SUMMARY:
Travel from Chumpithang to Karponang and then on to Kalimpong in fine but cold weather, with extensive seed collecting including Meconopsis superba and Gentiana depressa. Transport was arranged at Rinchengang for Danang and Tseringpen; Betty was met near Gangtok before reaching Kalimpong, where coolies were paid off and a lorry arranged. Plants were later sent by air from Calcutta via BOAC.

and most of the way down here. But luckily it cleared up before we reached the pass and was a perfect day. We stopped a good long time on the passes, and collected all the Meconopsis superba seed we could, there must have been 3 or 4 lbs I should think. Beautiful views of clouds everywhere. Got in about dusk and heard that all loads had caught up now.

1st Nov. Chumpithang. Beautiful day, very cold and hard frost in the morning. Found Danang and Tseringpen in Rinchengang still waiting for transport, which we fixed up for them, and came on here. They will come one day later. A good deal of Gentiana depressa in flower still 2 miles before getting here. Stayed here in a tent, as there is now no bungalow.

2nd Nov. Karponang. Another perfect day, and cold but dead clear on the Natu, with a fine view of Chomolhari in the distance. Again in just before dusk, but with all the kit, and also got quite good seed on the way.

3rd Nov. Kalimpong. Met Betty 2 miles above Gangtok, she having started before dawn for through the whole way in the car. Her arm is of course much better, but it is rather disappointing still. Paid off all coolies, arranged a lorry for tomorrow and got home by 3:00 in very good order with plants and everything none the worse.

Later. Sent off plants by air from Calcutta by BOAC.

On 14 June Ludlow went down the Ha while the writer climbed the Paro road and shot a tragopan; preparations were made for W’s arrival. Notes for 15–19 June in Ha mention entertainments such as archery, football, and a musk deer/serow drive, with botanical collections recorded.

Report of 10. very good quality.

After dinner eight men came in and danced. They were led by a very fat man, with a most amusing face, who seems to be the leading light in all games. A lama was also made to take part, much to the old lama's amusement and delight. The music is pleasant, quite unlike Chinese or Indian music, and is such that we can understand and appreciate. It is rather mournful, a lot of it, typically hillmen's music.

14th June. Ludlow went 5 miles down the Ha, and I went 2000' up the Paro road. I returned at 2.0 pm soaked, Ludlow at 5.0 pm having had no rain. At last shot a 'pi bap' or tragopan, a most beautiful bird. Had a hectic evening trying to finish off what we could before W's arrival tomorrow. His advent will mess up our collecting horribly.
[Kyu La. Meconopsis 92 "superba" 93.]

B.10 contd.

  • 15-19th June. HA. [Ha. Lilium giganteum 119, Arisaema flavum 120.] The last few days have been rather disturbed ones, with something provided for W's amusement most of the time. One day archery; one day football, one day a drive for musk deer and serow. Ludlow and I turned up for the deer drive, as guns were wanted. Three

SUMMARY:
The diarist records a snow partridge at the top, unexpected butterflies at high elevation, and several birds including finches (as at Narim Thang), a white-necked blackbird, a grey crested tit, and a red-billed chough amid cold, windy conditions. They note Meconopsis grandis in seed, abundant gentian (no. 1169), and a probable occurrence of M. superba—previously recorded only from Kyu La—with plans to collect its seed.

results are coming as far as the map is concerned. Coming up I saw nothing much of interest, but at the top was within four yards of a snow partridge (Lerwa lerwa). Then was surprised to see butterflies out at that height. One was seen at the very top and later on I caught 3 further down. Here they are hatching out and quite common. There must be a fine sight of Meconopsis here in summer. M. grandis I saw in seed, and took some. Another with a winter stock of leaves was common, and the local says it was white. It so it must be M. superba, and that would be very interesting as it has only been recorded from the one place in the Kyu La. I am pretty sure that this is superba, and will make arrangements to collect its seed. The little gentian 1169 is everywhere now, and looks very pretty when seen massed together. The same finches as we got at Narim Thang are here in fair numbers (Propasser thura). There is still a wind here and it is beastly cold in it. I can't get out of it either. Other birds seen are the white necked blackbird, a little grey crested tit, with a white collar, light buff underneath, and the red billed chough. I heard sparrows today, but
