SUMMARY:
From Ganju Tang, the writer records a long march over the Rudo La from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm, with rain and mist on the east side and dry conditions on the west. They note more rhododendrons on the east and report collecting about 21 alpine flowers, including several Primula species and Diapensia.

18th May Ganju Tang. A long march over the Rudo La taking from 5:00 am till 2:00 pm. I was lucky I had a mule which nobly carried me to the top of the pass with hardly a bit left out. We took from 5:00 till 10:00 to reach the pass, and it was through rain and mist all the way. Curiously, the mist disappeared on the west side. There had been no rain this side all day. It is obviously a much drier side, as the flora showed that. The East side is the one for Rhododendrons without a doubt. There are many more on that side. Primula elongata (18897) was not seen on the East. Primula hookeri not on the west. Altogether we got 21 flowers today, all nice. How pleasant to see alpines again after all the low muck I've seen for 2 weeks or more. Primula calderana (18890), elongata (18895), hookeri (18896) and smithiana (18900) were taken. This is followed up on the right bank the whole way to camp. The path is very rough and stony the whole way. At mile 5 the forest is left behind, and from there on is through rhododendrons, the valley gradually opening out. At camp there is an open space, where yak sheep are kept for some months. The only addition to the list of primulas today was P. capitata crispata, just in flower. There was nothing else except a specimen of elongata with three tiers of flowers, which I should think is unusual. It was very nice to see the sun again, and have a chance of getting some things dried, which they badly want. This river flows at a bearing of 165° M.

9th July Halt at Changzethang. A good deal of rain last night, and off and on all day today, but not heavy. We went up the hills of the left bank of the river, very steep and rocky, the last 750 feet over just a mass of tumbled rocks of all sizes. All the hills here have fallen in great chutes of stones and boulders, perhaps as the result of an earthquake. We did fairly well with flowers, though only taking four. The first was Primula soldanelloides 3406. Then we found a little Primula muscoides 3407. Then Primula Caveana 3408 and finally what I take to be P. bellidifolia 3409. I had taken this to be P. SUMMARY:
After heavy rain and hail, the writer explored near camp, noting Primula hopeana, saxifrages, and a Primula boothii believed to match last year’s variety from the Nyuhsangha in East Bhutan, with plans to collect it on the descent. On 7th June, a halt day brought a perfect morning followed by afternoon storms, and several Primula species were recorded, including elongata, hopeana, kingii, sapphirina, and tsariensis, along with the new variety of P. boothii.

CONTENT:
we have not seen before. Then up here, in a short time after the very heavy rain and hail was over, I went out and saw a number of good things, including Primula hopeana, some good saxifrages and other flowers. I think this place will do us well, and hope we will have good weather. The cliff to the NW looks full of possibilities. We came up a good 4000 ft today. The last coolies were in at 6.0 pm. It is now 7.15, and I have never been so late with dinner before. An interesting plant seen nearly up here is a Primula boothii. It cannot be the ordinary boothii at this height, and must be my new variety of last year, which I think was No. 1178, from the Nyuhsangha in East Bhutan. All flower is of course over, but I will collect it on the way down.

7th June. Halt. After a perfect night, it was again a perfect morning, and remained so longer than our morning has so far. Till 1.0 pm it was lovely. By 2.0 pm there was a thunderstorm, heavy hail, sleet and rain. By 4.0 pm it was over and the sun out again, and again the night is perfect. We had another good day. First of all there were Primula elongata and Primula hopeana common. Also the new variety of P. boothii, No. 3206. Then away at the top of the hills, over 15000' were P. kingii 3203 and P. sapphirina 3204. A more interesting primula was P. tsariensis No. 3205, which will cause the Professor some thought I'm sure. SUMMARY:
Notes on supplies being sent to Betty, followed by travel from Shimitang to Pangotang with excellent weather and a favorable campsite under Tsuga trees. The party observed a river gorge and collected several Primula species on the Pudo La.

CONTENT:
find it easy enough to send down for anything we want. Ngudup says
that H.H. also sent off 5 loads of food to Betty. The bears will begin to
curse us if this goes on much more. I think now we can't want
any more.

23rd May. Shimitang. 4.45 to 10.30. A perfect day with not a cloud till
we reached camp. The route too was pretty grand the whole way & was
always interesting, although we did not see much. And camp here is
the first camp that I have altogether liked. There are no more houses,
so we cannot camp near them. We are under huge Tsuga trees,
with rhodo & other shrubs around & a nice grassy sward. Ngudup
had sent on to have a place prepared. Whoever prepared it, cut
up all the nice turf, turned it, made it rough, & sprinkled over
the top juniper branches. I found my tent pitched there when I
arrived, but moved it at once. This is the first really first class
camping site we've had. I went out up the hill a good bit,
but found not a thing but ticks & a few rhodos which we
already have. The river all the way up today is in a fine
gorge, with often very imposing cliffs, & altogether it looked beautiful
with these huge Tsuga trees on either bank. Now Pasang & Nyundru
have disappeared. They are both keen to see more flowers. I hoped
for a primula today, on some of these cliffs, but we saw none
but P. denticulata & Smithiana. We are obviously still far too low.

24th May. Pangotang. 5.0 to 9.30. About 6 miles. Another lovely day, clouding up pretty
soon, but clearing again, sun nearly all day. Good also for flowers of which we got
16, including the yellow primula elongata (18946) taken on the Pudo La, & also what may be P.
Barnardiana (18946). P. Calderiana purple (18947), P. Calderiana white (18954), P. atrodentata (18957). Funny
enough, P. sikkimensis doesn't even show leaf yet on the Pudo La the flowers
