SUMMARY:
The diarist collects several flowering trees, rhododendrons, and a primula (including Nos. 2989, 2987, and 2984 P. bracteosa). Bearings are taken near the Black Mt. while marching along a steep ridge with no water, and camp is pitched on a slope in thick bamboo jungle where rainfall is estimated at 200 inches.

flowered trees, up here most of them are pink or even red. I collected one under No 2989. Then a red small rhodo, finally a very fine bright slightly purplish pink one, which shows up very well indeed. No. 2987

A few other flowers, oxalis etc., some primula, which unfortunately has lost all its flowers. It is a petiolarid, but not Boothii or Whitei (No. 2984 P. bracteosa).

A bearing from one of the peaks of the Black Mt. from very close to camp gave 335° Mag. & we have, I think, been marching roughly at 300° M. up the ridge. Path is fairly level for a short way, then very steep ascent, again becoming more level along a sharp ridge. Finally the last mile is up a very steep ascent. No water all day, none in camp, which is pitched on a slope among thick bamboo jungle. I'm glad I am not a coolie these marches. It's not much fun going as I do with only a 10-15 lb rucksack, but to carry 65 lbs or more with no water at the end of the day isn't much fun. Rainfall here must be at the least 200 inches, but we have

SUMMARY:
Field notes from Lhalung and Nyug La record observations on Rhododendron and Primula species, including diagnostic features and flowering behavior. Local river names around Lhalung are listed. Rhododendron xanthostephanum is noted as previously found by David under No. 3666.

Lhalung

  1. Rhod. edgeworthii bullatum? This seems to agree with R. bullatum, except for the pink flowers, more distinct on the lobes to base lines: 10 stamens: perhaps the size of the flower, which measured 3" across, even as in nature not pressed. It is common here, but on very high trees, & smaller at the top. A marked difference to all Edgeworthii Series is that the flowers are terminal, but only 1 flowered. X 1/5 Found a good many 2-flowered. No 3-fld.

N.B. Name of Main River at Lhalung is YARGYAP CHONG CHU, called usually, YARGYAP CHU.
" - side river passing camp is the NETSANG CHU.
" - river between Kangma La & Nyug La is CHACHURONG CHU.
" - W of Nyug La is CHUDI CHU.

  1. Rhod. xanthostephanum yellow. Found by David under NO. 3666. There mentioned as being a small shrub, but now seen to be 10-12 ft. Number label attached to tree.

Nyug La. 11th May.

  1. Primula Cortusoides Sect. lacerata = 3749. Nyug La. Specimens taken from low altitude, where flowers are nearly over. Shows the formation of bracts, in the same way as are formed on P. bracteosa. These begin when the plant is still in flower.

  2. Rhod. campylocarpum telopeum. Nyug La. Aff. R. campylocarpum. Very little of this was seen. It hardly seems to agree fully with any of the yellow flowered Thomsonii series.

  3. Rhod. micromeres. Nyug La. Flowers not yet open, but seems to agree with the description of R. micromeres. Little seen.

Note on Primula Normaniana: Flowers first seen all had the yellow eye. Now the eye varies a good deal. It seems that at first the eye is yellow, then turns either white, or very deep red.

  1. Primula Boothii gracilipes = 3671. Nyug La. This primula does not show any elongation of the scape just now. In fact the scape is hardly visible at all. The petioles have lengthened.

  2. Primula aff Bariensis porella = 3673. Nyug La. The leaves of this primula have increased a great deal in size. The color of leaves remains much the same, the upper surface being a little less red tinged. A magnificent primula common in a very limited area. Flower heads up to nine counted.

SUMMARY:
During a slippery descent, Tsongpen comments on the path, and men from Naszi report heavy rain that ruined buckwheat crops. The author measures Rhododendron leaves, notes primulas in flower, and records bearings to Naszi and Korkhu with mapping notes for Gali Chu, Okse La, Dunhar La, Bahi Chu, and the Black Mt.

slippery, though of course much easier than on our way up. In fact Tsongpen said 'Rasta pakka hogiya', which certainly was somewhat of an overstatement. Met some men from Naszi who told us they had had awful rain there which just came down solid & has ruined all the buckwheat crops. They wanted rain badly but have got it too heavy now.

I picked up a few leaves from the tree the specimen of Rhododendron (R. falconeri 2883) No. 2983 was taken. The longest, of only a few examined, was 44 cms, the broadest was 19 1/2 cms. Fine today up till 3:00 pm, but looks like rain later. We saw Naszi & Korkhu from the ridge not far from Camp 2nd May & the bearing was 95° to Naszi, 100° to Korkhu & the ridge on which we were & which is the one we crossed from the Gali Chu to Naszi by the Okse La runs at about 110° - 290° Mag. To the south of the Dunhar La is the Bahi Chu. Very roughly the map should be as opposite. It is all wrong just now. The Gali Chu stops a long way short of the Black Mt. & has the ridge running between it & the mountain. We found a few primulas 2984 (Pr. bracteosa 2991, common) in flower.

The flower is very like P. boothii, but I think it may not be that, because of the bracts & the shape of the leaf which is (Rh. keysii 2992)
