SUMMARY:
Notes abundant Primula species on hillsides and highlights several Pedicularis specimens from a nala above camp. Observes eremophila with young and shoots two snowcock, then walks to the Le La and into another valley, noting Gentiana amoena forma pallida on shale scree near the pass, not yet in flower.

Primulas indeed all over the hillsides, but no others bar P. tsariensis, pygmaeorum, roylei & macrophylla, with a few late flowering atrodentata & masses of sikkimensis.

The nicest flower we saw was a Pedicularis 2293 (Pedic. bella v. holophylla 2293), from the nala just 1 m above camp. Another Pedicularis 2290 (Pedic. megalocheila 2290) is also very pretty (Pedic. zephanantha 2295). Saw masses of eremophila with their young about 400' above camp. They appear to have either 2 or 3 chicks. Shot two snowcock pretty high up. There were many young birds with them, able to fly.

5th July. Halt. Le La. Fine most of the morning & part of the afternoon. Went up to the Le La direct, then turned left into another valley, so circled home. On the pass there is now no snow either side. Gentiana amoena forma pallida is fairly common just near the top in pure shale scree. I also saw it further to the left on a ridge further south. Route description from Langong to Molo via the Tse La, following the Langong Chu through forests and meadows with a steep ascent to a camp at Yamto; transport suitable for yaks. From LANGONG to MOLO via the TSE LA. Follow down the L bank of the Langong Chu to m 2, where a large valley comes in from 350° M. This is followed up through forest to m 4, where the valley opens out a little & a series of grassy wet meadows is met. At m 5, the main valley comes from the N. West, this is left, & a small, narrow & steep valley is followed up to the North. The ascent to m 6 is very steep through rhododendrons & the path difficult for any transport but yaks. At m 6 a small meadow is reached, this forms a suitable camping ground. Rhododendron fuel available. (BP. 186.4. T. 50° 3.30pm. 21.6.38). This camp is called YAMTO.

5635. Primula hyacinthina. Does not always have farina on back of the leaves. One specimen has none.

From camp the ascent is very steep over scree to the Tse La at a bearing of 35

5952. Primula dryadifolia. Collected because of the 2-flowered scapes which have the flowers clear of the leaves, which are very large. Is it a subspecies of P. dryadifolia?

5953. Primula sinopurpurea (nivalis sp.). Taken at first to be P. macrophylla. But several plants were seen with two whorls of flowers. Perhaps P. sinopurpurea?

5954. Primula bellidifolia. Flowers almost over. This differs from No. 5888, which has farina under the leaves; it is not P. hyacinthina.

5955. Primula kongboensis sp. No flowers seen. Perhaps Primula petrocharis?

5956. Primula muscoides v. roseotincta var. nov. The flowers were pale violet, the same as I collected in 1936 near the Kashong La under No. 2399. I have not seen the usual white form this year.

5957. Primula capitata subsp. crispata. Common, in full flower at its lower elevation.

5887 Primula Littledalei. This seems to have taken the place of 3892 (P. rotundifolia). It has much the same habitat, but does also grow out in the open on grassy ledges of the hillside. These taken from the lower altitude were in the mixed Abies rhododendron forest, which is quite unlike P. rotundifolia. They were growing just at the upper limit of P. Jaffreyana close to this. — at what I would suppose to be a very low altitude for a Rotundifolia primula.

5888. Primula hyacinthina. I don't know this form of P. bellidifolia. It has the thick farina on the back of the leaves like P. hyacinthina, but is a very small primula, much smaller than what I have seen of the latter. The usual height would be about 4"-5".

5889. Primula amabilis. I don't know this. The capsules look rather like a nivalid primula, but otherwise the plant does not. We were too late for any flowers.

5890 Primula rhodochroa. At first I thought of a dwarf kind of P. atrodentata, which it resembles in some ways. But flowers are nearly all single.

5891 Meconopsis integrifolia. Only seen growing in a very small area 50' x 50'. Flowers mostly over. There are many old scapes still standing in clumps, but the plant has old leaves at the base, just above the roots. The fresh flowers are a fine colour. Habitat is very similar to Mec. superba or Mec. Sherriffii.

6522. Primula Elizabethae. Yes. La La. From type locality (1886). The seeds are nearly all blown out. This collection represents 2 days' work! On May 15th these were under 3 ft. of snow. Seed must have been fully ripe about 15th September.

6523. Primula ? laeta? Chamaethauma. Do La. Taken from approximately the same spot as the type specimen of P. laeta. It does not appear to be either P. Roylei (calderiana), or P. tsonanensis, the only other two Petiolares I could find there. Roots taken with soil without: the winter bud wrapped in moss.
