SUMMARY:
Notes prolific flowering and collections including a new primula (P. jaffreyana 2257), an iris (2251), Incarvillea lutea (2252), and Thalictrum chelidonii. Reports shortage of drying paper, and mail issues: the runner found no mail at Tsona but had a chit from the Dzongpen; outgoing mail was forwarded by the Dzongpen and more is to be sent via Chayul.

...see how much more prolific the flowers were on this side. The most interesting things were a new primula P. jaffreyana 2257. Common to quite low down. A beautiful iris 2251, which I think is near the K.W.'s Karta iris, a queer lily-like affair 2252 (Incarvillea lutea), I don't know what it is.

Thalictrum chelidonii was in flower about halfway here, beautiful as ever. There were also a number of shrubs in flower too. Altogether yesterday I collected 20 different species. Now I have no paper left to put the dried flowers in. No mail turned up, but the runner is there. He found no mail in Tsona. We thought he was doing us down, but he had a chit from the Dzongpen which shows he was alright. Our last outgoing mail was still lying there, but both were sent on by the Dzongpen.

30th June. Halt. Sanga Choling. Another perfect day. Packed up mail to send off tomorrow via Chayul. Packed up as many dried flowers as possible, but have no paper; with this confounded tamasha going on, I cannot get hold of anyone. I now only have about 80 sheets of drying paper to play about with, which is...

SUMMARY:
Marched 7 miles to Sefu in persistent rain; Pritiman fell into a stream, soaking the rucksack. Presents and letters arrived from Lama Gompa and Domkhar, and later from Penlop Wangdi, with letters from HH and Naku; HH has sent another load. Tenduk rejoined after a long detour via Yundrucholing and Trongsa due to a washed-out bridge over the Wochen Chu, bringing a good collection of iris seeds from Punzor in the Mangde Chu valley.

8th August. To Sefu. 7 miles. Rained all night: fine till 12.0 then rain all day. Tenduk never came back yesterday, and has not yet turned up. He must have found a bridge washed away, and has had to go back by Trongsa. I hope he has not been washed away too. More presents and letters arrived yesterday from Lama Gompa and Domkhar. I hope that is now all. Pritiman distinguished himself by falling into a stream today. He gets laughed at by everyone, but today he was by himself and no one would have known if he had only emptied the water out of my rucksack which he was carrying. The contents were not improved of course. Tenduk arrived at 7.0 pm, having walked from Trongsa today about 27 miles. On his way back from Punzor he found the bridge over the Wochen Chu washed away, so had to return to Yundrucholing and then round by Trongsa. (Iris decora? seeds - from Punzor, Mangde Chu valley) He has a very good collection of iris seed, which he found fully ripe and mostly thrown in the lower irises, but in good condition higher up, even unripe at their highest limit. I am very glad he is back again. He gives me the unwelcome information that still another load has been sent by HH for me. Three men came yesterday with presents from Penlop Wangdi and letters from HH and Naku. I thought all the present business was over. I'm glad

SUMMARY:
Notes abundant Abies delavayi and Corydalis, sightings of Cyanopica, and Ludlow’s separate route south where he found Fritillaria cirrhosa (1574) and Thermopsis barbata (1573). Plans to move on to Migyitun with fine weather and no mail; on 11th May the party traveled 7 miles from Kyimpu to Charme along the left bank, noting Charme at the junction of the Char and Kyimpu rivers with good camping, supplies, and crops, and recording Anemone rivularis (1581), Iris decora (1582), and radishes.

CONTENT:
Abies delavayi 1572 - up to 100 ft high. Covers the whole slopes of the valley here. 67

Corydalis was found, same as on the La La, and another yellow one 1571, but that was barely out. I saw any number of Cyanopica which flew, putting a shot at flying birds. It is easy enough to hit them, but not so easy to find two coming over together. Ludlow went a different way to the South, found a Fritillaria 1574 and a Thermopsis 1573. We are still too early for a place like this, and should get on now to Migyitun. Still no sign of our mail. Fine again.

11th May. Charme. 7 miles. B.P. 19.43 Temp. 66° Time 10.30 am. Ht. 10200'.

Very cold in the morning, fine all day. The path is good the whole way, down the left bank, except for a few hundred yards after a gorge is passed. Charme is at the junction of the Char and Kyimpu rivers. Good camping ground and some supplies. Beans and barley grown. Water excellent.

SUMMARY:
Travel and halts around Molo with heavy rain, abundant flowering noted, and a letter from Ludlow reporting good flower prospects and route constraints. Reports of the Singo Samba bridge being destroyed prompt local officials to plan repairs, and ponies are arranged by the Bharang Shiga Agent for the move to a camp on the Lilung Chu. Wireless news is heard during halts, with little collecting success on some days.

CONTENT:
To 24th June. Molo 7 miles. Fine in the morning, then heavy rain from 10.0 am on. Kucho had gone ahead yesterday to arrange transport at Pämse, so we did not have to wait this morning.

There is a great change here, and flowers abound. The hillside, south face, is covered with the big Androsace strigillosa var. canescens, and P. jaffreyana is out too, but only near Molo—it does not appear further up, until one gets a good long way above Pämse. Iris decora is common the whole way down from Pämse, and mixes with another here. A letter is here from Ludlow—from Tse 6th June. He seems to think that flowers will be extremely good down that way; already they have a fine lot of things, much better I fear than I have. I am very glad to get his news from there. The Tsela Dzongpen is alright but does not want them to go to Pemakö, only as far as the Doshong La. He also mentions how he thinks June is the month for rhododendrons and July and August for primulas. So we are not too late, but should walk into good stuff as soon as we leave Lilung. It all sounds very good, and most cheering to me, as I have been rather depressed about flowers this year. I cannot hear much about the Singo Samba bridge, but the locals here in Bharang Shiga say that the Langong people have destroyed it. The Pachakshiri gyinpon is here, and is determined the bridge shall be repaired, as he has to get back to Lalung.

25th and 26th June. Halt. Molo. Both days rainy, with some fine intervals, but no sun. I put up the wireless the evening I came here, and heard the news tolerably well. I also heard the 2nd Test match score, and to my surprise found I am a day out in my reckoning. Today should be the 27th and not the 26th. The mistake was probably made the day I left Molo, which should have been 25th May not 24th. It does not matter, and I will change the date on leaving here. We went down the R. bank today and got some quite good things, including Semiaquilegia ecalcarata. This afternoon I have tried to pack, but cannot get things to fit in anyhow.

27th June. Halt. Molo. Rain on and off all day. Found nothing of any interest.

To 29th June. Camp on Lilung Chu 9 miles. Heavy showers followed by bright intervals—mostly fair. The Bharang Shiga Agent produced his 12 ponies as promised yesterday evening, and three men from Molo with them, and we were all off at 8.0 and came along well, reaching here at 1.0 pm. The path is Picea spinulosa tree forest common in the side valley leading down to the Tsangpo river.

MOLO to LILUNG. From Molo, which is on the R bank of the River, cross at the village by a long cantilever bridge to the L bank, and ascend immediately opposite, the cliff. This is rounded and the path falls to the river side. Thence the path is good, through forest, with occasional open stretches of 100 yards or so to m 8, where a bridge crosses the Lilung Chu. The side valley streams are all small except two, crossed by bridges. Follow down the R bank to m 9, where camp can be made in a clearing. The Lilung valley runs in a rough direction of 40° from Molo here. Follow down the R. bank on a good path, mostly through pine forest, crossing one very large side valley stream by a bridge at m 11. The country gradually becomes dryer as one goes down. Finally Lilung is reached at m 17. Here the river is in two branches, and can be crossed to the village by two cantilever bridges. The valley from m 9 gradually turns N-wards, and enters the Tsangpo at a bearing of 330°.

SUMMARY:
Notes describe travel from Natrampa with rainy conditions, a greener but still dry valley, and common flowering plants including aquilegia at Trüu and abundant iris on the camping flat. A road section collapses during crossing, the river is muddy, and the following day’s march to Lung yields little of interest as the lilies are finished.

Didissandra kingiana 2313,

8th July. Natrampa. 8 miles. 10247'. Fine, clouds high up the hillsides, but not sunny in the valley. Rained during the night. Left at 5:45, in at 10:30. The valley is much greener than when we were here before, but obviously very dry still down here. Found a pretty aquilegia at Trüu, [Semiaquilegia ecalcarata 2316] St. John's wort very common there. From there on iris, [Iris decora] the pretty little star-shaped one 2251, is very common, and the flat on which we camp here, is covered thick with them. At one place - where the ladder used to be - the road had given way. We put a tree trunk across the gap, but the whole thing gave way with a man on it. He had a nasty moment, but managed to get over all right. The river is very full now, no longer the clear stream it was. It is a filthy muddy colour now. No birds of interest, except one 'badh zat' which I missed twice here. I have foolishly brought very few cigarettes with me, and have to ration carefully.

9th July. Lung. 9200'. 7 miles. Rained most of the night and half the day, but some sun too. Saw very little on the way here, and nothing of interest. The lilies are all over.

to Pimbo 500' from camp, and then came across 2 coolies asking
to be shot. He, without cartridges, bumped into a herd of
bharal with 2 good heads. Pretty chilly here, but not so
cold as I expected.

5th October Trün, 8 miles. 12,000'? Cloudy all day even down here,
a dampish mist on the pass. Got a good collection of seed
(coll. Sherriff 2723. seed) of the pink Meconopsis under 2723. Otherwise nothing much in
the seed line. I hope we can get some Cyananthus wardii
later on about 500' above Trün. Everyone quite happy here,
but nearly all men have gone off hunting, including the
Gyimpu of the Other Trün. But coolies and everything are promised
for the day after tomorrow. Obviously the monsoon has not
finished here, as clouds are very low. Lhopas have stopped coming
here, so it seems there must be snow on the Kashong La.
BP of Pass 182.0. Temp 46° Time 9:30 am. Ht 16,930'. Bearing
of Karutra from here is 86° Mag.

6th Halt. (Trön) Stayed in camp most of the day. There is still a good
(Iris decora 2251.) deal of the little dry zone iris seed here 2251, which I collected.
Pimbo returned in the early morning, and hoped to reach Kyimpu that
night, a long march. Cloud all day, some rain.
