have collected in all our wanderings. A few of the Sakden ones might not have been found, but there would have been others of the earlier flowers to make up for that. But it can't be helped now. Last night I made the rather unpleasant discovery that by the 20th July none of our mail sent off by us had ever reached Kumari Khata at all. As that includes a post from Trashigang when it was personally sent by the Dzongpen, it is rather unpleasant. What can have happened I do not know. He must have sent it to Nerli, but from there it has not been sent either.

23rd August. Halt Shingbe. Spent the day checking & packing up flowers & writing letters for a mail to be sent off tomorrow on the

Pintso went to Tiyangsi to hire coolies to trace lost mail that had earlier come via Dirang, Mago, Atsona, and Dongkar. On the Maharaja’s orders, a Dzongpen sent four boxes of jackfruit that arrived inedible after a long journey amid heavy rain; Kuntip’s stomach trouble returned, and the party halted at Shingbe, with Danang noted.

The Maharaja had kindly given orders to one of his Dzongpens to send the Sahibs some fruit. So he obeyed, and sent off on a 20-day journey four huge boxes of jack fruits. The jack fruit is a disgusting fruit at the best of times. It looks (and smells) like a sheep's stomach. After a month's knocking about it is quite definitely not fit to eat. We were hoping the box would contain vegetables, so our disappointment can be imagined when this mass of mush was opened up. It rained hard all day. Our washing was optimistically hung out to dry in the morning, and remains out tonight wetter than when hung up. Kuntip in the morning was his old self again, but suddenly developed his tummy ache again. I'm afraid his inside is seriously out of order.

SUMMARY:
Early morning ascent to Me La; mist arrived by 9 and steady rain began at 10. A delicate primula (No. 878) was found about 150 ft SW of the pass, with notes on Gentiana divaricata (879), G. infelix (880), Aconitum spicatum (884), aff. luridum (881), widespread Rheum nobile (883), Primula roylei in seed, P. congestifolia near over, and compass bearings taken from the La to m 5 and to Shingbe.

Me La Aug. 24.
Went up to the Me La in the early morning. It looked as if it might be a fine day when we left, but by 9.0 the mist was coming up and at 10 rain started. It rained the rest of the day. We found a new primula about 150 ft SW of the La.

Prim. soldanelloides (No 878). It was growing on rock ledges in wet moss. It is a pretty little thing, rather delicate looking. I call it a primula, though it is unlike others in having a rather irregular flower, the lower petals being longer than the upper. But as far as we could make out, it is a primula, and if so will almost certainly be an interesting one, if not quite new. There was nothing else of much interest.

Gentiana divaricata 879
Gentiana infelix 880

Rheum nobile 883
Aconitum spicatum 884
" aff luridum 881

Rheum nobile was growing all over the hillside, being very obvious against the dark green vegetation.

Prim roylei
Prim. roylei is in seed, and will bag some tomorrow. P. congestifolia is also near the top, the flower just about over. I took some compass bearings from the La: to m 5 (first crossing) on our last day's march - 60° : to Shingbe, approximately 255
