SUMMARY:
In camp above Trün after a misty morning, the diarist notes finding Gentiana waltonii, a Ceratostigma (possibly the same as at Lhakhang in 1933), Codonopsis convolvulacea, Delphinium gyalanum, and Briggsia aurantiaca, and mentions sending old seeds to Edinburgh. Traveling by the high road from Drotang to Trün through forest, they encountered about 15 Lopas who inspected the diarist’s gun with interest.

22nd July. In camp above Trün. 6 miles. 10500'. Another lovely day,
but misty all up the valley in the early morning till about
8.0 am. I came across three things I have been looking
for today. First the gentian which was seen on the dry,
(but south) side of the river on our way down in May. It is
Gentiana waltonii 2416
now just coming into flower, and a fine sight 2416. I
sent a few of last year's old seeds to Edinburgh before, under

no number. Then I found a little Ceratostigma 2422,
just coming into bloom. I hope it is the same as the

one we got at Lhakhang in 1933, a new sp. And 2423
Delphinium gyalanum 2421.

the same creeper (vinca blue) which we got quite near
the Ceratostigma at Lhakhang, a beautiful flower,
but only just coming out. I took the high road
this time from Drotang to Trün, and it is very much
pleasanter than the riverside path, easier, more level,
and through forest for most of the way. We passed a
body of about 15 Lopas, both men and women, and had quite
good fun with them. I took some photos of them, and
then they inspected my gun with much interest, and

The party proceeds via Chagal, while the Dzongpen departs to Drokpa La with the Trim jigmpu and a coolie, leaving Tenduk, Ahmad Sheikh, and the diarist with 14 coolies. At Chagal Dzong they record weather and notable plants, and exchange calls with the Dzongpen who arranges matters for the next day.

the south side. 2422. Otherwise the only flower of interest was a Delphinium 2424, with white sepals & black petals. Crops are nearly ripe here, & already some are being cut & threshed. When we were here last, they were only about 2-3 inches up. Dzongpen has gone off to the Drokpa La today with the Trim jigmpu & a coolie, leaving Tenduk, Ahmad Sheikh & I with 14 coolies to go on via Chagal. Nothing of any interest here, no birds worth recording.

24th July. Chagal Dzong. 6 m. Fine all day, with clouds & sun. Rain last night. A dull march in, with nothing much to see. Plenty of Ceratostigma on the hillside, & a lot at camp on the N side of the river. The little Primula tibetica collected here on our way to Lung first time, is still in bloom, & has a scape about 2" long. Also a very bright yellow Pedicularis, all over the boggy meadow. Dzongpen very kind. I see him tomorrow. Tenduk visited him this afternoon.

25th July. Halt. Chagal. Fine most of the day, but no sun. Exchanged calls with the Dzongpen, who was very pleasant, & has made all arrangements for tomorrow. Nothing very

SUMMARY:
The diarist notes a slip into a river at camp without injury, records observations of Delphinium and gentians with altitude ranges, and recovers a previously lost fountain pen at Cyandro. A local couple visits, requests a photograph, and gives six eggs in return. The entry is set at Sanga Choling.

river at camp when starting off, but no damage done. A Delphinium gyalanum 7461

Prims line the hillside above the path below Kyimpu, but I did
not see one. They grow much higher this side, from 11500' to
14000' or even 14500', whereas in the Changu Chu, I don't think I
saw them above 12000' at most. At Cyandro I lost a
fountain pen in May. I asked if it had been seen since,
and it was produced - a little bent, having been peered at by
many people no doubt, but otherwise all right. The sister
of the pretty S. Choling girl, and her husband, called here this afternoon.
Their first request was for a photograph: it seems to run in
the family. I got quite a good coloured one, which I gave
them, and they returned the compliment with 6 eggs, which I
suppose are taken from the villagers, and are almost certainly
all bad.
