SUMMARY:
After heavy rain, the writer reached Damthang and rediscovered a striking blue Codonopsis near Hatö village, planning to mark plants for seed and corm collection. The next day they returned to Ha via Ha La, photographed Meconopsis habitat, and noted abundant Polygonum vacciniifolia. A remark notes that Tasho remains unmoved by commendable deeds in Bhutan.

deserves the thanks of everyone in Bhutan for what he has done. It leaves Tasho unmoved. He hardly thinks of such things at all.

16th August Damthang. We left this morning after a night of very heavy rain, at 9.30 were in Damthang at 1.30. The only interesting thing which happened on the way was the finding again of the very lovely Codonopsis which I got in 1937 under 3568. This we failed to find near Paro where originally taken, & was very worried about it. But here - just below Hatö village - we found many plants, & should have no real difficulty in getting seed & corms fit in October. I will in any case have them marked with stakes. The flower is most beautiful, a bright vivid blue, & bigger than Codonopsis vinciflora. This is shown up well by a wine red ring 1/2" diam in the centre of the flower, & a rusty brown large globular stigma. Otherwise it is just like C vinciflora. If we get this introduced, it should be a great attraction at home. The corms or tubers are like potatoes, & can be as much as 2" long.

17th August. Return to Ha via Ha La. The day started well, after heavy rain at night, & B & I got up to the Ha La by 9.30 in drizzling rain. But when we reached the place where Mec. superba grows, between the two passes, the sun came out & we had one hour quite bright again. During this I took some habitat photos of the Mec., which of course is now in unripe fruit. It was very pretty up there, as flowers are still numerous. The most beautiful is certainly Polygonum vacciniifolia sprawling over rocks & forming huge clumps of bright rich pink.

SUMMARY:
Notes daily bathing at a pond with dug-out canoes and an inspection of Kuth plantations, healthy in places but grub-damaged elsewhere. Records travel from Sharithang to Chumpithang, Gangtok, and Kalimpong, with Mec. superba common on the Ha La and Kin La and seed ripening noted. Stayed with Odling (where Morris was also staying), then continued via Calcutta to Srinagar; specimens collected total 660.

about 40 yards x 15 yards & 4 ft deep. On this he has 8 dug-out canoes which we found great fun. All of us bathed, including Chuni, & we bathed every day, wet or fine. I went up & saw all but one of the Kuth plantations. Kuth was looking quite healthy in some places, but rather eaten by grubs in others.

26th Aug. Sharithang. Tobgye came up to near the Ha La with us, & left us in a very heavy storm. Reached Sharithang at 6.45 pm. On the Ha La & Kin La, & particularly between the two, Mec. superba is very common. Seeds just brown: should be ripe about the end of September.

27th August. Chumpithang. Fine till about 12:00, then rain the rest of the day.

28th Aug. Gangtok. Walked the 32 miles in 11 hours exactly, & Tobgye's mule with my kit came in with me. Rained very hard all day.

29th Aug. Kalimpong. Motored in to Kalimpong & stayed with Odling, where Morris was also staying. Left Kalimpong on 31st, arrived Calcutta 2nd Sept, & went on the same night, reaching Srinagar on 5th Sept in time for lunch.

Specimens collected 660.

SUMMARY:
Notes list specimens 5887–5906 with habitat and identification comments on several Primula species and Meconopsis integrifolia. It records that Taylor obtained P. rotundifolia further east and includes additional taxa such as Cyananthus, Pedicularis, Geranium, Cotoneaster, and Saxifraga.

No. Taylor got rotundifolia further East.

5887 Primula Littledalei. This seems to have taken the place of 3892 (P. rotundifolia). It has much the same habitat, but does also grow out in the open on grassy ledges of the hillside. These taken from the lower altitude were in the mixed Abies rhododendron forest, which is quite unlike P. rotundifolia. They were growing just at the upper limit of P. Jaffreyana close to this. — at what I would suppose to be a very low altitude for a Rotundifolia primula.

  1. Primula hyacinthina. I don't know this form of P. bellidifolia. It has the thick farina on the back of the leaves like P. hyacinthina, but is a very small primula, much smaller than what I have seen of the latter. The usual height would be about 4"-5".

  2. Primula amabilis. I don't know this. The capsules look rather like a nivalid primula, but otherwise the plant does not. We were too late for any flowers.

5890 Primula rhodochroa. At first I thought of a dwarf kind of P. atrodentata, which it resembles in some ways. But flowers are nearly all single.

5891 Meconopsis integrifolia. Only seen growing in a very small area 50' x 50'. Flowers mostly over. There are many old scapes still standing in clumps, but the plant has old leaves at the base, just above the roots. The fresh flowers are a fine colour. Habitat is very similar to Mec. superba or Mec. Sherriffii.
