SUMMARY:
The diarist records plant collections and observations, noting poor weather but good flowers, and a promising valley toward the Chachu La with yak shelters and a large lake. While halted in camp, they receive mail from Betty via Wangmo’s servant to Bumthang and send replies; they also collect the first seeds of the year. On 3rd July they make a long day trip to Tolegang, pressing 18 specimens including Primula waddellii.

...for a few nice things, the best being what I think is a Buddleia, but if so, it's a much bigger flower than B. colvilei (19272) which it somewhat resembles. Lil. giganteum is also common down the valley, and Briggsia (B. muscicola 19266), on a tree, is rather nice. A miserable day for weather, but a good day for flowers.

2nd July. Halt. In camp, and fine in the morning after a night of very heavy rain indeed. From what I saw of the valley towards the Chachu La, it is good. But one would have to spend a night or two up there. There are two yak herds' shelters, one at 13500, and one above 14500 just near the biggest lake I have seen in Bhutan. That would be a good place. There are magnificent cliffs all around, and I did get two nice saxs from the only cliffs I visited. But primulas, other than calderiana and umbratilis were scarce. P. umbratilis is common at 14500 and rather paler. I saw one white one, and hope it may mean that real white ones are close. If we can't get good places in Haubung, we must return there. A mail from Betty came in on 30th night, very surprisingly, sent by Wangmo's servant to Bumthang. So I have written letters to Betty and Wangmo, to go off today if possible — or at any rate tomorrow. We collected the first of this year's seed — P. atrodentata. This is always the first to seed, and unless one takes it soon, it is likely to be eaten by yaks.

3rd July. Halt. Went to Tolegang, and had a day with hardly any rain, but a long one. Left at 6.0 am and back at 5.0 pm rather tired, but with 18 flowers (19330) in the press, some good ones amongst them, including Primula waddellii, which I had forgotten was so very pink and different in colour from P. tenuiloba. There can be no mistaking the two. After reaching the lake, we turned up right...

SUMMARY:
The diarist describes severe wind and snow near a pass, continued mixed weather, and seed collecting of Primula, Gentiana stictantha, Meconopsis bella, and Diplarche multiflora. Coolies were to return to Karutra, about 50 Crossoptilon were seen, and Tsongpen suffered from snow blindness.

CONTENT:
on the South side, while on the N. it was bright sun, though the
snow was blown a good distance beyond the pass, by a very strong
wind. The primula rotundifolia seeds are not yet ripe, we could
find no P. tenuiloba. But I got some good seed of P. nivalis sp., and
several other things of less importance. The marks we left for
Gent. stictantha were covered with snow, but I found a few
ripe seeds. Many have been eaten by insects. Coolies returned
to Karutra, are to come on the sixth day. On the way
up above Karutra, I came across about 50 Crossoptilon,
but did not shoot any.

Near Kashong La
10th October. Halt. Yesterday afternoon and evening were beastly.
A howling gale was blowing, and it snowed steadily all evening
and a good deal of the night. The wind dropped about 8:00 pm.
Tsongpen had bad snow blindness, and has had it all today
too. Today was lovely after about 8:00 am till 1:00 pm.
Then the rain came on and later on snow, but the wind
has not been nearly so strong, and only in gusts. I found
a few more seeds of G. stictantha, some Mec. bella and
a little yellow primula, besides a heath (Diplarche multiflora) which we
collected above Mignitum. This heath, 1713, turns a lovely

SUMMARY:
Notes from fir forest observations and collecting, including comparison of a Primula resembling tsariensis, signs of shao, and an encounter with blood pheasants with chicks. At Tomtsang the day was misty with heavy rain; the route to the pass is steep and direct, with abundant Primula species observed but little new.

In fir forest is yet another primula which I thought was tsariensis 2194. It looks much the same, but it has a much longer scape & bigger though similar leaves. I left it at first, but as I have never seen 2195 in fir forest before, took it under 2196. Down here there are a good many signs of shao in the forest. I came across again a pair of blood pheasant, with chicks, one of which I caught, but I could not induce either parent to come nearer than 10 yards or so, so did not take a photo. Fine all day, but cloudy, & rather misty in the afternoon.

23rd June. Tomtsang. 8 m. 12600'. A foul day. Thick mist & heavy rain all day long. And we saw very little. Plenty of Prim. macrophylla, P. tenuiloba, dryadifolia, glabra, the bright one tsariensis 2195, & the yellow jucunda 2175, but little of interest as new. The road to the pass just goes straight up the side of the hill - I have never seen more direct route. Similarly it is pretty straight down this side for the first 500 ft, then eases off & finally very steep indeed down through the jungle. Here I had hoped to find more, but there is really
