SUMMARY:
The party halted near Migyitun, explored east up the valley to the Tsokar lake via the Nga La and Pang La, and collected game while noting Primula species abundant around 13,000 ft amid continuous rain. A mix-up over a horse with the headman occurred earlier, and on a subsequent rainy halt day they stayed in to pack and finally received a long-awaited mail.

CONTENT:
Primula, with very hairy leaves, was seen, but it is not yet out; it will be a full week or more before the first are in bloom. I thought a horse had been ordered for me, and was rather peeved with the headman when it did not turn up. So I made him carry my camera and come with me. But it appeared afterwards that he never got the order for a horse.

31st May. Halt. Went up all together up the valley E of Migyitun, then up the road to the Tsokar lake, over the Nga La and Pang La. I shot two Lerwa and a snow cock, Ludlow 3 Lerwas. The snow cock seems to be a new species altogether, much smaller than the usual one. Saw no new flowers, but P. glabra and the purple Roylei — a beauty — were everywhere at about 13,000 ft. Rained all day.

1st June. Halt. Rained all day. None of us went out and spent the day in packing up and rearranging loads. Our mail arrived at last, and was a good fat one. What a joy it is to get the mail after just on two months. It is really worth waiting for. I suppose it was not really

SUMMARY:
Mentions receiving mail at Tsona and newspapers for pressing flowers. On 2nd June they camped 3 miles up the Bimbi La route from Podzo Sumdo in the Tsari valley, describing a steep path through rhododendron, bamboo, and evergreen forest. On 3rd June they went up toward the Bimbi La, noting a tiny berberis (specimen 1763) and a pretty androsace covering the hillside, before heavy rain set in.

held up much, though our man found it waiting for him
at Tsona. From now on we should not do so badly. I
got four mail letters from home dated 20th April which is very
good. We had 36 newspapers which are badly wanted for
pressing flowers in.

2nd June Camp 3 m up Bimbi La route from Podzo Sumdo. 9 miles.
B.P. 190.0 Temp. 54 Time 2.30pm Ht. 12441'. Up the main Tsari
valley to Podzo Sumdo at m 6, then turn up the side valley to
the NE. The path here is quite good & the ascent through
rhododendron, bamboo & evergreen forest pretty steep. Good
camping ground 3 miles up in an open space, with fir
rhododendron close by.

3rd June. Halt. Fine till 1.0pm, then heavy rain all day.
Went up to the Bimbi La, on a good path, never very
steep, the whole way. It leads through dense rhododendron
for 2000 ft or so, then on to bare open hillside. Here
I found a very small berberis 1763, growing only a
foot or so high. Also a very pretty androsace which
covered the hillside for 100 yards or more. We went
right up close to the pass, & then turned R. up a

SUMMARY:
Notes describe S. and T. climbing toward Bimbi La via a good track through rhododendron forest to an alpine meadow and rocky, snowy ground. Plant collections at Bimbi La are listed for June 4 and June 5, including several Rhododendron, Primula, Iris, Anemone, and Vaccinium specimens with numbers.

CONTENT:
L. p. 108. S. & T. climbed to the Bimbi La - almost. The track, which was a good one, led to the junction of two valleys and on the level. Then proceeded to ascend quickly by means of easy zig-zags through rhododendron forest for 1000 feet. We then got to an alpine meadow and another 1000 feet brought us to rocks, boulders, and a little snow.

SUMMARY:
Notes record primulas found near a rocky nala and two Blood Pheasants shot at high elevations. During two halt days, letters were written and mail sent; the mail runner was dismissed and replaced by a 'tapion'. Dawong and Tsompen collected new primulas west of the Bimbi La while the author surveyed the hillside near camp.

rocky nala, which the path crosses. Here we found three (P. caveana 1768, P. macrocarpa 1769) primulas. Two in flower, both I think new 1768 and 1769. The first is certainly new to us, and a beauty with a very fine scent. I think it must be near to P. rotundifolia, with its colour and scent. The third was not collected as it was not yet in flower, and very little was seen. Shot two Blood pheasant, Kuseri, one at about 14500 and the other close to camp at 12500.

4th June. Halt. Stayed in camp, wrote letters all day long, a very tiring thing to do. Packed up mail and sent it off, or rather gave it to go next morning.

5th June. Halt. Dismissed our mail runner for general inefficiency and grousing, and sent off the 'tapion' in his place. He will get Rs 13 a month and has been paid everything up to date. He is a thoroughly good lad. Dawong and Tsompen went up the valley to the W of the Bimbi La and brought back a new primula (P. macrophylla macrocarpa), lilac and very pretty, No 1778. Also a yellow one 1780 (P. jucunda var ponticola). I went up the hillside below camp to the E. Saw masses of Roylei, macrophylla, glabra and atrodentata.

SUMMARY:
Entries describe halt days with valley explorations near a waterfall, noting Meconopsis bella not yet open, an iris with a very long tube, and abundant primulas. A hypsometer reading was taken at Bimbi La amid snow and rain, followed by a fine day in camp.

6th June. Halt. Went up the valley, then turned right leaving the big waterfall on the left. There were three little nalas up there, with rocky sides, over there are a good many flowers. Meconopsis bella is there but not quite open yet. It should be open in a week or so. Danuong went down the valley, then up the left bank to the cliffs, which are about 1 mile or so below here. He found a very pretty little iris with an exceedingly long tube - tube about 4" or even more long. (1781). Iris kemaonensis. 1783, a bright pink purple primula (P. yargongensis) was also seen in numbers. Rain all day.

7th June. Halt. Took hypsometer reading of Bimbi La. BP. 184.2° Temp. 42°. Time 9.0 am. Ht approx 15492 ft. It looked as if it would be fine & was so till I reached the Pass, when it began to snow. From then on it was snow or rain with some sun till the evening when it really cleared up. Nothing new seen, but a form of Sikkimensis primula (1791) perhaps waltonii, or just a form. (P. vicosa). I stayed up wandering about for some time, getting back at 3.0 pm.

8th Halt. A perfect day, not a cloud all morning, & fine & sunny with clouds in the afternoon. Stayed in camp,

SUMMARY:
Notes describe separating from Sherriff at Tsari, with the main camp at Lung in the Chayal Valley while Lumsden and the author travel via Bimbi La into the Tsangpo drainage toward Pachakshiri. Bird observations include Chinese Parakeets at Kyimdong Dzong and a Three-toed Woodpecker on the northern slopes of the Lo La, and plant collections are listed for Migyitun on June 10–11.

Sketch. Lumsden Route

Ludlow Ibis 47. Tsari was a paradise for flowers but the ban on shooting was an insurmountable obstacle to ornithological work, so we decided to separate. Sherriff remained behind to work the Tsari valley. The main camp in the Chayal Valley at Lung, whilst Lumsden & I set out for Pachakshiri.
(NB. Separation on June 12th)
The crossing of the Bimbi La brought us for the first time within the drainage of the Tsangpo. At Kyimdong Dzong (June 15) we found the Chinese Parakeet (Psittacula derbyana) in large flocks in the barley fields. From here we crossed the Lang La (15,500) to Molo, where we turned south into the Pachakshiri district. Crossing the Himalayan range by the Lo La (13,300) on the northern slopes of the Lo La (June 27) we obtained a Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus funebris) in Silver-fir forest and is characteristic of the forests of SW. China.

SUMMARY:
Stores were divided as Ludlow and Sherriff prepared to leave for Kyindong Dzong or Chutchar; Tendu was injured catching butterflies but remained cheerful. The party made a halt-day excursion to the Bimbi La with fine views but few new plants, and later the writer found a primula in bloom near camp, hoped to be P. cawdoriana. Departure was planned for the 12th amid variable weather.

except to take some photos in the morning. The rest of the day spent in dividing stores once more, as Ludlow & Sherriff go off in three days to Kyindong Dzong or to Chutchar. Poor Tendu fell catching butterflies & cut his knee badly, having to have a stitch in it. He seems happy as usual though. We sent a man down today to call up the coolies, & plan to leave on the 12th.

9th June. Halt. A perfect day till 2.0 pm when there was heavy rain for a while, clearing up later. We all went to the Bimbi La & returned about 4.30 pm. Had fine views of snow hills but for little of interest in the flower line, the only new flower being a myosotis.

10th June. Halt. Another fine day, spent a good deal in looking pretty close to camp, where nothing much was seen.

11th June. Halt. Fine most of the day. Went up to the E. of camp, & at last found some specimens of a primula I have been watching for ages, in bloom. Only two seen fully out. The calyx is large, the leaves small, & one expects a very small flower. But it is really a beauty & the colour very pretty (2113). I hope it proves to be P. Cawdoriana.
