SUMMARY:
The writer lists several plant specimens and reports poor botanical results around the Nyang Sang La–Tse La ridge, with Ludlow’s northern reconnaissance similarly unproductive. They decide to move toward a snow mountain west of Nyuri or to Lujuthang, having slaughtered a yak and now needing extra yaks to carry the meat, and note high surrounding peaks and relatively dry conditions.

In July and first half August, there should, one would be flowers all over the place. Flowers there are, but more of the Tibetan type than we want. The Nyang Sang La - Tse La range seems to form more of a barrier than we had expected. It was this ridge which we had expected would make the area so particularly good. Anyway we are wrong. I was out all yesterday, going over the ridge, and a little down the Lohpa side, but there was nothing of any interest at all. Ludlow went up to the North, with the same result. There are Tibetan potentillas, and even some grammopetala, a sure sign that we are in the wrong area. One morning we had a clear hour or two, and saw a snow mountain away to the West of Nyuri, and to there we have now decided to go. It is either there or to Lujuthang, and of the two that seems the more hopeful. We bought a yak up here for Rs 18/- and halaled it yesterday, thinking we should be here for a while. Now we need two extra yaks to carry its meat back with us!

This valley is rather a queer place. At its head are peaks of over 20,000', up to 23,000 odd. I saw some of them yesterday. But they seem not to get a great deal of rain. Yesterday evening we saw an extraordinary sight. The weather in the valley had

5th August. I went up myself to a spot close to the Meba & took the flower photographing app. with me, & there collected & photographed 12 species. Before leaving camp, took a further eight. Then home & spent till 6.0 pm developing - a good 12 hours work. Heavy rain in the evening. There are some Tibetans here, whose remarks about my flower photography are amusing. They told our men, that it had rained hard till we came here, but that I was like a lama, & with my box of tricks was putting off the rain. They also thought the reason we were collecting butterflies was to take home & make new dyes for our clothes. The present dirtiness of our clothes may have warranted this remark.

6th Aug. Fine from 6.0 am till 12.0 noon. Went up towards the Meba, & wandered about the hillside. I climbed up a rocky hill & found snow cock, but failed to shoot any. The day was completely spoilt for me by my discovering that Damong has been very lazy & has not been changing the drying paper. He has made an awful mess of all the fine flowers collected here. I haven't had time to check him, & he has taken advantage of that. It is a great disappointment to me. I thought he was a better man than that. I photographed a little Tibetan girl who is up here with some yakherds from Tibet. She is a pretty little thing,

with us, a few questions. He is a good sort, willing and able to give information about the country etc. etc. He hesitated to answer, and the others were heard to tell him not to tell us the names of camps and passes. Why, I cannot imagine. However he came back and whispered the names later, at the same time asking me not to say he had told me, when we returned to Mago. Leaving camp, there is a stiff climb of 500 ft up the nala bed. Then a more or less horizontal yak path is met and followed south. It is quite good and perfectly easy, gradually climbing to the DEBONG LA in 2 (Approx 14,500'). Thence down to BULUNG, a place used by yak herds on occasion. There is an empty hut here, and a small lake, quite a good camping site. (in 3 1/2). Beyond this the path again climbs fairly steeply to the CHIGUP LA, (same approx height). Descent easy over open grassland to a small plain called CHIGUP NAGA, where there
