Part of The Ludlow & Sherriff Collection

SUMMARY:
Travel from Gyetsa to Bumthang in rainy, misty weather with few notable plants collected and leeches troublesome. The diarist meets HH, discussing his health, former drinking, and his visit to holy water near Kurjey monastery; news includes Kapshopa Shape being locked up (said to be in Netang/Nechung) and reported trouble between the DL and the Tibetan Government. Dansey passes through the area and Dorji Llowden is expected shortly.

was here. We got a few flowers again today, including a rather striking creeper 19664 which I don't ever remember having seen before. Leeches pretty bad. Dansey & Co passed through here rumoured to be in Bumthang today, I'm told.

31st August. Gyetsa. Heavy rain all night, but clearing up soon after we left. Mist much like the Yuto La, and then pretty clear and bright. Nothing of interest anywhere on the way. Here the country looks very pretty indeed, with the patches of bright pink here and there of the buckwheat crops.

1st September. Bumthang. Wet night, but just fine till we got here when there was quite a lot of sun. I sent a letter to HH to ask if I could come to see him today or tomorrow. He sent round to say he was coming today at 12.0 and he came. We had a pleasant talk, with the ever present difficulty of Urdu and Hindi. He seems in good form, but had again had a giddy fit on the way to Tongsa. I asked him today if he drank much, and he gave the answer "Not now. I used to when worried and depressed, but have given it up." He was quite frank about it, and I am sure truthful. HH was on his way to have a bathe in some very holy water just beyond Kurjey monastery which is supposed to be very good for one. Khampas take a lot of the water away with them when on pilgrimage from Kham. HH told me that Kapshopa Shape was very safely locked up. He said in Netang. I wonder if he means Nechung. He is said to be shut up in a small place where there is little more than room for himself. He also said there was some trouble between the DL and the Tib. Government. I should think that Kapshopa is at the bottom of it all. What surprises me is that they all seem surprised that Kapshopa should be locked up. A more patently crooked man it would be hard to find, always too nicely spoken. Dorji Llowden is coming the day after tomorrow. I'm glad to have tomorrow free as

SUMMARY:
The party halts at Dongkar amid showers, hosts the Tsona Dzongpon who enjoys cigarettes and Cointreau, and arranges to send him a Rhoorki chair from Calcutta. Notes mention Bhutanese traders from Trashiyangsi, glacier views near the Gorpa La with a route to Gor, and botanical finds including a notable gentian (Lomatogonium spathulatum) and other species.

number of Bhutanese here from Trashiyangsi today - trading.

Note. The glaciers on the hills to the north of the Gorpa La are extensive, and certainly show from Dongkar through an angle of 68° Mag to 98° Mag. There is a route down the valley from the Gorpa La to the village of Gor. A few peas are grown in Dongkar.

17th August. Halt at Dongkar. A good day with some showers, but lovely in between. We had some pretty heavy rain in the night, and a good deal came in through the tent, which is otherwise magnificent. The Tsona Dzongpon called and stayed an hour. He was given a tin of cigarettes on the quiet and was very pleased with them. Later on he asked for a drink of something warming! And he a lama. He was given a glass of Cointreau, and judging by the noise made, thoroughly enjoyed it. He sat in my Rhoorki chair and was so pleased with that too, that we are going to send one from the Army & Navy in Calcutta. Found a few flowers, but only one of interest, a fine gentian growing in very dry stony ground. (834). It must be near that found on the Thuka La by Dansey near Lingmathang, though the habitat is so entirely...

SUMMARY:
At Trimo, excursions towards the Po La yielded Primula obliqua and several rhododendrons; delays with kit led to a decision to wait until the 12th before moving on. Lumsden shot a serow at close range and later attempted to bag a barking deer, while otherwise little of interest was found.

Trimo, 10th April Halt. Trimo. A fine day at last. I went up towards
the Po La with Sherriff, but found nothing more than 1278
[P. atrodentata] Primula which is in profusion, till we turned back. Then
[Prin. strumosa 1300] found P. obliqua (1300) yellow form, coming up beside the snow.

Dansey found nothing also, but Ludlow found some
rhododendrons, some of which are very nice, especially a small
[Rho. tsariense 1303] orange-flowered one (1303). The sun shone the whole day till the
[R. wallichii 1302, 1306; R. argipeplum 1304; R. arboreum 1305, 1307, 1308; R. pendulum 1309] evening. Our kit has not yet all arrived, but the last of
it is promised by this evening. Two men went to Tsoma
today over a ridge. I was all for starting tomorrow
morning, but Ludlow wants to wait, so do the coolies,
so we have decided to wait till the 12th & hope for the
best in the way of weather. The monsoon can't be here
yet, & there should be a break soon. There are some serow
here which feed in the fields, & we got news of one yesterday. Lumsden
walked down to 40 yds of it & shot it with a .22 - just like that. We
tell him it won't always be as easy as that.

Trimo 11th April Halt. Another grand day. But we got nothing of interest
[Prim. wallichiana] from flowers or birds. Lumsden was told of a barking deer in
the crops this morning & tried to bag it too. But it went
