SUMMARY:
The diarist ascended the Na La through forest and traversed to the Pang La while traveling toward Tso Kar, searching for flowers and birds. Notes include observations of Heteroxenicus stellatus breeding among alpine rocks and a sighting of Snow Cock Pheasant (Tetraophasis szechenyii) across a wide elevational range.

Ludlow page 104. Went up the Na La and Pang La, 2 passes Migyitun 30 August
on the road to the Tso Kar (Lake of the sacred one) which
is a place of pilgrimage. The Na La involved an ascent Primula verrucosa var. violacea
of some 3000 feet and led, as its name indicates, through forest. 1734, 1742.
On reaching the summit of the Na La I made a circuit flabellifera 1737
round to the Pang La in search of flowers and birds. macrocarpa 1743
Got 3 specimens of Heteroxenicus stellatus stellatus Paraquilegia anemonoides
Gould's Short-wing which has been found in East Nepal, 1744
Sikkim and Bhutan. This species extends its range still Meconopsis simplicifolia 1735
further eastwards. A common bird. Different from Rhododendron pumilum 1741
other Short-wings in not being a skulker. Although Caltha palustris 1745
it inhabits dense rhododendron and bamboo growth, it does not
shun observation and will ascend to the tops of bushes
to gaze at an intruder in a most confidential manner.
The 2 were shot in - wherever there are rocks and boulders in
the alpine zone, far away from all shrub growth. And
the birds were breeding amidst these surroundings.
--- shot on the next day ---
Also saw Snow Cock Pheasant Tetraophasis szechenyii - Ludlow 383
A common bird in Southeast Tibet. Found at all elevations between
11-15000 feet. Lives in fir forest and also inhabits Rhododendron scrub
in the alpine zone. - Specimen of Szechenyii 383.

SUMMARY:
Field notes from Nathampa and Trün describe rhododendron seed collecting, generally fine weather with some rain and evening snow up the Karutra valley, and a lost woodpecker after a shot. Ticks are noted as troublesome, and Tsongpen suffers from fever, possibly due to the cold valley wind.

further up, and they may have frightened off any tragopan there may have been. Nothing of interest seen on the way up. Rhododendrons at the nala 1 m below camp are by no means ripe, and I fear they won't come on, although I have taken twigs and marked the ends. Fine till the afternoon when a little rain. Clouded most of the day over on the hills.

27th October. Halt. - A perfect day: in the evening some snow up the Karutra valley. Tsongpen and I went up the Rhododendron valley, and did pretty well. We got seeds of 8 or 9 rhododendrons, mostly fully ripe. It is odd how much earlier they are here than at Lung, presumably because it is wetter at Lung. I shot a woodpecker, but it fell down into a hole among rocks, which led down further than we could see, and we had to give it up. No sign of blood pheasant or of tragopan. On the whole one of the better days. Ticks a nuisance. They are very common now at Lung and here, mostly in the bamboo jungle.

28th October. Trün. 8m? Fine all day, but rain on the hills, and clouded over most of the day. Tsongpen has fever today, caused I suppose by the cold wind there is always blowing up the valley all day. He thinks it is tick fever, but I don't think they have

SUMMARY:
The page lists Primula, Rhododendron, and Lilium/Nomocharis records from Lo La, Lo La Chu, Sengo Sambu, and near Molo, with a note referencing Ludlow specimen 1868 dated 26/06/1936. It records that on May 24 G. Taylor left for Lilung in the Tsangpo Valley after discovering a new race of Yunnan Greenfinch, and the party then split between the Molo area and routes toward Lilung and the Dashong La.

slender in these three primulas, but this I believe does vary in Petiolaris primulas a good deal.

  1. Primula glabra (Genestieriana?) Lo La

  2. Primula lactea (Roylei). P. lactea from this area seem remarkably large flowered. Today I noticed many very dark forms, which had no yellow eye, which I always associated with P. Roylei. Clumps of the no eye one, are fairly common, but the two never mix. Probably there are only under 5% with no eye.

  3. Rhododendron forrestii var. (repens). This has 2 flowers in almost every case (not 1 as expected) & has a loose brown indumentum on leaf upper surface, which may be rubbed off in drying. Lo La

  4. Rhododendron pumilum (Dwarf sp. 2-4"). Lo La

  5. Rhododendron calostrotum (campylogynum). SEED. Lo La near Molo

  6. Rhododendron chaetomallum var. chamaephytum (sp.). Seems to be somewhere near Rhododendron chamaephytum (repens), but has a very large leaf. As very few flowers I did not open any for examination. Sengo Sambu Lo La Chu

  7. Primula Calderiana (Roylei) var. alba. Very few seen. Sengo Sambu Lo La Chu

  8. Primula ioessa. = Ludlow 1868 of 26.6.36. These specimens are only very early ones, but they do not at all resemble P. ioessa type 2514 from Migyitun. Should they not be nearer P. vinosa? Sengo Sambu Lo La Chu

  9. Rhododendron pumilum (fraude?) Sengo Sambu Lo La Chu

  10. Rhododendron lanatum var. luciferum (sp.). Sengo Sambu, Lo La Chu

  11. Seed only of Lilium (Nomocharis) nana and/or Souliei. Both grow together here, from the capsule I can't say which is which. Lo La

No. 17a - Skin set
On May 24. G. Taylor left for Lilung in the Tsangpo Valley where he discovered a new race of the Yunnan Greenfinch.
No. 355 Hypacanthis ambiguus taylori, a form much closer to the Yunnan ambiguus than to the typical race. More & more of the avifauna of S.W. China was forcing itself on our attention.

24th May * Party separates
G.S. remains in Molo area to work the upper reaches of the Langong Chu, Thide La, Lo La, Tsari Sarma passes.
L & T go off to Lilung & down the Tsangpo work the passes in the vicinity of the Dashong La.

They thus separate for the whole of the season & the result is a bigger & more representative collection.
