SUMMARY:
The diarist records plant collections and observations, noting poor weather but good flowers, and a promising valley toward the Chachu La with yak shelters and a large lake. While halted in camp, they receive mail from Betty via Wangmo’s servant to Bumthang and send replies; they also collect the first seeds of the year. On 3rd July they make a long day trip to Tolegang, pressing 18 specimens including Primula waddellii.

CONTENT:
1st July: Saxifraga brunoniana 19270.
Rhod. calderianum 19277.
Streptopus simplex 19280.
Cardiocrinum giganteum 19284.

...for a few nice things, the best being what I think is a Buddleia, but if so, it's a much bigger flower than B. colvilei (19272) which it somewhat resembles. Lil. giganteum is also common down the valley, and Briggsia (B. muscicola 19266), on a tree, is rather nice. A miserable day for weather, but a good day for flowers.

2nd July. Halt. In camp, and fine in the morning after a night of very heavy rain indeed. From what I saw of the valley towards the Chachu La, it is good. But one would have to spend a night or two up there. There are two yak herds' shelters, one at 13500, and one above 14500 just near the biggest lake I have seen in Bhutan. That would be a good place. There are magnificent cliffs all around, and I did get two nice saxs from the only cliffs I visited. But primulas, other than calderiana and umbratilis were scarce. P. umbratilis is common at 14500 and rather paler. I saw one white one, and hope it may mean that real white ones are close. If we can't get good places in Haubung, we must return there. A mail from Betty came in on 30th night, very surprisingly, sent by Wangmo's servant to Bumthang. So I have written letters to Betty and Wangmo, to go off today if possible — or at any rate tomorrow. We collected the first of this year's seed — P. atrodentata. This is always the first to seed, and unless one takes it soon, it is likely to be eaten by yaks.

3rd July. Halt. Went to Tolegang, and had a day with hardly any rain, but a long one. Left at 6.0 am and back at 5.0 pm rather tired, but with 18 flowers (19330) in the press, some good ones amongst them, including Primula waddellii, which I had forgotten was so very pink and different in colour from P. tenuiloba. There can be no mistaking the two. After reaching the lake, we turned up right...

SUMMARY:
Notes on the death of the Thimbu penlop and Tobgye’s sending of English medicine, causing concern with the Maharaja. On 30th June Ludlow and the author travelled to Lomi-Tsa-wa via Do Kyong La in clearing weather, collecting flowers including Magnolia globosa and observing that vegetation in the Trashi-cho-dzong valley and at the pass resembled Sikkim.

Thimbu penlop. He died of dropsy & a short while ago his
relations asked Tobgye for English medicine. Against his own
lamas advice, Tobgye sent some, but with strict instructions
that the lamas should first of all decide in their usual way
whether it would do good or not. After taking one of the two
medicines, the man felt weaker, & the whole thing was
immediately reported to the Maharaja, who is said to have been
angry with Tobgye. They said nothing of the fact that the
other medicine did a lot of good. I can't believe that the
Maharaja will put any blame down to Tobgye in the end.

30th June. TO LOMI-TSA-WA. 12 miles - 6700' (An. Ht. 7700'). Ludlow & I
Embelia oleracea 182
Anemone rivularis 183 were at last able to go on our own & were allowed to shoot
Rhod. Keysii 184
Symplocos ramosissima 186 as soon as we reached the DO KYONG LA, 10410'. So we
Pedicularis megalantha 187
left at 5.30 am, although it was raining pretty hard. By
Meconopsis villosa 189
Rhod. camelliaeflorum 190 7.30 however it cleared up & remained fine till 5.0 pm. On
Berberis celestina 191
the way up & at the top we found a number of flowers,
Mag. globosa 192
Pyrola rotundifolia 193 including the magnificent Magnolia Globosa in full bloom at
Streptopus simplex 194
10000'. We also got a strange rhododendron which Dawang
Geranium pratense 198
Didissandra lanuginosa 199 has never seen before. In the Trashi-cho-dzong valley
the vegetation is quite different to what we had seen before:
trees were quite scarce, & what there were, were mostly
small. The forest again became thick, but at the pass the
vegetation was much more like Sikkim - no pines or firs, a
good deal of bamboo undergrowth & numbers of rhododendrons.

SUMMARY:
Notes describe separating from Sherriff at Tsari, with the main camp at Lung in the Chayal Valley while Lumsden and the author travel via Bimbi La into the Tsangpo drainage toward Pachakshiri. Bird observations include Chinese Parakeets at Kyimdong Dzong and a Three-toed Woodpecker on the northern slopes of the Lo La, and plant collections are listed for Migyitun on June 10–11.

Sketch. Lumsden Route

Ludlow Ibis 47. Tsari was a paradise for flowers but the ban on shooting was an insurmountable obstacle to ornithological work, so we decided to separate. Sherriff remained behind to work the Tsari valley. The main camp in the Chayal Valley at Lung, whilst Lumsden & I set out for Pachakshiri.
(NB. Separation on June 12th)
The crossing of the Bimbi La brought us for the first time within the drainage of the Tsangpo. At Kyimdong Dzong (June 15) we found the Chinese Parakeet (Psittacula derbyana) in large flocks in the barley fields. From here we crossed the Lang La (15,500) to Molo, where we turned south into the Pachakshiri district. Crossing the Himalayan range by the Lo La (13,300) on the northern slopes of the Lo La (June 27) we obtained a Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus funebris) in Silver-fir forest and is characteristic of the forests of SW. China.

SUMMARY:
The party marches in persistent rain from Samtegang to Wangdipotrang and over Hinglai La to Tsalimape, with a halt day due to wet weather. They encounter an unprepared Ritang headman, receive a protracted visit from a local Dzongpon, and have slow coolies over the pass. Few flowers are seen, but seeds of Streptopus simplex, Vaccinium, and a Cotoneaster are collected; Lilium nepalense is noted as common.

CONTENT:
We hear Raja Dorji lost 160 cattle there lately.

6th August - Samtegang. Rain at night, rain and mist most of the way here. Nothing of interest on the way, except Lilium nepalense, which is fairly common, and in unripe seed just now. We took from 5:30 to 12:45, the longest march so far. The Ritang headman was no good. He was not ready for our arrival, had no wood or supplies, and then failed to have any coolies in the morning, and did not turn up himself. Samtegang was very different, everything there was ready and well done.

7th August - Wangdipotrang. Thick mist and rain - on the one day I thought we could certainly expect to be fine. But it cleared up later and was bright for a while. The local Dzongpon came and called and he caused us some consternation by staying for an hour and a half. At last I thought he was waiting for me to tell him he could go, so I got up and induced him to get up too. Then I led him out of the room and showed him the steps down. But not a bit - he led me through two other rooms and then said "Here you are - here is the lavatory." I told him I did not want that, and then reluctantly had to lead him back to our room, where Betty was very surprised to see him again. A pleasant, polite man, but very little use, one would think.

8th August - Halt. Wet all day.

9th August - Camp Hinglai La. Off at 5:15 in heavy rain. We reached the pass at 1:00 pm, and coolies not till 4:00 pm. They were very slow. Cleared up in the evening. Little of interest seen.

10th August - Tsalimape. A little over 3 hours. No flowers except one Pyrola. But we got very good seed of Streptopus simplex, and also of Vaccinium and a Cotoneaster. Here a very pleasant camp-fire.
